Newborn Checklist: The Essentials
Considering babies go through 1-2 outfit changes a day, it is a good idea to have 4-6 zip front onesies and bodysuits on hand. It is a good idea to have a mix of merino and organic cotton bodysuits, as well as short-sleeved and long-sleeved. Merino bodysuits are particularly great as they can be used on their own and are perfect for layering under a onesie when it is cold.
Onesies are also a great, versatile option for sleeping and playtime- you will find yourself reaching for these a lot.
Hats are great for keeping your young one warm. Having 2 hats will allow you to have one in use and one in the wash. We recommend merino hats as they are wonderful at keeping your baby warm when it is cold and cool when it is hot. Babies exposed to colder climates may need additional hats in rotation.
Mittens are great for saving your baby from themselves. Newborn nails are sharp and the last thing your baby needs is a scratch to the eye. Although they may be easily lost, having many pairs is not necessary as many baby clothes have built in mittens. Your baby will also be swaddled a lot of their newborn months.
For the same reason, many pairs of booties are not necessary as most newborn clothing are footed and have built in booties. Booties are a great alternative to socks as they are fastened at the ankle, preventing baby from kicking them off as easy.
What If My Babys Going To Be Born In Summer
Summer months can be very hot, especially for newborns. Remember that newborns dont regulate their body temperatures well.
Keep in mind that newborns often have cold feet. This is no cause for alarm. In fact, contrary to popular belief, theres no need to cover your babys feet in the summer. Avoid over-dressing your newborn. Newborn babies do not sweat, so its important not to overheat.
Its also a good idea to have some cotton hats and light blankets on hand for when you enter air conditioned buildings.
If youre looking for clothing for your summer baby, here are a few items you cant forget:
- Light sheets for the crib
- Jersey knit or muslin receiving blankets
Mango: Stylish And Cozy Coats
If youre hoping for something a bit more stylish and a little less outdoors-y, Mango is the move for baby outerwear. They have great options for baby boys and girls and in colors and styles that look far more high-end than their actual price tag. These are also a good option for those in warmer climates who may not need that down-filled bunting.

List Of Must Have Baby Clothes
Here is a suggested list of clothing and number of items that you may need from birth. Ideally organise a mixture of 0000 and 000 as you cant be sure how big baby will be at birth!
- 10 singlets or singlet suits
- Approx 4 each of long sleeve and short sleeve bodysuits
- 4 pairs of pants
- 1-2 pair mittens
- Lots of socks they always get lost!
- 2-3 sleeping outfits you can just use all in ones / wondersuits for sleeping or sleeping bags.
What Should I Buy If Im Expecting In Winter
Even if your baby is born in the winter months, you should still be careful not to bundle her up too much. But yes, you want to keep her warm. Keep in mind that abrupt temperature changes are not good for newborns.
You should also remember that you will often need to be prepared for spending time outdoors as well as indoors in the same outing. Make sure to buy something warm that you can easily put on and take off of your baby. That way, no matter where you are, you can maintain your little ones body temperature.
Its also important to keep your baby warm during diaper changes. In order to make diaper changing time faster, choose pants that have snaps in the legs or elastic waist bands.
Avoid one-piece suits that require removal during diaper changes. The last thing you want to do is completely undress your baby each time you have to change her diaper, especially when its cold.
If youre going to be outdoors and the temperature is low, make sure to put a hat on your baby.
If its a windy day, you should put a rain cover over your babys stroller while youre out.
When you go out shopping for your winter baby, write the following items on your list:
- long-sleeve cotton onesies

