How To Keep Your Newborn Awake During The Day

Myth: Babies Should Sleep In A Quiet Room

7 Sleep Tips for Newborns: Help Your Newborn Sleep

FACT: Babies, especially very young babies, actually sleep better when its noisy. In the womb it can be louder than a vacuum cleaner and this is all your baby has known!

Using white noise in their room for all their day sleeps and overnight will definitely help your baby settle better and sleep for longer. It also helps block out any other household or environmental sounds that might wake a sleeping baby.

The white noise should ideally be played louder than a babys cries or as loud as a shower while you are settling them to sleep. If you have a decibel reader we’d recommend the white noise be played around 65 dB.

White noise is also extremely effective for adults who suffer from insomnia too! We have an excellent collection of white noise tracks available HERE.

Stagger Which Wake Times To Keep Baby Awake

RULE 4: As you add more waketimes to the day, try to stagger them.

For example, dont start with the first two waketimes of the day.

Do a waketime you try to keep her awake for, then just let her sleep for the next one. Then a waketime you keep her awake, let her sleep, etc.

You can stagger them more than that if you want to .

She will be more successful at staying awake for a wake time if she is better rested.

WEEK FOUR:Your baby is between 3-4 weeks old.

As in other weeks, add one waketime to your day, so you are now up to three.

At this point, some babies might be able to add two instead of just one. Many start to be more awake at this age, but some are still very sleepy.

This was the age my son started to reject the idea of sleeping in the day .

The third waketime I added for my daughter was after the 10:30 AM feeding. We occasionally ran errands and/or had visitors after this feeding, so it was a convenient time to have her awake for a bit.

Stimulation During Day No Stimulation At Night

This is a big one.

Daytime is for play.

Nighttime is for sleep.

Dont treat days like nights, afraid to wake the baby up. If its naptime, protect the nap. If you are feeding or playing with the baby then its okay for some stimulation.

However, at night, keep lights out, voices low, and all forms of Wakey Baby off.

This can be hard since babies are so gooey and sweet, but its what makes the difference in the long run.

Avoid Caffeine If Nursing

Caffeine does cross the breast milk and while its widely considered safe to drink a small amount each day while nursing it is a stimulant and can have such an effect on your new baby. Babies have different tolerances to caffeine so if you feel like youve been doing everything right and youre still having wakeful spells in the night, take stock of your caffeine and chocolate intake. Also consider your pumped milk if you are giving breast milk bottles. If you pump in the morning after a cup of coffee or in the afternoon after a nice chocolate treat, label that milk as day milk so your baby doesnt get that boost of caffeine in the middle of the night!

Help Your Newborn Fall Asleep

Dont make the mistake I did and assume that your baby will just fall asleep whenever shes tired. Many babies need our help to fall asleep, and will end up overtired without it.

To start, set up the right environment, from keeping the room dark to turning on white noise. Use the swing, baby wrap, swaddle, and pacifier to help her doze off. Rock her to a sleepy state before putting her down. If she wakes up crying, comfort her and put her back down drowsy.

At this age, its a balance of giving her an opportunity to fall asleep on her own, with helping her when shes struggling to do so. Down the line, you can consider sleep training, but for now, she likely still needs your help falling asleep.

Heres how to get an overtired newborn to sleep.

When To Wake A Baby For Feeding

Newborns often cluster-feed, which means that they may eat several times over the course of 12 hours or nurse for an extended period. Most newborns should eat every 23 hours or more if a pediatrician recommends so or if the baby is not gaining enough weight.

Feeding a newborn whenever they show hunger cues such as rooting, sucking, or sticking out their tongue is the best way to ensure that they get enough food.

It is not necessary to wake most older newborns up to eat. However, those younger than 1 month old or so may not wake up when they feel hungry. Babies younger than 4 weeks old should not go longer than 45 hours without food.

To wake a baby up to eat, try brushing the side of their cheek. This can trigger the rooting reflex. Most babies dislike having their feet stroked. So, if stroking the cheek does not work, try gently wiggling the babys toes or gently stroking the bottoms of their feet.

Food needs vary from baby to baby. Parents and caregivers should consult a pediatrician or nursing expert, who can offer individual advice based on the needs and development of the baby.

How Can I Tell If A Newborn Is Sleeping Too Much

A baby occasionally sleeping for longer than usual is not a cause for concern unless there are other symptoms.

In general, it is uncommon for a newborn to consistently sleep through feedings or to sleep for longer than 19 hours per day unless they are ill or are having feeding difficulties.

Some of the most common reasons that healthy babies sleep for longer than usual include the following:

    • They may experience a growth spurt or developmental leap.
    • They may have a minor illness, such as a cold.
    • They may have a serious infection. This is rare, but it can happen. A newborn might not have a fever or other symptoms of illness like an older baby might.
    • In very rare instances, a baby may have another medical condition that causes them to sleep too much. Breathing and heart disorders may affect sleep, and premature babies often have different sleep patterns from full-term infants.
    • Some babies sleep too much because they have jaundice. A newborn who has jaundice will have a yellow color to their skin and a yellow cast to the whites of their eyes. Other symptoms of more severe jaundice include being lethargic, having difficulty eating, and being fussy or irritable.
    • Sometimes, babies may sleep too much because they are not getting enough to eat. They may get dehydrated, lose too much weight, and even experience a failure to thrive.

