How to Get a Baby to Sleep: Tips from Pediatrician Dr. Gurinder Dabhia | San Diego Health

Babies, like adults, have various stages and depths of sleep. Depending on the stage, the baby may actively move or lie very still. Infant sleep patterns begin forming during the last months of pregnancy?active sleep first, then quiet sleep by about the eighth month. There are two types of sleep:

  • REM . This is a light sleep when dreams occur and the eyes move rapidly back and forth. Although babies spend about 16 hours each day sleeping, about half of this is in REM sleep. Older children and adults sleep fewer hours and spend much less time in REM sleep.

  • Non-REM sleep. Non-REM has 4 stages:

  • Stage 1: drowsiness, eyes droop, may open and close, dozing

  • Stage 2: light sleep, the baby moves and may startle or jump with sounds

  • Stage 3: deep sleep, the baby is quiet and does not move

  • Stage 4: very deep sleep, the baby is quiet and does not move

A baby enters stage 1 at the beginning of the sleep cycle, then moves into stage 2, then 3, then 4, then back to 3, then 2, then to REM. These cycles may occur several times during sleep. Babies may awaken as they pass from deep sleep to light sleep and may have difficulty going back to sleep in the first few months.

Week Old Sleep Schedule Development And Sleep Patterns

Your newborns sleep patterns: A 1-week old will sleep upwards of 16-18+ hours in a day, but babies this age tend to sleep in chunks of 2 hours at a time and will need to eat that often. It is important to feed 1-week-old babies often to ensure proper weight gain and, if youre breastfeeding, it helps establish your milk supply. So, even if your baby wants to sleep longer than 2 hours, you will need to wake him or her to feed. Its very likely your baby will go right back to sleep after a feeding and diaper change quite a bit of the time. Or, at least, it might feel that way.

Another thing to keep in mind is that your babys night sleep will not be very long just yet. In fact, late bedtimes are common at these younger ages and many newborns mix up day and night. This means if they are awake at all, they are awake at night when you are sleeping and then sleep in very long stretches during the day. Understandably, you may be wishing they would sleep that long at night. If so, you will want to consider correcting your newborns day/night confusion if they dont correct it themselves in the next week or so.

Put Your Sleepy Baby To Bed

Starting when your baby is 6 to 12 weeks old, soothe them until they are drowsy. When they are on the verge of sleep, put them down and let them drift off on their own. Don’t wait until they are fully asleep in your arms this could be a behavior that may become a struggle to get rid of later in their life.

This routine will teach your baby to soothe themselves to sleep, and you won’t need to rock or cuddle them to sleep every time they wake up during the night.

If your baby has trouble settling down, try moving their bedtime earlier, not later. Being overtired can make it hard to nod off.

What Can You Do If Your Child Doesnt Sleep Enough

It is estimated that 25% of young children deal with sleeping problems or excessive daytime sleepiness, and these issues can affect older children and teens as well. While the nature of sleeping challenges vary, parents should talk with their children about sleep and raise the issue with their pediatrician if there are signs of severe or persistent problems, including insomnia.

Helping children sleep often starts with creating a bedroom environment that is peaceful, quiet, and comfortable. Having an appropriate mattress and minimizing distractions, such as from TV or other electronic devices, can make it easier for children of any age to get consistent sleep.

Establishing healthy sleep habits, including a stable sleep schedule and pre-bed routine, can reinforce the importance of bedtime and cut down on night-to-night variability in sleep. Giving children an opportunity to use up their energy during the day and to unwind before bedtime can make it easier for them to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night.

Let Your Baby Cry It Out

Baby Sleep: How Much, When, How Long?

One crying-it-out type of sleep training is the well-known Ferber Method, also known as “Progressive Watching” or “Graduated Extinction.” The goal is to teach your baby how to sleep on their own and put themselves back to sleep if they wake up during the night. Richard Ferber, MD, director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children’s Hospital Boston, developed this method. He advises parents not to start this training until their baby is at least 5 or 6 months old. Heres an overview of how its done:

  • Put your baby in their crib — drowsy, but awake. Once you’ve finished their bedtime routine, leave the room.
  • If your baby cries, wait a few minutes before you check on them. The amount of time you wait depends on you and your baby. You might start waiting somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes.
  • When you re-enter your babys room, try to console them. But do not pick them up and do not stay for more than 2 or 3 minutes, even if they are still crying when you leave. Seeing your face will be enough to assure your baby that you are close by so they can eventually fall asleep on their own.
  • If they continue crying, gradually increase the amount of time you wait before going in to check on them again. For instance, if you wait 3 minutes the first time, wait 5 minutes the second time, and 10 minutes each time after that.
  • The next night, wait 5 minutes the first time, 10 minutes the second time, and 12 minutes each time after that.

Dont Wake Your Baby To Feed After 2 Months

If your baby is gaining weight properly, you dont have to wake them at night for feedings. Your baby needs to find them own sleep schedule. Once they are eating more in the daytime, they dont need to wake and eat at night.

Here are some instances where you should wake your baby:

  • They are sleeping more in the day than the night and missing their daytime feeds.
  • Dont let them go more than 4 hours without eating during the day. You may need to wake the baby up to feed at night, but it is probably better to try to change your babys daytime habits rather than continuing to wake them every 4 hours at night.