Carters: Multipacks In Cozy Cotton For Less Than $15
The Carters name is practically synonymous with baby clothes, particularly when it comes to affordable basics for everyday wear . Many parents dress their kids in head-to-toe Carters baby clothing when theyre very young and the changes and blowouts are frequent, saving pricier options for special occasions. But Carters bodysuits, pants, onesies and sleepers arent just cheap, theyre also made with an eye toward what the exhausted parents of newborns really need: easy-on clothing with snaps and zippers, cozy, stretchy fabric that sits nicely against your babes skin but also doesnt hold onto every stain… and maybe will even retain its structure and charm for baby No. 2.
Newborn Baby Clothes Checklist
This newborn baby clothes checklist is completely minimalist! This is the absolute bare minimum baby clothes for a new newborn that will keep you going until your baby is three months old.
When it comes to the style of babygro that you get, the onesies that fasten up with poppers tend to be cheaper than ones that do up with a zip. But the ones that do up with a zip are much easier to deal with in the middle of the night.
Consider buying one or two onesies that do up with a zip and have the rest with poppers.
This checklist features a pramsuit in size 0-3 months only. This is because it doesnt matter so much that it will be too big in the early weeks as your baby will only wear it for travel, not for rolling round on the floor.
The numbers here are assuming you will do more than one load of washing per week.
If you prefer to stick to just a one or two loads of washing a week, and you do not have a tumble dryer to speed up drying the clothes, buy a couple of additional vests and babygros to the newborn list so that you have at least one for every day plus a couple of extras on the 0-3 months checklist.
Ive stuck to all-in-one outfits to keep it simple here. This means you dont need to buy socks for the first few months. Trust me, they tend to just be pulled off of babys feet anyway!
- Pramsuit. If your baby has reflux after being born where they are being sick frequently, you may want to buy a spare pramsuit just in case.
How Do You Dress A Newborn To Stay Warm
Newborn babies need to be kept warm. So in cold weather it can be easiest to dress your baby in layers. Then you can take layers off when youre at the shops or in other warm places.
As a guide, dress your baby in the same number of layers youre wearing, plus one extra layer for warmth.
Although its important to keep newborns warm, its just as important that your baby doesnt overheat, especially during sleep.
A safe infant sleeping bag can be a good option for dressing your baby for bed. If you need to use an extra blanket, make sure your babys head or face cant get covered while theyre sleeping. Do this by putting your baby low down in the cot, so their feet are at the bottom end. Tuck in the blanket securely so it only goes as far up as babys chest.
European Baby Clothes Sizes
Picture this: You get an adorable baby outfit gifted to you, and you check the tag to see what size it is, but it simply says 70. Just when you think you understood baby clothing sizes, youre hit with the European sizing system.
European baby clothing sizes are labeled based on maximum centimeters in height meaning a size 70 should fit a baby up to 70 centimeters, or around 27.5 inches long . As with U.S. sizes, when shopping European baby clothing, its important to review the exact brands size chart.

Health And Safety Checklist
Itâs helpful to have a good supply of newborn health essentials, as at some point youâll need to take your babyâs temperature or put a bandage on a small scratch. These are some basic items to have at home:
â¡ First-aid kit. Stock this with basic items like a baby thermometer, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, adhesive bandages, and petroleum jelly, all in one place. You may wish to have another first-aid kit in the car or the diaper bag so you have some of these essentials when youâre on the go as well.
â¡ Bulb syringe. You can gently remove mucus from your babyâs nose with one of these handy syringes.
â¡ Nail clippers or a soft emery board. Your little oneâs nails will need trimming from time to time, which will also help prevent accidental scratching.
â¡ Soft-bristled hairbrush. Even if your little one doesnât have much hair, a brush can help loosen scales if your newborn ends up with cradle cap.
â¡ Sunscreen. Generally speaking, you should keep your little one out of direct sunlight for at least the first six months. However, you may apply a little sunscreen to any exposed areas, like the face and hands, if adequate clothing and/or shade isn’t available.
â¡ Babyproofing supplies. Although your newborn wonât be independently moving around for a while, babyproofing tools and supplies are an eventual must-have on your newborn checklist. It may even help to tackle some babyproofing chores ahead of time.

How Many Baby Clothes Do I Need In Each Size
Babies need a lot of stuff with clothing at the top of the list. To avoid overwhelming yourself , shop for baby in baby steps. Start by putting together a layette, or a set of clothing essentials, for the newborn days, which often consists of:
3 to 6 one-piece rompers
2 to 4 two-piece outfits
1 to 3 seasonal dress-up outfits
4 to 8 pairs of socks or booties
1 to 2 sweaters
1 snowsuit or bunting
1 to 2 swimsuits
While that’s a good place to start, you can choose to buy more or less depending on your situation babies tend to need more layers in colder weather, for example, and how often you plan to do laundry should also factor into the equation.
How Many Onesies Do I Need For A Newborn
Onesies are the comfiest outfits. They are quick to put on and easy to change. Despite the season, at least three onesies can be bought in a newborn size. Then, it is better to opt for 0-3 size. Remember that onesies with built-in footies should have sufficient length so that not to prevent your baby from movements. Still wondering how many onesies do I need, buy three pieces. These are the most comfortable outfits for active pastimes, sleeping, and strolls for newborns.

