Your newborn can sleep in a bassinet or a crib. This can be located in a parents room, a siblings room or in the newborns own room. Its important that you have your baby sleep in a safe place. Your baby should not sleep in your bed with you. This is dangerous because of the risk of suffocation, strangulation and sudden infant death syndrome .

You can bring the baby into your bed for feedings, but should return the baby to a crib as soon as you are done. Many experts recommend feeding your child while in a chair to avoid any injury that can happen while sleeping in a bed with the baby. Room-sharing with your baby is recommended, but not bed-sharing.

After spending nine months in a tight tummy, its no surprise that your newborn prefers a snug space now. Sure, hell grow into the crib eventually, but for now, he might prefer sleeping in a bassinet or cradle, which offers your baby a cozier, more contained space to settle into.

When Should I Put My Baby On A Sleep Schedule And Establish A Routine

If it seems like you and your newborn are operating on opposite schedules, its probably not your imagination. But dont bother trying to establish a soothing routine right away you both need a little time to adjust to your life together.

Once youve gotten used to your little ones daily and nightly patterns, in the first month or so, you can start giving hints feeding, rocking, a soothing bath, a lullaby and a story that tell your little one its time to settle down, relax and hopefully fall asleep. How Long Do Newborns Typically Sleep