Your babys pediatrician will give you advice for your baby. For premature or special-needs babies, you may need to adjust feedings.

Week Old Sleep Schedule / 4 Month Old Sleep Schedule Development And Sleep Patterns

16 weeks is the last that we consider a newborn. Your baby should be awake a lot more during the day and developing some personality! By this age, I knew my son was very spirited and persistent, and I had challenges in my future! He did end up inspiring an entire website after all.

At 16 weeks old or 4 months, the main sleep problem we see is the famous 4 Month Sleep Regression. Babies tend to wake up frequently at night and take short naps after this regression begins. However, keep in mind that this can occur as early as 12 weeks old or as late as 5 months old. Some babies will go back to sleeping well while others will need more help learning how to sleep in longer stretches at night and take longer naps.

Normal Sleep Patterns For Babies

Newborns typically split their 1417 hours of sleep between daytime and nighttime sleep, though in small chunks of time. Babies dont typically sleep longer stretches until about 3 to 6 months old.

When you bring your newborn home, theyll take turns sleeping and waking up ready to feed. A newborn baby might sleep for 1 1/2 to 3 hours and then wake up hungry.

Your little one may also need an equal number of diaper changes. Your best bet is to try to get some shut-eye while theyre snoozing, no matter what time of the day it is.

Your babys sleep patterns will change as they grow, week by week.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants 4 to 12 months old should get between 12 and 16 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.

Let your doctor know if you think your newborn is sleeping too much or too little:

  • If your baby is a fresh newborn, 3 months or under, they shouldnt have less than 11 hours of sleep and not more than 19 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.
  • Babies 4 to 11 months shouldnt get less than 10 hours of sleep and not more than 18 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.

Ages 03 Months: The Fourth Trimester

How do I get my baby to sleep through the night?

You were probably told that pregnancy consists of three trimesters. So whats this about a fourth one?

The fourth trimester, or newborn period, is the timeframe when your baby is 03 months. Its known as the fourth trimester because your baby is adjusting to time outside your womb and sometimes, quite honestly, misses it and wishes to be back in it!

Some newborns have their days and nights confused, so they sleep during the day and are often awake at night. Their stomachs are tiny, so they need to eat every 23 hours. Your baby will usually make this need loud and clear, but talk to your pediatrician.

In the first couple of weeks, its possible that youll need to wake your baby for feedings if theyre not waking on their own at these intervals, especially if they havent gotten back to their birthweight yet.

A lot of development also occurs during these months, so your sleepless nights will pay off with interest.

Establishing A Bedtime Routine

You may feel ready to introduce a bedtime routine when your baby is around 3 months old. Getting them into a simple, soothing bedtime routine can be helpful for everyone and can help prevent sleeping problems later on. It’s also great one-to-one time with your baby. Here are some things to try:

  • dimming the lights in the room to create a calm atmosphere
  • giving them a goodnight kiss and cuddle
  • singing a lullaby or having a wind-up musical mobile that you can turn on when you’ve put your baby to bed

When Should Babies Start Sleeping Through The Night

Some babies begin sleeping through the night around six months of age. At six months, about 62% of babies sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours. By the time they reach one year, about 71% of babies sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours at night.

Infants three months and younger generally don’t sleep throughout the night without waking up to be fed. Parents shouldn’t be concerned if their baby doesn’t sleep throughout the night without waking up, even if the baby is a year old.

How Do I Make Sure My Baby Gets The Right Amount Of Sleep

Overstimulation during the day can cause your baby to either sleep too little or sleep when they should be eating, due to exhaustion. Newborn babies need to be fed frequently to ensure proper development.

Learning your baby’s sleep cycle

While your baby has your nose or eyes, the two of you couldn’t be farther apart when it comes to sleep cycle! The main reason your newborn’s sleep patterns are unpredictable is because of their evolving sleep cycle.

Adults can easily pass from one sleep cycle into the next without completely waking up. Newborns, however, don’t stay in deep sleep for long periods at a time, so they are more susceptible to frequent wake-ups. How Long Will My Baby Sleep

How long should your child sleep?

Here we take a look at how long your baby will sleep for depending on its age.

Birth to Three Months

  • Every baby is different, but most infants this age will sleep between 14 and 17 hours a day, including naps.
  • Some newborns might get by on less and a few prefer more sleep time .
  • Waking several times at night to feed is completely normal.

Three to Six Months

  • After four months of age, the baby will likely sleep between 12 and 15 hours a day, including naps.
  • Many infants aged between three and six months are able to sleep five hours at a time, which experts consider sleeping through the night.

Six to Nine Months

  • The baby is finally at the age when they will reliably sleep for much longer at night.

A newborn will spend about 50 per cent of his or her sleeping cycles in this stage, as opposed to an adult, with only 20 per cent.

About halfway through a sleep cycle, the baby falls into quiet sleep, which is characterised by slower, rhythmic breathing, less movement and no eyelid fluttering.

Quiet sleep is the end of the sleep cycle, which means that the baby will either wake up or return to active sleep.

From six months onwards, babies develop more stages that resemble adults and gradually replace quiet sleep.

The duration of their sleep cycles also lengthen and the time spent in active sleep shortens.

Until the age of at least a year, babies and infants will have a much lighter sleep than an adult.
