For the initial few days after delivery, the total number of diapers they will wet generally increases every passing day. How many diapers per day for a newborn baby is necessary? By the time a baby is five days old, they may pass urine about six times per day and have about three or more stools per day. As the baby grows older, their need for diapers tends to decrease.

Is My Breastfed Baby Getting Enough Milk
Mothers who are breastfeeding can not see how much human milk their baby is getting and sometimes worry if they are getting enough.
These factors indicate a baby is likely getting enough milk:
- Gaining weight consistently. This is the most important indicator. It is normal for a newborn to lose weight immediately after birth, but should be gained back by 2 weeks of age.
- Frequent breastfeeding and is satisfied after each feeding
- Waking to feed
- Can be heard swallowing constantly while breastfeeding in a quiet room
- Plenty of wet and dirty diapers with pale yellow or nearly colorless urine. The urine should not be deep yellow or orange.
Breastfeeding mothers also have indicators that the baby is likely consuming enough:
- Tingly feeling during milk let-down. This sensation needs to happen at each feeding.
- Breasts feel less full after feeding
- Feel cramping in the lower abdomen which indicates uterine contractions in the first few weeks after delivery. Hormones produced and released during breastfeeding also helps the uterus to contract and return to it pre-baby form.

Diaper Output And Milk Intake In The Early Weeks
Are counting wet and dirty diapers a reliable indication of whether a breastfed baby is getting enough milk? During the first six weeks of life, parents are often encouraged to track daily diaper output , but is this an accurate gauge? Science has taken a close look and the results may surprise you.
During the first day or two of life, breastfed babies receiving colostrum typically have one to two wet diapers and stools per day. After that, some health organizations suggest breastfeeding parents track daily diaper output to estimate milk intake. According to the International Lactation Consultant Association1 signs of effective breastfeeding are at least three stools per day after Day 1 and at least six wet diapers per day by Day 4. The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine 2 considers indicators of adequate mothers milk intake to be the transition from the first dark stools passed by the baby to yellow stools by Day 5 and three to four stools per day by the fourth day of life.
So at best, diaper output can be considered a rough indicator of milk intake. While it can be helpful to track diaper output on a daily basis between regular checkups, diaper output alone cannot substitute for an accurate weight check. Other indicators of good milk intake, such as alertness, responsiveness, and growth in length and head circumference.
