we fore-went cute play mats and let them play on blankets on the floor, and while we did buy toys, for the most part the babies wanted anythings else to play with.
You can purchase bottles and breast pumps as needed, rather than stockpiling them in advance only to find out you wont need those things.

Different Brands Sizes And Styles
One of the hardest things to figure out with baby clothes is that all baby brands are different. Their sizing of clothes are different and they have different styles.
Different brands size their clothes a bit differently. This means that a 3-6 mo clothing item may not fit the same in every brand. For instance, my kids wear some Nike clothing and it typically runs a size smaller than most brands. So my kids wear a size larger in Nike than they do in their Carter or Jumping Beans clothing.
Personally, an issue I had was that my babies were long with a thin torso. Certain bands had more rectangular onesies and shirts while others had more boxy/square tops. My kids needed the rectangular clothes to fit their body shape not the square tops. With those styles it would be a struggle to snap the onesie at the bottom, but the neck and shoulders would be huge.
Then, I had another clothing issue with my daughter due to her length and thicker thighs. With some brands and styles an outfit would not fit because I couldnt get the pants over her thighs even though that is what size she was in.
After time, once you know your babys body type, you will get to know different brands of clothing. Then you will find what brand of clothing you like for your child.

I put this list of newborn baby must haves together and ran it by several of my mom friends to make sure they agreed. I feel really confident in this list of main things you need for your 1st baby.
This list consists of infant care items that, if they are not purchased before the baby arrives, you might have to run out at a very inconvenient time to purchase when you finally realize they need or want them.
I tried to make this a top 10 post but, honestly, caring for a baby DOES require more than ten items, so I expanded my recommendations and stopped when it felt right.
Keep in mind that these are the items I recommend for your nursery. You really dont have to take much in your hospital bag because the hospital provides so much.
Youll want to bring going home outfits for you and your newborn, but you wont necessarily need to bring things like diapers or wipes.
Unless things have changed since we had our babies, the hospital provides necessities like that to get thru your hospital stay. Double check that, though, because your hospital could be different.
You may be wondering what baby registry I recommend as well. When I had my babies, all we could register for was Walmart and Babies-R-Us because most of our baby shower guests didnt have access to a Target or Amazon.
Now that Amazon is practically accessible by everyone now, for new mamas. Second to that is Target because of their simple return policy.

When To Start Buying Baby Stuff
You can obviously start buying baby stuff as soon as you find out you are pregnant, and indeed it may be hard to resist doing so and there’s nothing wrong with that!
Some women feel superstitious and think it’s bad luck to buy things too early .
You may wish to wait until around twelve weeks when you have your first scan and you are safely through the first trimester.
Then you can start researching cots, pushchairs and other big purchases, especially if you need to order them in advance, and you still have plenty of time.
Baby clothes are probably one of the most tempting things to start buying. But if you want to buy clothes specific to your baby’s gender, you will need to wait for the anomaly scan at twenty weeks.
You can of course start buying neutrally coloured bedding, vests and sleepsuits etc before this time.
Bear in mind that when you start stocking up on all your baby essentials you will need somewhere to store all this stuff, so if you don’t have much space maybe go easy on that nappy stockpile at first!
On another note make sure sure you have all your essential baby things ready and your hospital bag packed six weeks before your due date, just in case you are blessed with an early arrival!
Clothes A New Baby Needs
So now that we went over factors to consider when getting baby clothes, here is what clothes a new baby actually needs. I suggest getting these clothing items in a 0-3 month size. Depending on how large you anticipate your baby to be at the start, getting some of these items in the 3-6 month size would make sense too .

- 5-7 sleep n plays or sleepers for at night
- 2-3 swaddles
- 7 onesies
- 7 pants/shirt sets or outfits
- 5-7 pair baby socks
Start out with the basics and add anything as it becomes essential for you. Keep your receipts when you purchase items to make sure they fit and you actually use them. Also, you will likely get baby clothes as gifts at your shower and/or when the baby is born so do not go overboard buying baby clothes.

These are things that still make my newborn necessities list a couple of them might seem frivolous to the most hardcore minimalists, but these are the things I would buy again, or tell my daughter to buy for her new baby.
