How to Get Your Social Security Card, Birth Certificate & Passport – Easy!

While the easiest way to secure your childs Social Security number is through the hospital paperwork above, not all babies are born at the hospital. Many babies are born at home or in another type of facility. Alternatively, some parents dont receive a birth request form from the hospital for some reason or another.

If any of the above applies to you, your Social Security Administration office is where you go to apply for your childs number. At your local Social Security office, youll need the following:

  • Form SS-5 – This is the Application for Social Security Number. You can fill this out in advance or at the office. Its available on the Social Security Administrations website.
  • Medical documents – Youll need at least two documents proving the age of your baby, their identity, and citizenship status. This is typically your childs birth certificate and medical records.
  • Parent identification – Finally, bring proof of your own identity. This is usually your drivers license or passport. You must provide at least two separate documents.

You can apply for your documents in person or by mail. Because youll need to provide official or certified copies of your documents, its usually easier to apply in person. There is no charge for a Social Security card.

The SSA will mail your card as soon as they have verified all required documents. You should receive the card within 10 business days from the date on the receipt. The replacement card will have the same number as the previous card.

What Is The Purpose Of The Social Security Number

The Social Security number is a nine-digit number which the U.S. government issues to all U.S. citizens . Eligible U.S. residents are able to apply for one as well. This number allows the government to keep track of your lifetime earnings as well as the number of years worked.

U.S. citizens need a SSN to be able to work. An employer will always ask for the social security number, and they will report your income to the Internal Revenue Service, IRS.

Instances when a person is asked to provide their Social Security card or number also include:

  • Opening an account with any U.S. financial institution
  • Applying for a federal loan
  • Applying for certain types of public assistance
  • Enrolling in Medicare
  • Filing your tax return
  • Getting a drivers license

Without a Social Security number, financial institutions will not be able to run a credit check, and therefore, making it more difficult to get a credit card or a loan.

How To Get Your Child A Social Security Number

Congratulations! You’re the proud parent of a newborn bundle of joy. Many things are swirling through your head right now, especially if this is your first child.

Acquiring a Social Security Number for your child is probably not near the top of your priority list, and it probably shouldn’t be but don’t let a Social Security number slip through the cracks. An SSN provides an important identity reference for your child throughout his or her life, and you may need his or her SSN for tax purposes, medical coverage, and government services.

The simplest way to acquire your child’s SSN is to fill out a birth registration form. Normally, you will be provided a form at the hospital while the mother is still registered as a patient. Simply check the box on that form requesting a SSN and provide the Social Security number of both parents. If a parental Social Security number is unknown, you may still apply for a number for your child.

Your child’s Social Security card application will be processed within one to five weeks, depending on your state. Allow another two weeks for the card to arrive in the mail.

If you were unable to fill out a birth registration form at the hospital for any reason, you can apply for your child’s Social Security Card at your local Social Security Administration office by filling out Form SS-5.

Do You Need to Replace Your Social Security Card?

In principle , the card is automatically created when the main insured person is affiliated with the CCSS, and then sent by post to the person’s official address of residence.

The card is delivered within 3 weeks:

    • to the active main insured person
    • after the employer has filed a new-employee declaration with the CCSS
    • after a self-employed worker, or an individual who has taken out voluntary insurance, has filed their own declaration with the CCSS
  • to co-insured persons, pensioners or persons receiving a replacement income after their application to the competent health insurance fund, i.e. the CNS, CMFEC, CMFEP or EMCFL.
  • Babies born in Luxembourg are automatically co-insured and the cards are sent by the competent health insurance fund.

For persons who are co-insured through their relationship with a cross-border worker, certain conditions must be satisfied.
