By law, childrens pajamas must comply with the Consumer Product Safety Commissions ruling that they either be snug-fitting or made from materials that pass specific flammability tests. Check tags for chemical fire-retardants as these may irritate skin. When possible, select tight-fitting pajamas that still allow a full range of motion.

Short or long two-piece pajamas or footed onesies are a good option to keep your toddler covered and comfortable through the night. Footed sleep sacks can still be used at this age as well.   • On their back until they are able to move and choose their own sleeping position.

  • The crib or cot should have no side cushions or padding.
  • 5 Baby should be covered in a blanket or sheet depending on the temperature, which is tightly tucked in to avoid smothering.
  • The use of a pacifier has been linked to a reduction in deaths from SIDS so this is safe to use if you choose to.
  • Baby should sleep alone in your room. Co sleeping causes the deaths of 133 babies each year.

Other Baby Sleeping Safety Tips

To keep your sleeping baby as safe as possible:

  • Do not smoke anywhere near your baby.
  • Check that your babys cot, bedside cot or travel cot conforms to safety standards.
  • Dont use bumpers or pillows.

All babies are different, and their sleep patterns can vary a lot. For these first few weeks, its a good idea just to let them nap when theyre tired, and to feed on demand when theyre hungry.

Dont Buy Those Cute Crib Bumper Sets You See On Blogs And In Catalogs

This ones pretty easy to follow: dont use crib bumpers. They are a SIDS risk, the sale of them is even banned in some US states, and doctors have been lobbying against crib bumpers for years. Yes, some babies flail around a lot in their sleep, especially when theyre on the verge of learning to roll, crawl, or walk. But they probably wont seriously injure themselves by bumping their heads on a crib rail. While those breathable mesh bumpers do a good job of keeping soothers from poking out of the crib slats, they are not recommended due to the risk of entanglement and strangulation. And while were at it, you shouldnt use a DockATot or infant lounger for unsupervised sleep inside the crib, either. Theyre technically no longer available in Canada, but similar products are still on the market.
