In the womb, babies slept disjointed hours, never knowing night from day. This explains the long stretches of sleep during the day, and the frequent wake ups throughout the night. They sleep in erratic patterns throughout 24 hours.

But at around four weeks old, theyll begin to differentiate day and night and sleep longer during the evenings. This is when you can help your baby stay awake when its bright, and sleep for a longer period at night.

The result? Youll begin to sleep longer when your body needs it with him doing the same.

Tip: Make the room dark and subdued in the evenings so he has an easier time sleeping in long stretches at night. I bought by light-blocking curtains like these.

Newborn Sleep: What To Expect

All babies are different, and their sleep patterns can vary a lot. For these first few weeks, its a good idea just to let them nap when theyre tired, and to feed on demand when theyre hungry.

Newborns sleep a lot – around 16 out of every 24hours and they need eight to 12 feeds a day so they get enough food for growth and development. This means when theyre awake, theyre usually feeding, and after feeding, theyll probably want to go back to sleep. This seemingly never-ending feed-sleep cycle starts to change after three to four weeks, when your baby starts to take in their surroundings, and be a little more interactive with you. But still, at this age, there isnt much time for play.

Very young babies tend to sleep on and off through the day and the night, and the length of those sleeps can vary.

Keeping newborns awake during the day wont make them sleep more at night. At this stage, let them sleep when theyre tired, and feed them when theyre hungry. Overtired babies often wake more frequently.

Sleeping Through The Night What It Is And What It Isnt

Experts generally consider sleeping through the night as sleeping 6 to 9 hours at a time for children and adults. But for babies, sleeping through the night may mean your child still needs to breastfeed or take a bottle remember, tiny tummies mean hunger calls often but is able to fall back to sleep after.

So your 3-month-old sleeping through the night doesnt necessarily mean youre getting uninterrupted sleep. But it does mean your child is getting some quality shut-eye to help with their development and growth.

Around two-thirds of babies truly sleep uninterrupted for that blissful 6 to 9 hours by the time theyre 6 months of age.

When Should Babies Start Sleeping Through The Night

Some babies begin sleeping through the night around six months of age. At six months, about 62% of babies sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours. By the time they reach one year, about 71% of babies sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours at night.

Infants three months and younger generally dont sleep throughout the night without waking up to be fed. Parents shouldnt be concerned if their baby doesnt sleep throughout the night without waking up, even if the baby is a year old.

Recognize When Baby Is Sleepy

Learn to recognize when your baby is getting sleepy. Knowing when your baby is tired and ready for sleep is the key to encouraging a healthy sleep schedule. In a newborn, your baby might begin to yawn, close their fists, or bat at their ears. They also might get fussy, frown, have fluttering eyelids, or stare off into space without focusing.

How Do I Deal With Catnapping

If your baby is catnapping, your best line of defence is to allow them to learn to self-settle at the start of naps. Even then, some babies will need help to resettle during a nap to get a longer stretch of sleep – this is completely normal and for some babies it can last quite a while! Resettling them here rather than getting them up from their nap helps teach them to sleep for longer.

It is in this tricky sleep stage that it is important to foster good sleep habits, so aiming to have your baby do at least one nap a day in their bed is a great way to head towards better sleep.

How Much A Newborn Sleeps

Newborns sleep a lot. In fact, newborns sleep 14 to 17 hours a day but they cant stay awake long between sleep periods. Your newborn might only stay awake for 1 to 2 hours throughout the day and night. Of course, you want most of their sleep to be at night with the 1 to 2 hours of awake time during the day. Baby Sleep Schedule: 8 To 12 Months

How can I get my newborn to sleep at night?

Baby sleep is a little like a roller coaster with its ups and downs, thrills, and scaries. And right now, smack in the second half of your babys first year, a frightening dip might be fast approaching! At this age, some little ones start developing separation anxiety and bedtime and others are so excited about their newly developing skills, that they find it more difficult to settle down.

Total Sleep for 8- to 12-Month-Olds: By the time your baby hits 8 months, they should be snoozing between 12 to 14 hours a day.

Wake Time for 8- to 12-Month-Olds: The day often starts around 6 to 7am for these tots.

Napping for 8- to 12-Month-Olds: Your little one will likely still be taking two naps a day. For some babies, those naps are brief , while other babies may nap for up to two hours at this age.

Bedtime for 8- to 12-Month-Olds: Night-night often falls somewhere between 7 and 9pm now.

Nighttime Sleep for 8- to 12-Month-Olds: .Your baby’s longest stretch is likely a glorious seven to 10 hours a night! Wooo!

