What Age To Do Newborn Photos

What Are My Options If Ive Missed The Two

First Week with a Newborn Baby — Tips & Things I Wish I Knew.

So, if some photographers will photograph babies over two weeks, what are your options if youve missed the window?

First of all, I recommend picking up the phone and calling the photographers youre interested in having a shoot with. Most likely, every website you read will talk about the two-week or ten-day window, as this is the preferred time for newborn photographs, and the best time to achieve the type of work you see on that website. But if you pick up the phone and speak directly to each photographer youll probably find that some will be happy to photograph slightly older babies and some may offer special sessions for older newborn babies.

Now you might be wondering, how old is too old? And this answer really depends on the individual photographer. For some it may be three weeks or four weeks. For others it could be six or eight. Thats why I recommend speaking to each photographer individually.

If you find that all of the photographers think your baby is too old for posed photographs, or dont have any availability to photograph them you have two other options:

1. A lifestyle newborn photography shoot: Lifestyle newborn photo shoots typically take place at your home, and tend to focus on your baby within their new environment and their connections with their family. Because there isnt as much posing involved many photographers will offer lifestyle newborn photography sessions up to six or even eight weeks after your baby has been born.

Can I Schedule A Newborn Photo Session At My Home

My home studio is specifically designed for newborn sessions. Thats why, considering time and practicality, it will cost both of us a lot more to set up and photograph in your home. Also, you would have a lot less flexibility with prop choices and lighting. Photography being taken in a dedicated studio will provide you with a a better result.

What Age Is Best For Newborn Photos

What age is best for newborn photos? You’ve just arrived home with your new babyyou’ve counted their little fingers and toes and they’re perfect. You want professional images of your adorable baby, but you don’t know the best time to get them.

Most photographers will tell you that the best time to photograph a newborn is when they are between five to fourteen days old. That’s my preferred age to shoot at as well. That’s not a hard and fast rule, but it is, for the most part, accurate. One of the things that makes newborn photography special is the limber nature of the babies. They have been curled up in your womb for months and have incredible flexibility. That flexibility allows photographers to curl the babies into adorable, round, wrapped little bundles, or place them into posed positions that older babies may not be able to do as safely.

Every baby is different, of course. Preemie babies typically have flexibility longer than full term babies. Babies that are larger at birth may not be quite as flexible as their smaller counterparts. The general rule of thumb, though, is to try to get your photo shoot done between that five to fourteen days.

Where Possible Babies Younger Than 14 Days

Cute Babies High Resolution Wallpapers: Newly born 0 2 year age ...

Typically, we recommend scheduling your newborn baby photo shoot about 10 days after your due date. Once bub is born we then lock in a date and time for your newborn session.

7 to 10 days is our ideal age for a newborn portrait session as babies this age are pretty chilled, sleep most of the time and curl up easily in those gorgeous poses. While newborn smiles are not conscious yet, as new babies fall asleep they tend to grimace and pull faces that look just like a grin! Once bub hits two weeks old they tend to be more alert, and outgrow that fragile newborn look.

This age is great for capturing snuggles with parents, photos of baby feeding and close up shots of babys eyelashes, lips and feet. It’s also a wonderful time to capture some beautiful photos of baby with their siblings.

A de lumière photographer will come to you at home for your newborn baby photo shoot, this means that even if your bub is a little older than two weeks, we can still achieve gorgeous portraits. We blend a mix of lifestyle photography with a newborn portrait session, so we cater for all ages of babies.

If you have your heart set on those gorgeous curled up shots, then capturing baby within the first 14 days are imperative.

What Is The Best Age To Schedule Newborn Photos

Short Answer: Between 7 and 10 days old!

Long Answer: The absolute best time to take photos of your newborn is near the beginning of their second week when theyre between 7 and 10 days old. Why is that? At that age, your baby is still very sleepy , tiny , and flexible . Another consideration is that after that second week, many babies will begin cluster feeding. Aside from being a new challenge for parents to tackle, cluster feeding will often reduce the number of cute poses and setups that we can cover during your newborns first photo shoot.

All that said, its always better a little later than never! Scheduling newborn photos on days 14, 18, or 21 is much better than missing this once-in-a-lifetime photo op. The photos will be just as special and youll cherish them just as much well just change up which poses and newborn props I use to support all the ways in which your newborn is growing.

Should Newborn Portraits Be Done In The Hospital

Nope, no, definitely not.

Ok, that might be a bit harsh. Heres the deal, in the hospital no one is comfortable, its simply not home. Not home for you and not home for your baby.

Youve just been through a trauma, either through vaginal delivery or a c-section. And they frankly have just entered this bright and very noisy world where they are expected to eat and all sorts of other crazy new things.

