When Is The Best Time For A Newborn Photo Shoot
Before looking at when to book your shoot, it might be helpful to explain when the best time to take newborn photographs is.
I specialise in posed newborn photography, and for this style of photography the ideal window for the shoot is when your baby is aged between 5 and 14 days old.
There are two reasons for this first because babies are typically very sleepy during the first two weeks after their birth.
And secondly because during the first two weeks most babies enjoy being in the curly fetal position that they were in in the womb.
These two things make the sleepy, curly newborn poses comfortable for your baby and mean theyre likely to be settled and relaxed throughout the shoot.

Should Mothers/fathers Be In Newborn Photos
Unequivocally yes mom, dad, and siblings should get in the photo.
We know you might not feel your best. Heck, you might not even be cleared to drive yet. But you will never regret having those memories. And you cant get them back. Dont regret it. Get in the picture.

The great thing is, you will have parents who can act as your assistants, holding and posing the baby. They can also make them laugh, and put them back to sleep.
This doesnt mean you shouldnt invest in a few pieces of equipment to help this process.

At What Age Should Newborn Photos Be Taken
The best time for newborn photos is between 7 and 10 days after birth. The first few days are hard, youre just meeting each other and figuring each other out.
If you carried your baby, youre also still bloated and frankly tired.
The younger the baby, the more naturally they pose like they are still in the womb. Thats how you get those curly, womb-like newborn poses.
Now, all that being said. Anytime is literally the perfect time for newborn photos.
Frankly, my first daughters newborn pictures were done at 6 weeks, I didnt have this amazing guide to tell me I should do them sooner. And my second daughter was 6 weeks premature. Since we always recommend adjusting, hers were also done at 6 weeks.
I love and cherish our newborn photos as much as if they were taken between 7-10 days.
Our recommendation is to book your newborn photo session in advance based on your due date, then adjust as needed. Theyre only this little once, so getting them as close to the 7-10 days as possible ensures you capture them before they grow too much!
When Should You Book Babys Newborn Photoshoot
There is no hard and fast rule as to when to book babys first photo session. Any time after your 20-week scan is often suggested. You and your photographer will base the appointment date on your due date and the fact that newborn photos are best taken when baby is between 5 and 10 days old.
Try not to wait too late into your pregnancy, however, to select a photographer and book the date. Some photographers can be booked out months in advance so securing your date early is a good idea. Certainly, you will want to make sure the photographer of your choice has already pencilled you in with 3 to 4 weeks to spare before baby is due to arrive.
Plus, booking early gives you time to go through the portfolios of different photographers to find the one you feel is the best match for you. It also gives you time to decide where the session will take place at home or in-studio. Whats more, you will have time to think about any sentimental props or keepsakes you would like to use in the photos and to discuss these with the photographer.
Many photographers specialize in maternity and newborn photography. If you decide to use the same photographer for both, then a great idea is to book the newborn shoot at the same time you are booking your maternity shoot.

Tip 5 Be Careful With Creative Newborn Props
Different props can make your images look perfect or, vice versa, spoil all your efforts. Judging by my experience, the best way is to prepare all the props in advance. Dont take all your blankets, toys, flowers, baskets, valises and decorations to each photo shoot. Its better to choose several most suitable variants. You can even ask the parents for help. Sometimes, mothers and fathers are initiative and bring some things that are important to their families to the photo session.

Babies Older Than Two Weeks
On occasion, youll have clients who want to book a session with their baby who is older than two weeks of age. Thats OK! Dont turn them away. Just inform the parents that babies older than two weeks might not curl up as easily or like their clothes off. When you have a session with an older baby, youll need to focus more on images of the baby dressed, awake, nicely tucked in a basket, or handheld shots. Not all parents are concerned about getting the early, curly poses. They just want photos of their baby. It is best to let them know not to expect those types of poses, but that you are happy to create beautiful portraits for them!
I never cancel a newborn or baby session merely because the baby has missed the window of time for the curly shots. Instead, Ill refocus the session on the fact that the baby may be awake most, if not all, of the session. Be prepared and plan your setups accordingly. Wrapped shots, above shots, and handheld shots are the best for babies who are awake. Assure the parents that they will walk away with gorgeous photos of their baby no matter what the age.
This little sweetie is Nora, my youngest granddaughter. She was seven weeks old at this photo shoot and wanted nothing to do with sleep. Sometimes awake shots can make the most compelling photographs.

