The average baby weighs about 7.5 pounds at birth, according to WhatToExpect.com. And that baby will grow quickly in the first four months.

According to Ask Dr. Sears, a breast-fed baby will gain 4-7 oz a week during the first month, and an average of 1-2 lbs per month for the first six months.

That article also referenced a 1992 study, titled the DARLING study, which showed that breastfed and formula-fed infants grow at basically the same rate in the first few months .

Using those numbers, which are an average starting weight of 7.5 lbs and an average weight gain of 1.5 lbs per month, we can estimate how long those newborn cloth diapers would last the average newborn.

How Many Diapers A Day

1. Newborn to 1 Month

Newborns under a month old need to have at least six or more wet diapers every day. They usually have about 3 to 4 bowel movements a day. Parents often change at least 10 soiled or wet diapers daily during the first month.

2. 1 Month and Up

Babies 1 month and older continue to have at least four and up to six wet diapers a day. The bowel movements after they turn 1 month old tend to decrease. They are still soft because your baby is only taking in formula or breast milk. Breastfed babies tend to have softer and more frequent stools and formula-fed babies have firmer and less frequent stools.

How Long Can A Baby Go Without Pooping

In some cases, longer than you might think. While many little ones poop every day, its possible and not necessarily something to panic about if a baby goes 24 hours without pooping and even up to a full week without a bowel movement.

Since exclusively breastfed babies sometimes use up every bit of breast milk towards energy production, its not unusual for them to sometimes go up to seven days without pooping.

But formula-fed babies, babies whove started solids, and toddlers tend to poop more often than that. For them, going more than two to four days or so could be a sign of constipation, provided theyre also straining to go and generally seem uncomfortable.

That said, every child is different, and some babies and toddlers simply go a little longer in between, well, going, than others. So pay attention to whats typical for your little one.
