In general, though, newborns sleep for up to 16 or 17 hours in 24-hour period, but the sleep doesnât happen all at once. Myth: Babies Younger Than 6 Months Aren’t Capable Of Sleeping Through The Night

FACT: A babys ability to sleep through the night depends on many factors their weight, their daily milk and food intake, their sleep environment, whether theyre swaddled or not , the temperature in their room, how much day sleep theyve had, whether theyre able to settle themselves to sleep etc.

If all of these factors are lined up though, it is completely possible for a baby as young as 6 weeks to sleep through the night.

What Is Bedside Sleeping

Bedside sleeping is when your baby sleeps in a bedside cot. This allows you to be close to them without sharing the same bed.

The idea is that the bedside cot attaches securely to your bed, at the same level as your mattress with the side next to you open. Then you can reach out to your baby without the bother of getting out of bed.

Theres limited research on bedside cots but possible benefits include:

  • Making life easier when your movements are limited after a caesarean .
  • Closeness might help with bonding.
  • You can easily settle your baby back to sleep.
  • Your baby will be nearby for night feeds.
  • It might encourage breastfeeding if you had an intervention-free birth.

Can Newborns Sleep Too Much

Many parents wonder whether their baby is sleeping too little or too much. This is an understandable concern, as you want your baby to be sleeping just the right amount.In your newbornâs first weeks, sheâll need to be fed about every three to four hours. Where Should Baby Nap

Ideally, babys naps should be taken in the same place every dayconsistency will make it easier for your little one to fall and stay asleep. Usually that place is where baby sleeps at night, either in a crib or bassinet, which are generally the safest, most comfortable places for infants to sleep.

Of course, its not always possible to have a nap in their usual spot. If you need to have baby nap on the go, its okay for them to occasionally sleep in a stroller or car seat, but it shouldnt be the norm. A baby napping in a dark bedroom with space to get comfortable will have much more predictable and nourishing sleep than a baby being pushed in a stroller whos at risk for being awoken by a passing ambulance, she explains.

Should I Put My Newborn Baby On A Sleep Schedule

No. It’s normal for your newborn baby to have an irregular sleep pattern. Part of that comes from the need to eat frequently and sleep a lot. Most experts recommend following your baby’s cues during the first weeks of their life, including feeding them on demand.

Still, you can start to follow a schedule of sorts over this first month by establishing some consistent routines, like eating, “playing,” and then sleeping. As your baby starts to sort out their sleep rhythms, having these routines in place and introducing good sleep habits can help them more easily settle into a schedule as they get older.

Getting outside into daylight, especially in the morning, will also help your newborn learn to tell day from night and start to get on a more predictable schedule.

Your Baby Needs A Better Sleep Environment