Safety Tips for Photographing Newborns
Whats The Best Time Of Day To Take Newborn Photos
Check with your photographer on when they recommend getting newborn photos taken. Some families choose for the photographer to come into their home and take photos in the nursery or the master bedroom.
Youll want to asses when you get good sunlight in those areas of your home and go from there.
We chose to go to our photographers studio and have the photos taken there. I wanted to use all of her props like buckets and backdrops because I think those are just the cutest! Instead of feeling like I needed to clean and stage my home, I felt it was easier for us to go to her.
Your photographer will know when the light will come into their studio the best, but I imagine early to mid-morning will work for most photos.

We Need Time To Prepare Everything
Most newborn photographers limit their sessions to a specific quantity per month. It has to do with all the preparation required by this type of session. Im talking about cleaning the studio physical space, washing clothes and props, creating scenarios, assembling and organizing sets. Not to mention administrative tasks like sending contracts, analyzing the style questionnaire, and putting actual face time with the clients.
Right after mommy and/or daddy choose me to photograph their baby, sign the contract and pay the invoice, I book their date and begin to work. My sole purpose is to create a customized newborn photography session that will fulfill the parents expectations in the best way possible. That includes special requests that I often receive from them, which require the purchase of new props and accessories. And, since most of the vendors are artisans, sometimes it takes time to have those beautiful pieces ready.
Tip 11 Select Pastel Tones To Make The Baby Shine
Choosing the clothes, props for the baby and other baby boy or baby girl pic ideas, try to pick similar colors and tones in order not to divert attention from the newborn. If you have trouble with the lighting, it is better to choose clothes in light tones. You can also try to create interesting newborn photo ideas by adding some props with texture, such as a knit blanket. If you have more blankets, you can surely use them as a background, as they will look very beautiful and neat.

I did this book on MyPublisher. Its the 15 x 11.5 deluxe hardcover, which is big and dramatic. I do yearly albums in the classic linen 11.25 x 8.75, which I love, but this special book calls for something more dynamic. The only thing I would change would be the size of text I used. It blew up just a little too big in the larger format.
Its a big task to gather everything and organize it into a baby book, but its worth the time because you and your child will cherish it. Ok, I think Im motivated now to go start my second one!

Tips For Setting Up Your Home Studio
Your studio is where all the gear comes together. This is your controlled environment. This is where you set up your camera, lighting, and other accessories.
These allow you to take portraits in the style and manner that suits you. If youre getting started, youll want to set up one that is affordable.
Of course, setup isnt everything. You will still need to work with the subject in the studio. This way, you get the look, feel, and the effect that you want in the portrait.
Get comfortable with working in the context of the studio. The faster youll do this, the faster you will be able to improve your newborn portraiture.
Second Trimester: Ultrasound And Heartbeat
There is nothing like having that first ultrasound and hearing your sweet babys heartbeat going strong! We have found that most moms reach out to us after that 20 week ultrasound when they know all is good with baby and may even know the gender! We love it when moms reach out to book us at this stage because we have time to talk about a maternity session as well and make sure that is scheduled enough in advance so we do not have to worry about getting to close to the due date.
Also, most photographers request a session fee or deposit to hold dates, so this way you can pay it now, and not have an extra payment due right at the newborn session.
One last thing about this time frame, is that the good photographers book out fast and far. You may think you have time, but remember that newborn photographers do not and can not schedule to many sessions a week because our schedules have to be flexible to babies.they come when they want to and we need to leave enough time to be able to reschedule if baby comes early or later than the due date. There are a lot of newborn photographers out there, but if you found one you love, dont wait to long and then be disappointed when they sadly can not fit you in. Most photographers will schedule the newborn photography session one week after the due date.