However, in the early stages especially for first-time parents the signs of a potential problem may be easy to miss.

Should I Wake My Newborn After Three Hours

Many sleep consultants and lactation consultants agree to wake a sleepy baby for feeds.

I recommend feeding your baby between every 2.5 to 3 hours during the day. When babies get a full feeding, they typically fall into a 2.5 to 3-hour feeding routine.

You may have heard the advice to never wake a sleeping baby, but as a pediatric sleep consultant, I throw that advice out the window.

If its been more than three hours in between feeds, I would give your baby another 30 minutes maximum to wake on their own, and then Id wake her up to make sure she gets a feeding in.

Going too long without a feeding during the day can cause your baby to make up for all those calories at night.

Babies also have their days and nights mixed up until they are about 6 to 8 weeks old, so its important to wake your baby up for feeds throughout the day and create a conducive sleep environment, You can do this by including these baby nursery must haves for sleep!

Your newborns wake window is almost non-existent in the beginning. I promise theyll start stretching those wake windows and be awake more and more as they grow and develop!

Each month theyll grow and have a longer wake window. A 4 month old wake window can be up to two hours and a 5-month old wake window can be up to 2.5 hours, so youll have more play time with your little one soon!

Gently Preventing Your Baby From Nodding Off While Feeding Will Help To Foster Better Feeding And Sleeping Habits

Many babies have a cute tendency to nod off when they are feeding. Warm and cosy on the breast or cuddling in with a bottle, they drop off mid-feed and dont want to be woken for another hour. While super-cute, this isnt ideal. Keeping your baby awake at feeding time is important to avoid a feed-to-sleep association. That is, your baby gets into the habit of needing a feed in order to fall asleep. So how do you keep her from nodding off while feeding?

    Change Your Babys Diaper Strategically

Changing the diaper before a middle of the night feeding prevents the baby from waking up too much after a feeding is finished. When the baby wakes up change the diaper and re-swaddle to prepare him for sleep immediately following a night feeding. If you change the diaper after the night feeding, the baby may become too awake, making it more challenging for him to fall asleep.

Now, Ive also heard from parents of very young newborn babies sharing that the baby poops right after a night feeding. This is very common during the early newborn phase when babies are still working out the flow of their digestive tracts.

If your baby is consistently stooling after a night feeding, then certainly, just wait to change the diaper until after the feed. Once your babys gut matures and he or she stops stooling immediately after a night feed, you can go back to changing the diaper before the feed.

Newborn Sleep Patterns: Are There Any

To the sleepless parent, newborn sleep might seem totally disorganized. For example, consider these points.

    1. Newborns never sleep for long.

Newborns sleep in short bouts typically ranging from 30 minutes to 4 hours at seemingly random times throughout the day and night.

    2. Newborns awaken easily.

In part, this is because they spend a large portion of their sleep time in active sleep, a light sleep state characterized by fluttering eyelids rapid, irregular breathing occasional body movements and vocalizations .

    3. Newborn sleep times can vary widely.

In the first few days, the average newborn sleeps between 16-18 hours a day . By four weeks, newborn sleep averages about 14 hours. But the range is considerable. Some four-week-old babies sleep as little as 9 out of 24 hours. Others sleep for 19 hours a day .

Is Swaddling Good For Babies At Night

Swaddle helps babies to sleep better and more peacefully at night. However, you must consider a few things when swaddling your baby at night. Swaddling should be snug but not too tight, and the babys hands and legs should be able to move freely. Its also important that the baby isnt swaddled too tightly around the waist, which could cause breathing problems.

Baby Sleep Myth : Putting Babies To Sleep On Their Back Has Solved Sids

While the Back to Sleep campaign quickly reduced sleep deaths from 5,500 in 1994 to 3,500 in 1999, for the past two decades, SIDS progress has completely stalled. The tragic truth is that about 3,500 infants die during their sleep every year. Despite the fact that more babies are sleeping on their backs, the rate of accidental suffocation and strangulation deaths among infants has quadrupled since the mid-1990s. Whats to blame for this alarming trend?

Unsafe sleeping practices. Seventy percent of all sudden unexplained infant death victims are found in adult beds, sofas and other risky locations. One study found that even though most parents plan to follow the ABCs of safe sleep , less than half actually do it. By the end of the night, about 60% of babies have migrated from their bassinet to their parentsâ bed, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Lactation.

Myth: Babies Are Scared Of The Dark

FACT: Babies are not scared of the dark. They have nothing to base that fear on, since their imagination doesn’t develop until around 2 years of age. In the womb it is dark and so, like other mammals, babies actually find the dark comforting, safe and calming.

If you have a young baby who is overstimulated or overtired, putting them in a pitch black room will be very calming for them. Babies do not need night-lights, as any light will be stimulating for them and can prevent them from falling asleep or staying asleep.