Season And Climate Help Determine Clothes A New Baby Needs
Depending on the time of year and the climate in which you live will help determine what clothes your new baby needs. For instance, both of my babies were born in the summer so they lived in onesies and single body pieces for the first several months. If you live in a cool climate or your baby is born in winter you may need some warmer clothing.
How Many Clothes Does A Baby Need In The First Year
I feel like Im starting to sound a bit like a broken record here. Baby clothes are fine. Baby clothes are great. But for the most part, a lot of the current baby clothes for sale arent practical or necessary.
As your baby begins to get older , its a good time to start introducing other clothing items into their daily life.
A light jacket, shoes , more socks, some cute little jeans and more shirts and pants. Still stick with the onesies as they arent out of that diaper phase yet, and wont be for quite some time.
Again, I think part of the biggest problem that we all face when trying to get clothes for our baby is that we tend to buy based on emotions and impulse.
Those two things combined can be quite costly. Keep it simple and just go with the basics. Your bank account and storage space in your house will thank you.

Getting Ready For Your Newborn: What Baby Clothes To Buy
28 December, 2017
If your due date is quickly approaching, then its time to start thinking about buying baby clothes for the little one on the way. A lot of mothers-to-be go a bit overboard and buy a lot of things that end up getting little or no use. To keep that from happening to you, read the following tips from You Are Mom. You dont want to miss this!
The first thing you need to remember is that babies grow very fast. In fact, they double their birth weight within 5 months, and they triple it by their first birthday.
With this information in mind, try not to buy more than you need. Try to keep things in balance. Otherwise, youll only end up using each article once .
Also, dont forget that friends and family are likely to give you a lot of new baby clothes right before or after the baby is born. Most of the clothing gifts your baby receives will probably be newborn size.
To keep from buying items you wont need, consider your babys measurements and approximate birth weight. Your OB/GYN can give you an estimate. Shop accordingly.

Newborn Photography Session Clothing
A quick note about newborn photography clothing
You might think that you have to buy a special outfit for your newborn photography session.
In my experience and in speaking with other moms, photographers like to dress up babies using their accessories or just take photos of them naked.
If you look at the photographers newborn portfolio, youll get a taste for what he or she will likely do and can prepare accordingly.
Of course, this doesnt apply if youre doing a DIY baby photography session with family and friends. If your babys a little older like 3 months+, youll probably want to have a cute outfit for the photos.
A New Baby Needs Practical Clothes
Next, those first few weeks and even months your baby isnt going out to the movies, out to eat and out socializing. The baby does not need 10 fancy outfits as likely they will only wear 1 or 2 and maybe only 1 or 2 times before growing out of it. Baby outfits, especially fancy ones, are sooo stinking cute, but they are not practical.
Resist the urge to buy these non-practical clothes and save your money. Typically these are the most expensive outfits too. You might be able to get 4-5 onesies or sleepers for what 1 fancy outfit would cost. Save your money and avoid getting lots of formal outfits as realistically your baby is not going to wear them.
Furthermore, get clothes that do not have lots of buttons, ties, or take a lot of maneuvering to get on or off. These clothes will be frustrating for both you and your baby and are not worth it.

Newborn Checklist: How Many Clothes Do I Need
There is a lot of preparation that goes into the arrival ofyour little one. Accumulating little outfits is one of the first things many expectingparents do. However, it is hard to guess how many clothes you will actually go through.
How many baby clothes does a newborn need? This is a questionmany expecting parents may ask themselves. And the answer is: it depends!
There are a few factors that may change the volume ofclothes you will need for your baby.
The location and time of year of your babys birth willinfluence what kind of clothes you will need for your young one. Babies born incolder climates or around winter will need more merino onesies, hats and jumperscompared to other babies.
The amount of washing you are expecting to do will alsoinfluence the amount of clothing you should have. Obviously, the more you arewilling/ able to wash your newborns clothes, the less you will actually needin rotation. However, we know that laundry is not always a priority, thereforehaving a few extra outfits wont hurt.
Your own personal lifestyle and budget may make an impact aswell. We know baby clothes can get expensive- therefore dont expect to need 50bodysuits in each size and colour. Besides, your baby will not be in newbornclothes for long. Hand-me-downs are excellent for keeping the costs down.
Each parent will have their own opinion about what clothing itemsare and are not necessary.
The following list is our recommendation based on personalexperience.