How Can I Get My Baby Used To Night And Day

It’s a good idea to teach your baby that night-time is different from daytime from the start. During the day, open curtains, play games and don’t worry too much about everyday noises when they sleep.

At night, you might find it helpful to:

  • keep the lights down low
  • not talk much and keep your voice quiet
  • put your baby down as soon as they’ve been fed and changed
  • not change your baby unless they need it
  • not play with your baby

Your baby will gradually learn that night-time is for sleeping.

How Long Do Newborns Sleep At Night

You might be researching newborn sleep patterns and begin to see things about making bedtime earlier. But, dont do this too early! Thats because newborns will often sleep a maximum of 8-10 hours at night beginning around 6 weeks old, on average. After these 8-10 hours, they might stay awake for playtime for 1-2 hours at a time and you dont want that to be 3:00 or 4:00 a.m.! Your newborn might stay awake from 3:30 to 5:00 a.m. and then take a 2-hour nap, for example. So, keep bedtime later until your baby extends their nighttime sleep to 11-12 hours which occurs around 3 months old.

Even though your newborn might sleep 8-10 hours at night, its important not to let them sleep through feedings until their doctor approves. This is usually after your baby has doubled their weight, established a good weight gain, and is growing appropriately. Every baby is different so be sure to get specific instructions from your doctor.

The newborn days are often the most exhausting for parents because you might be only sleeping in 1 1/2 to 2-hour chunks yourself but take heart its a relatively short period of time in your babys life! It only feels like years.

What If My Baby Needs More Sleep

Sleep is a nutrient for your baby. It sustains their physical, mental, emotional and social development, but can they have too much of a good thing?

The answer is yes! Too MUCH day sleep can lead to difficulties settling, a lot of night waking and early morning waking – simply because your baby needs more awake time.

Now, if your baby is having some longer naps during the day, but is still settling easily and sleeping well overnight – great! Enjoy the extra sleep while you can! If they are settling and sleeping well both day AND night, it means their balance of awake time and sleep is spot on.

BUT if your little one is becoming difficult to settle, or they have started to wake more overnight, it might be time to take a closer look at the awake time and sleep they are having during the day. And here comes the sometimes contentious part – you may need to WAKE YOUR BABY.

I know, shocking right? While it might seem counter-intuitive to wake a sleeping baby, we do advise doing this if your baby is at risk of having had too many daytime sleep hours, or they are sleeping for too long in the morning nap, which will mean their lunch nap is consequently shorter, or if they’re sleeping too late or long in the afternoon, which will have a negative impact on their bedtime settling and nighttime sleep. Once a baby begins to regularly sleep through the night, parents are often unhappy when the baby starts to wake up at night again. This often happens at about 6 months old. Over the first year of life, your baby will sleep and nap a lot from 12 up to 18 hours a day. The amount of sleep an infant gets at any one stretch of time is mostly ruled by hunger. Newborns will wake up and want to be fed about every three to four hours at first. Do not let your newborn sleep longer than five hours at a time in the first five to six weeks. Thereafter, you can keep the following general milestones in mind:

  • By six months, many babies can go for five to six hours or more without the need to feed and will begin to “sleep through the night.”
  • Daytime naps reduce in number as the baby grows. A 2-month-old may nap up to four times a day, whereas an older infant may nap only one to two times a day.

When Your Baby Can Hold His Head Up

In the first few months, carrying your baby meant using both your arms to cradle and support his head. His neck isnt strong enough to hold his head upright, so you need both arms to carry him around.

But in due time, hell be able to hold his own head, making it easier to carry him with just one arm. With at least one free arm, carrying him becomes easier to get things done and move around. Imagine simple conveniences like holding him in one arm while you use the other to open the door.

Every baby develops differently, but my eldest was able to hold his head up around four months. The twinsborn prematurelyheld theirs even later than that.

What Should Babies Sleep In

Expert advice on what babies should wear to bed is relatively specific. Swaddling your baby snugly in a blanket might be appropriate if done correctly during the first two months of life. Swaddling can lead to less crying and better sleep , but it becomes unsafe once a baby starts attempting to roll over. Babies in a swaddle should always be placed on their back and never on their stomach. Alternatives to swaddling include sleep sacks or wearable blankets.

Since infants should not have blankets or pillows with them as they sleep, their sleepwear needs to provide warmth without leading to overheating. It should also be relatively snug and secure, since anything too loose or easy to remove could create a choking hazard. In a warmer sleep environment, one layer of clothing may be acceptable. However, it is generally advised that babies should sleep in a room that is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit , which means you might want to dress them in more than one layer .
