After wraps, little hats, bonnets and headbands are another adorable way newborn photographers can accessorize. Our studio has many custom made! While there are many vendors selling newborn accessories and props on-line , most of them are very mediocre in both quality, materials and style. We always ask our clients to NOT buy any newborn accessories for their newborn photography photoshoot with us. Most of these vendors actually do not know proper size measurements for a tiny newborn. Often these props, once received, look absolutely ridiculous and huge on a newborn, for example.
Newborn photographers should have established relationships with quality newborn accessory vendors. Someone who knows how to size for a true newborn , who matches their style and used quality materials. The vendors we work with have very exclusive and limited shop openings. Best Backdrops For Newborn Photography
When it comes to newborn photography backdrops there are hundreds of options.
The four main categories that are most commonly used today:

1. Wood Backdrops
Much like the trend in interior design, reclaimed barnwood is by far the most popular look right now in wood backdrops. Some newborn photographers will use real wood and build themselves a DIY wood backdrop. Others will buy a backdrop with a wood pattern actually printed on it- and they look incredibly real! This type of backdrop is made of a rubber backed mat or a large piece of canvas, coated poly paper or stretchy fabric and a wood print is applied directly to the material. Further, wood backdrops will vary in terms of color, type of wood, board width and how rustic they look. Most newborn photographers will have a collection of wood backdrops that cover both white, medium and dark wood looks. Above all, we prefer Rozzi Rayne and Intution Background for our wood backdrops.

Posing fabric comes in every shade of the rainbow and more recently printed options have become available, too. Moreover, the material is always a stretchy fabric so it can easily be draped over a posing area and clamped up to a backdrop stand for a very smooth and even look. Two yards is the most common size for the posing fabric used in newborn photography.

- Its not all about the props
- Lets get that out of the way first and foremost. When you are first starting out, save your money, it is more important to invest in yourself.
Elaborate props and accessories cannot create a beautiful image if you do not have the ability to create a proper exposure, lighting, and composition. Which brings us to the next point.
- Know your camera, and what it can do for you
- Getting off of automatic, and learning the ropes of manual exposure will rock your photographic world.
You do not need a crazy expensive camera to start out.
Settle for an entry-level DSLR, and opt for a few lenses instead. This will give you more versatility to accomplish an array of compositions.
Depending on what type of learner you are, either invest in some online modules, or for your basics. Next you can work on specializing in your chosen area.

Arrange A Studio At Home
For this purpose, bring a camera or a phone, solid-color backdrop, some item for a backdrop to stand steadily , necessary accessories, such as cushions or pillow, blankets, stuffed toys, baskets, a pregnancy pillow or a boppy to locate a newborn, a pacifier, etc. You may also turn on some calm music.
I purchased a flexible backdrop kit with white curtains. Such kits are typically quite affordable and their price ranges from $40 to $10, which depends on the quality. You may encounter a support system for approximately $39 or even a whole kit. Dont forget to bring some cushions or pillows as the newborn wont feel comfortable sleeping on a bare surface without any covering. I picked a cushion for a sofa along with a nursing Boppy pillow. After that, I put a white blanket on top of two pillows.

Any Special Items Or Outfits You Want To Include
While we offer everything you need to make your babys photo session a success, you may still have a few special items that you want to include in your newborn photos: a special hat or blanket, furs to wrap up your babys fingers and toes, or even babys coming-home outfit. Some new parents want photos of their babies using Mom or Dads military uniform, or they want to include heirloom outfits that were used in their own baby pictures.
Were glad to include any items that you would like to see used in your babys photos. However, you must discuss those items with us ahead of your session. While including an outfit change in your newborns photo session is easy enough, its much harder to incorporate some heirlooms or props safely.
Many of the stunning newborn shots you see in professional photography studios include a lot of composite images. For example, our clients are often surprised to discover that, for our hanging basket photos, we dont actually place the baby in a hanging basket! Instead, the baby is kept safe and protected throughout the entire shoot, often held by one of our team members or posed carefully to create the ideal effect.
One of our most requested photographs is the baby in the dream catcher floating over the water. The truth is that most of the stunning images come together during the post-production editing.
What Should The Parents And/or Siblings Wear
Another important question from parents as they are preparing for a newborn session is what should they wear. The simplest and the best advice a photographer can give is wear what makes you feel comfortable. There are couple of tips and tricks though.
Parents or siblings should wear solid colors and avoid patterns so they do not catch the attention from the main subject the baby. Those may be gray and cream clothes, but any other color that you prefer might work as well. One of the most common suggestions is to pick one or two colors and then coordinate different tones of the colors together. For example, you can mix light and dark gray or blue together. Blankets and pillows can be draped on couches for added texture and color.
If you are going for traditional portraits against a solid background, you will want something simple, without complicated patterns and logos, so nothing distracts you from your subjects. Soft, neutral fabrics are usually most comfortable and do not distract from what the baby is wearing.
