Mom Bathes Baby Once A Week Unleashing Online Firestorm

How do I bathe my baby before the umbilical stump falls off?

Bath time for babies is a cherished ritual for many parents, but one mother has set off a firestorm of debate with her confession that she bathes her 3-month-old son only once a week.

At least, thats her goal, but Claire Goss said she doesnt always achieve it.

I aim for once a week. It might not happen. I will confess, it has gone longer than a week, Goss, 32, told ABC News Paula Faris.

When asked how long shed gone between baths for her baby, Charlie, she said, It can be a good 10 days, but if you met my baby and held him, youd probably think he smells as amazing as I do.

The Ashland, Mass., mother of three says her bedtime routine for her son includes changing his diaper, washing his face and washing his hands.

Goss, a part-time blogger and stay-at-home mom, says nightly baths were once a routine for her, but five years later, she simply doesnt have the time.

My first baby got her daily baths sometimes, two bathes a day, she said.

Now, with a full schedule that includes having to be home to meet the bus, getting her other son, Peter, to pre-school, going grocery shopping and getting dinner ready she says she realized she couldnt do it all.

What I realized now after five years of parenting children is, hes not a dirty kid, hes a baby, she said.

Goss wrote about her baby-bathing mindset on Babble, a parenting website.

When Should A Newborn Have Their First Bath

Many hospitals used to bathe newborn babies right away, often within an hour or two of birth. In the past few years, the recommendations of when a newborn baby should have their first bath have changed. The World Health Organization says that its best to wait at least 24 hours after babies are born to give them their first bath.

There are a few reasons that professionals suggest waiting 24 hours before your babys first bath:

Keeping the baby warm and blood sugar levels stable. Newborns who are bathed right away can get cold, which can lead to hypothermia or cause stress that triggers a babys blood sugar to drop.

Preventing dry skin. Babies are born with a special waxy coating on their skin called vernix. It acts as a natural barrier to the air and protects the moisture in your babys skin.

Breastfeeding and bonding with parent. Research has shown that skin-to-skin contact and very early breastfeeding can help the mother/baby bond and make breastfeeding more successful overall.

Create Your Own Routine

As your child gets older, their bathing cadence can continue to be around three times a week. The older they get, the more they tend to run around and get dirty or sweaty, so bathing frequency should vary based on their activity level.

Some families prefer to create a bedtime routine for their baby as soon as possible, and this typically includes a bath, followed by a feeding. For other families, bath time is a bonding experience or a fun way for their child to play. If daily baths work best for your child and lifestyle, be sure to sufficiently and consistently moisturize their skin.

One thing we always emphasize with new parents: Whether your child is 6 months or 16 years old, do what works best for you. What matters is that theyre safe and clean. Other than that, no two families bathing habits need to be the same.

What About My Older Child

Toddlers and preschoolers live life like its their job to get dirty. Surely you need to bathe them every day, right? Maybe not, according to Connecticut-based pediatric dermatologist Dr. Brittany Craiglow.

Bathing should increase in frequency as children age, but this doesnt mean that a daily bath is always necessary, she said. It is perfectly fine to spot clean when kids get messy with paint or markers, for instance. Break out the wipes or the wet wash-cloth to clean obvious messes and diaper areas, but save the soap for days when toddlers or preschoolers do what they do best: If they truly get dirty such as from playing in the mud then a bath is a better option.

There are other exceptions to the no-soap rule. Kids also should have a bath after being outdoors wearing sunscreen and/or bug spray, swimming or sweating, Dr. Craiglow said. Soap should be used in these scenarios, but for routine bathing stick to using it only on feet and diaper areas, particularly if kids are prone to dry skin.

Common Questions About Bathing A Newborn Baby

How often should I bathe my baby? Babies dont need a bath every day. In fact, too many baths can dry out your babys sensitive skin. Experts recommend bathing a newborn two or three times per week.

What kind of soap should I use for my newborn babys bath? Pediatricians recommend using bath products and skin care products that are made especially for babies, since their skin is very delicate. Most baby products are designed to be gentle and not irritate a newborns skin. They dont contain the same intense fragrances that adult soaps and shampoos do.

What if my baby doesnt like the bath? While some babies love the sensation of being in the bath, some dont like it much. If your baby gets upset or cries during a bath, dont worry thats normal, too. A few things you can try to help calm them down include gently massaging their arms and legs, singing a song or speaking softly while bathing them, or giving them a bath toy. Usually, once they get used to bathtime, theyll start to enjoy it.

If you have any questions or concerns, its always good to reach out to your babys doctor. They can offer guidance on umbilical stump care, any rashes or bumps that you notice, or any other questions that arise when youre learning to give your newborn baby a bath.

Bath time might be part of your nightly ritual, but doctors actually don’t recommend daily baths for babies. Excess exposure to water can zap their skin of moisture and worsen conditions like eczema. Then again, not bathing your baby often enough can also aggravate eczema, plus lead to other infections.

“It’s a delicate balance,” says Scott Grant, M.D., MPH, FAAP, at Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan. But bathing itself is probably not the entire problem: “The use of bath products, including lotions that contain dyes or fragrances, can react with babies’ skin to make eczema worse even if there isn’t a ‘bath,'” says Dr. Grant.

Best Time Of Day For A Bath

What time of day you bathe your baby is really up to you. Many families adopt the “bath before bed” routine, as baths can help your child relax before bedtime, signaling that sleep is coming soon.

Evening is also when many parents and caregivers have more time to devote to bathing their baby. However, if you prefer to bathe your baby in the morning or during the day, thats perfectly acceptable.

When considering what time of day to bathe your baby, also think about when you will be the most alert. Bathing babies, and especially newborns, takes good hand-eye coordination, patience, and vigilance on the part of the caregiver.

If you think you will be distracted by other responsibilities or your other children, it’s best to choose another time to bathe your baby.

Step 1: Fill the tub with a few inches of warm water. Aim for about 2 to 3 inches of water, to keep baby safe. Making sure to support babys head at all times, gently lower your little one into the water. The bath temperature for a newborn should be between 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, never hotter than 120 degrees. While most parents are worried about making the bath too hot, be sure you dont err in the other direction, since babies get cold easily. Kelly B., whose baby is now 3, learned a thing or two when she nannied for a woman who had infant twins. She taught me that the water should be warmer than youd expect, she recalls. Dipping your wrist in is a good way to gauge the temperature, but if youre nervous about getting it right, you can use a thermometer.

How Often Should You Bathe Your Newborn

Until a baby starts getting down and dirty on the ground, a daily bath isn’t needed . Your baby only needs a bath two or three times a week and in fact too much bathing can dry out your infants delicate skin. Newborns should only have sponge baths until their umbilical cords dry up and fall off.

If your baby’s umbilical cord stump is still intact or if a circumcised newborn’s penis hasn’t healed, avoid tub baths altogether and just use your hands or a baby washcloth for cleanups. When your baby is ready to give it a go, find a flat surface bathroom or kitchen counter, bed, even the floor and keep washing up with the sponge gently and briefly until she gets used to it.

When youre ready to graduate from a sponge bath, move the fun to a baby bathtub and eventually the big tub when your baby can sit up on her own and outgrows the infant tub. There’s nothing cuter than seeing a baby splashing in the bath, soapy suds dotting those chubby folds and dimples but always keep safety in mind. Never leave your baby alone in the bath water even for a second.
