Let Him Fall Into Deep Sleep Before Putting Him Down
When your baby falls asleep during a feed, dont hurry to transfer him to his cot.

In fact, experts actually recommend limiting the time your baby spends in a car seat, bouncer or swing to 30 minutes, mostly for developmental reasons and the risk of developing positional plagiocephaly . However, wed like to acknowledge that this 30-minute maximum is downright impossible on road trips, for parents who have long work or daycare commutes, or when the swing is truly the only place you can get your infant to nap. There is no evidence that aspiration is more common among healthy infants who sleep in the supine position than among healthy infants who sleep in the prone position.
Furthermore, in countries that have seen a major change in infant sleep positionfrom mainly stomach sleeping to mostly back sleepingthe incidence of serious or fatal choking has not increased.
In fact, babies may actually clear secretions better when placed on their backs. When babies are in the back sleep position, the trachea lies on top of the esophagus.
Anything regurgitated or refluxed from the esophagus must work against gravity to be aspirated into the trachea. Conversely, when an infant is in the stomach sleep position, anything regurgitated or refluxed will pool at the opening of the trachea, making it easier for the infant to aspirate.
Also, chemosensitive tissue that initiates the reflex is more prominent on the posterior versus anterior pharyngeal wall, thus suggesting an even greater protection against aspiration when the baby is lying on his or her back.
Of the very few reported cases of death due to choking, most of the infants were in the stomach sleep position.

How To Break Babys Habit Of Sleeping In A Swing
McGinn adds that if you want to develop good sleep habits, you need to get your baby used to sleeping in their crib anyway. What I tell parents is the only way your baby is going to get used to their crib is by putting them in their crib and being really consistent with it, she says, even if they cry or protest at first. You have to stick with it for it to work.

Harvey Karp, pediatrician and author of Happiest Baby on the Block, has become a vocal advocate for safe sleep, while educating parents on helpful tips to actually accomplish a restful night.
Swaddling encouraged by Karp and others mimics the tight quarters in the womb, and may also help prevent babies from startling themselves awake during their sleep.
In addition, Karp recommends using loud, rumbling sounds to imitate the womb with a sound machine for naps and sleep.
He has found the side and stomach position to be soothing to babies, and will hold them in those positions while swaying, swinging, and shushing them .
Karps methods show how the stomach position, along with his other tricks, activate a calming mechanisms in babies that are up to 3 months old, explaining why some babies would just love to sleep on their stomachs. But once your baby is in a calm, sleepy state, put them to bed on their back.
In theory, if youre awake and alert, allowing your little one to nap on your chest isnt inherently harmful, as long as there is no risk of you falling asleep or being too distracted in any way to ensure a safe situation.
But lets be honest as parents of newborns, were always prone to nodding off. And baby can roll off of you in an unexpected second.
Other ways parents can help to ensure safety during sleep are:

- Do not smoke: People who smoke should never smoke in the house or around the baby.
- Do not use weighted blankets: Avoid using these or similar devices.

What If Your Baby Rolls Onto Their Stomach Themselves For Sleep Before 1 Year
Like we mentioned, the guidelines recommend you continue to put your baby to sleep on their back until age 1, even though around 6 months old or even earlier theyll be able to roll over both ways naturally. Once this happens, its generally OK to let your little one sleep in this position.
This typically lines up with an age in which the peak of SIDS has passed, although there continues to be some risk until age 1.
To be safe, your baby should be rolling over consistently in both directions, tummy to back and back to tummy, before you start leaving them in their preferred sleeping position.
If they arent consistently and intentionally rolling yet but somehow end up on their tummy while sleeping, then yes, hard as it is you need to gently put them back on their back. Hopefully they wont stir too much.
When Should I Call The Doctor
When youre exhausted, it may be tempting to bring your infant to bed with you or fall asleep holding them on the sofa or in a chair. Unfortunately, all of these scenarios greatly increase the risk of SIDS. If nobody in your household is sleeping, it may be time to ask for help.
Lactation consultants, infant sleep specialists, and doctors are all available to help. They should be able to offer some tools and advice to get everyone the rest they need.
There are a few exceptions when doctors may recommend placing babies on their tummies for sleep. In these situations, doctors should also provide some guidelines on how to go about this in the safest way.
