You Don’t Have To Hole Up At Home
“Lead a normal life, but use common sense when you go out in public,” Dr. Tolcher says. Keep baby out of the sun, and avoid sick people and crowded enclosed spaces . “Teach older siblings to touch baby’s feet instead of her hands and face, which will help prevent the spread of infection,” he adds. And make your older child the hygiene police, says Dr. Jana. He’ll love telling guests, “Don’t touch the baby without washing your hands.”
How Much Sleep Do Babies Need
For babies between 3 and 5 months old, they need 10-12 hours of sleep at night and 3-4 hours during the day, on average. And, babies 6+ months old typically need 10-12 hours of sleep at night and 2-3 hours during the day.
Keep in mind that because these are averages, some babies will naturally fall above this number and some will fall below. Those who fall below average in the amount of sleep they need tend to be more active and observant babies though not always. These schedules are usually the most challenging and it will be harder to follow the textbook schedules out there. If you arent sure if your baby falls above or below the averages, you may want to log your babys sleep for 1-2 weeks. The total amount will stay relatively constant unless you have other sleep problems.

Ner Hospital Bag Checklist
Encourage your partner to pack their own bag of essentials for the birth. While they wont need quite as much as you and the baby, having their own gear on hand can make the time at the hospital much easier. At a minimum, we suggest they pack:
- Change of clothes
- Cell phone charger
- Snacks and water
If your partner plans on staying with you after the birth, theyll need to include a pillow, blanket, eye mask, earplugs, and toiletries in their kit.Sometimes, though, if you live close to the hospital, the nurses will encourage your partner to go home and get a good nights sleep so they can come back fresh in the morning. This is especially common if you plan on breastfeeding your little one.The nurses will be there to help you, so your partner may have nothing to do. Theyre better off recuperating at home so they can support you the next day when you need it the most.Talk to your doctor and the hospital about what they recommend and then your partner can pack their bag accordingly.

Top 10 Things You Need For Baby In The First Two Weeks
Between the gear, the clothing, the toys, the diapers and the MANY other things you will need to do to prepare before having a baby, there are a few essential items that we suggest you have ready for those first weeks at home. You wont need that trendy jogging stroller yet or even a high chair or baby jumper, but there are a few must-haves that you and your baby will not be able to live without. Read on for our master list of the top 10 things you need for baby in the first two weeks.
1) Diapers & Wipes: Whether you choose to cloth diaper or go with disposables, your new little bundle of joy will likely go through approximately 8-10 diapers per day. Most babies will comfortably fit in the newborn size but it doesnt hurt to have some size 1s on hand as well in case your little one is not so little. You will also need a good supply of wipes on deck for the messy ones.
2) Clothes: Youve probably been gifted a number of cute baby outfits and accessories by friends and family but you wont necessarily be reaching for those in the early days. The key to dressing your newborn is making sure that the clothes are comfortable and temperature appropriate. The most handy wardrobe items for the first two weeks are:
- lightweight cotton nightgowns and sleepers
- cotton mittens to prevent scratching
- short sleeve and long sleeve onesies
- newborn cotton caps
- and kimono style button-up t-shirts.
Which Items Are Actually Essential
Its not easy to know which baby items are truly essential and which ones you can ignore. Your baby doesnt need brand-name clothing, but what about a hooded towel or a humidifier? Its not always clear whats absolutely necessary and whats just nice to have.
The truth is that some newborn baby essentials arent exactly essential. Humans have survived for thousands of years without things like breast pumps and pacifiers, so we dont need them in order to take care of our babies.
However, we dont live in the Stone Age anymore, and life in the 21st century requires a few extra items. Diapers, for instance, are impossible to go without. The same is true of bathing products and cleansers.
If youre looking to save money on baby essentials or just prefer a minimalist approach, here is a list of what you will definitely need to care for your baby:
- Baby food
- Cleansers to bathe your baby with
These are, to quote Baloo, the bare necessities of life. But there are a number of other baby essentials that will make caring for your child easier. And making life easier for you and your partner should be a high priority!
So lets get started with the ultimate first year shopping list.

A Portable Changing Pad
All-singing, all-dancing changing stations for the nursery definitely fall into want rather than need, but a portable changing pad is essential if you ever want to leave the house with your baby. Lots of public bathrooms dont have changing stations, and of those that do, not all of them will be as clean as youd like them to be. And sometimes, you just have to change a diaper on the ground or the back seat of your car. Its not fun, its not pretty, but a cute portable changing pad with a compartment for extra diapers and wipes will save you from a complete meltdown.
What Essentials Do You Need For Your Newborn
Having a few essential items on hand for the hospital and when you bring your newborn home will help ease the transition.
Make sure you remove these items from their packaging. Familiarize yourself with the instructions and assemble them, if necessary. This will ensure theyre ready to use as soon as you need them.

Feeding And Burping Your Baby
Whether feeding your newborn by breast or a bottle, you may be stumped as to how often to do so. Generally, it’s recommended that babies be fed on demand whenever they seem hungry. Your baby may cue you by crying, putting fingers in his or her mouth, or making sucking noises.
A newborn baby needs to be fed every 2 to 3 hours. If you’re breastfeeding, give your baby the chance to nurse about 1015 minutes at each breast. If you’re formula-feeding, your baby will most likely take about 23 ounces at each feeding.
Some newborns may need to be awakened every few hours to make sure they get enough to eat. Call your baby’s doctor if you need to wake your newborn often or if your baby doesn’t seem interested in eating or sucking.
If you’re formula-feeding, you can easily monitor if your baby is getting enough to eat, but if you’re breastfeeding, it can be a little trickier. If your baby seems satisfied, produces about six wet diapers and several stools a day, sleeps well, and is gaining weight regularly, then he or she is probably eating enough.
Another good way to tell if your baby is getting milk is to notice if your breasts feel full before feeding your baby and less full after feeding. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your child’s growth or feeding schedule.
If your baby tends to be gassy, has gastroesophageal reflux, or seems fussy during feeding, try burping your little one after every ounce during bottle-feeding or every 5 minutes during breastfeeding.

Because there are just so many baby things to buy before birth but do you REALLY need them all?

Lets be honest, we all overspend on our babies. Its so hard not to and I can tell you there are so many things that you absolutely dont need to buy, at least for the first year of the baby.
I know this because we were on a tight budget at the birth of our first child and we actually bought very limited stuff for her. Believe me, that was enough.
And even though I could buy a lot of stuff for my 2nd baby too, but I preferred to stick to what I bought for my firstborn.
Looking back, now that Ive done the newborn thing twice, I know what really needs to be on the list of things you need for a new baby and what doesnt.
Although I cant save you from overspending, Ive done my best to narrow down the items I think are absolutely essential.

In addition to the detailed checklist mentioned earlier, here are several items you will need for a baby born in summer.
- Baby vests: Bodysuits or vests with popper buttons and envelope necks are ideal summer-wear options. Pick light colours and fabrics to keep the baby cool when the temperatures are soaring high.
Sleepsuits: Newborn babies live in sleepsuits for the first couple of months. Carefully chosen sleepsuits in the right fabric can make the season comfortable for your little one.
Sunshade for the car or pram: This one is ideal for travel. Fix a shade on your babys pram and on your car windows to protect him from heatstroke.
Summer hat: Pick a lightweight hat with a rim to shield your babys eyes from the sun.
Muslin cloths: Most rocking chairs, prams and car seats have synthetic fabric which makes babies sweat. Lining the seats with good quality cotton or muslin sheet will keep your baby cool when he is sitting over it.