From a technical perspective, hospital lighting is very harsh and not designed to make baby and mama look their best. Youre bloated and trying to figure out how to feed your baby.

Also, they dont do family portraits. This means you wont be in the images and frankly, that makes us sad. Youll look back and want to see the wonder you feel for this tiny little creature that just changed your life. One of my favorite images ever is of my oldest daughter in my husbands hands, you get to see just how little she was.

And a nurse is waking you up every two hours. Now does that sound like a recipe for amazing images that you want to cherish forever? Nope, take your time at the hospital to meet and simply be with the new love of your life.

Keep Your Baby Awake Before The Session

Indian baby Weight and Height chart

Its no secret that infants sleep a lot. But sometimes, their sleep patterns dont cooperate with our plans. If you want your little one sacked out during the photo session, so you can get those adorable sleepy newborn poses, keep them up for a while before your photographer arrives.

Making sure you keep your baby awake prior to a session is a great way to guarantee they will sleep through most of it. That will lead to peaceful pictures, instead of ones where they look enraged or red-faced from crying.

Newborn Photography For Older Babies

Case in point. I had beautiful baby Piper in the studio recently who was far from a sleeping, curled up newborn. She was a chunky 13 weeks old.

She was a gorgeous girly and lovely to work with, although obviously was so much bigger and more alert than the newborn babies that I am usually photographing in my studio.

OK, it was more challenging for me perhaps.

With her not sleeping as much as a days-old newborn would, it was certainly a completely different experience for me as the photographer.

I needed to be able to position her a little differently to how I would a tiny newborn but was still able to get those super sleepy poses parents love. When I have an older newborn in the studio I love to get those giggles and smiles too for parents. As you can see, Piper was full of fun!

The Exceptions: Twins Multiplets And Preemies

Premature babies, twins, and multiples all tend to be a bit smaller than babies that are born without multiples and are carried to full-term. They also might require a longer hospital stay at the beginning until theyre further along in their development.

In these cases, the window of time for capturing the perfect newborn photo is likely a bit longer. You will probably be able to get the types of shots youre looking for up to the 5-week mark.

But There Are Exceptions

The timeline above can serve as a guide for what to expect at each stage of your babys first weeks of life so you can schedule your newborn photos based on what you want from your session. However, I have specialized in newborn photography for many years and I can tell you with certainty that every baby has its own personality we just dont know what it is yet!

Some babies are very relaxed, mellow, and peaceful, and will let us easily pose them however we choose. Some will even hold the poses we set when they are awake. Other babies are more tense and dont like to be posed. Still, other babies are peaceful until we start trying to move their limbs around to pose them, and then they voice their objections very clearly.

Ultimately, no one can fully predict your babys newborn photo session. I can make an educated guess based on their age, but it can vary based on how your baby feels that day. Many babies are relaxed and easy to pose when they have full tummies unless they have reflux, which tends to add a lot of crying to the session.

Heres the good news, though: as unpredictable as babies can be, an experienced professional newborn photographer can get beautiful photos out of any session. Its a matter of learning how to interact with each baby, being extremely patient, and finding a way to capture beautiful photos in between any unhappy moments that pop up.

Warm The Space You Will Be Working In

Do This With Your Newborn to Promote Healthy Development

Now, you are ready to get to work. But there are a few things you still have to do. The most important is to heat the room you will be photographing baby in. Newborns can not regulate their body temperatures as well as older children or adults. So you will need to keep your space comfortable, cozy and warm. This is especially important during bare baby poses. You can use a space heater if your shooting area is usually cold.

When Do I Need To Schedule Our Newborn Session

We recommend booking your newborn session well before baby even arrives. Trust me, once your little one is here, youre going to want to soak in every moment. That is not the time to spend researching a photographer. Researching a photographer at that time is likely to feel overwhelming and possibly not happen at all. Itll feel good to check this off your to-do list before baby comes. And not only that, but you can also have confidence in the photographer youve chosen and possibly have had a chance to do a maternity session.

This way, the only thing you have to do is send us a quick message that your little one has arrived. Then we will get you scheduled and take care of the rest!

When Is The Best Time For Newborn Photos

Parents always ask when is the best time to take newborn photos. Today I will show you and talk you through different stages of newborn photos within the first 6 weeks.

In a short answer, I always say that to me there is no such thing as a perfect age when newborn photos should be taken. I see a lot on newborn photographers websites statements that your photos should be taken within XYZ days. I cant stress parents thinking that they have to come for the shoot within first 7 or so days. Every baby is different and every family has different levels of confidence/knowledge. Lets debunk this myth.

  • How about the age of 4+ weeks?
  • I started to offer newborn photoshoots over 10 years and over these years I have noticed various success in timings when to take newborn photos. Will talk from my personal experience. Remember that each newborn baby will have individual circumstances so dont take everything here for granted.
