Go into sleep work with an open mind and dont beat yourself up if things dont always go smoothly. For the most part, good habits lead to good sleep, but parents quickly learn to expect the unexpected! The more flexible, open and accepting of this you are, the better. Overcoming The Challenge Of Getting A Baby In The Right Sleep Position
Getting your newborn in the habit of falling asleep on his back may seem near impossible, as many babies seem to fall asleep better on their stomach or side, especially when curled up on a parent’s or caregiver’s chest.
Rest assured, however, that in time your infant will get used to this safe baby sleeping position. Of course, once your child is able to roll over, he may reposition himself.

When to Feed: Your baby’s stomach is a little bigger now, so they’ll stay full for longer, but babies at this age still typically need to be fed every few hours – including throughout the night.

Try some different calming activities out and develop a nighttime routine that helps relax your baby and prepare them for sleep. Having a consistent routine is SO important for healthy sleep.

We get it, falling asleep on the sofa with an infant curled up on your chest is one of the best feelings in the world. Many an exhausted new mom has nodded off for a bit while her sleeping baby is sprawled across her lap or nestled up all warm and cozy on a breastfeeding pillow. But according to the American Academy of Pediatrics , this kind of co-sleepingon a couch or armchairis a serious newborn sleep mistake. Its way more dangerous than co-sleeping in a bed, due to the risk of dropping or smothering the baby. If youre going to nap or sleep with your infant, opt for bed-sharing. Have You Tried A Pacifier

- Feed lying down. At night feeding lying down can help baby remain drowsy, feed, then essentially fall right back to sleep. If you have to pick up a baby, walk to a chair, rock and feed, then put baby back down, there are a lot of opportunities for baby to fully wake up . Feeding lying down helps with this. Then baby can be transferred back to where they will spend the night.

Baby Sleeping On Stomach: What If My Baby Prefers To Sleep That Way
Oh, this is tricky. First off, its important to remember that we are not in the business of dispensing medical advice here at The Baby Sleep Site®, so when it comes to determining the safest sleeping arrangements for your baby, you should absolutely talk to your healthcare provider.
That said wed first advise that you try to get your baby used to laying on his back. While many babies seem to prefer to sleep on their stomachs, a baby can get used to lying on his back, and will eventually grow more comfortable sleeping that way. So try this as a first step: have your baby spend time on his back, during his awake time, and try to start off each nap and bedtime with your baby on his back.
If your baby is still fussing like crazy, then you may want to try swaddling your baby for sleep. Many babies object to back sleeping because they cant curl up tightly into their snug fetal positions, the way they can when theyre on their stomachs. But if you swaddle your baby snugly, you can re-create that cozy, womb-like feel while still placing your child on her back. Just be sure to follow safe swaddling recommendations.
Where Your Baby Should Sleep
Cot death or sudden infant death syndrome is the sudden and unexpected death of a baby who seems healthy during sleep.
It can happen in a cot, pram, bed, car seat, baby seat or anywhere a baby is sleeping.
The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a cot in the same room as you.

Why Experts Recommend Newborns Sleep In Their Parents Room For The First Year

If theres anything parents of newborns are, its sleep-deprived. So getting the news that experts recommend that newborns sleep in the same room as their parents for the first 6-12 months was not exactly great news to those parents who are awakened by every snort and whimper. It also didnt feel like great news to those couples that like a little, well, privacy from time to time.
But heres the thing: keeping your baby in your room can cut the risk of sudden death by 50%, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics .
Every year, about 3,500 babies die of sudden unexplained infant death . Some die from sudden infant death syndrome , some die from accidental strangulation or suffocation, and some die for reasons we never figure out. While there is much we dont know about these deaths, we do know that putting babies on their backs rather than their tummies to sleep makes a difference , as does keeping the crib as bare as possible . And the studies show that when babies sleep in the same room as their parents, it makes a difference too.
Six months to a year can feel like an eternity, but its not. Before you know it, children are grown, doing things like dating and asking for car keys. Not only does that bring a whole new kind of sleep deprivation, it may leave you wistful for the days when they were close to you all the time.
Should The Lights Be On Or Off In The Nursery
- Keep all lights off at night. Unless its your smartphone youre looking at to pass the time, keep all lights off. Itll wake baby up. A night light should give all the light you need to be able to feed or change babys diaper. Turning on overhead lights will wake baby up further. I have heard one exception from my friend Val, and thats when a newborn is wide awake in the dark, that turning on the lights actually forces babys eyes shut, which then helps him drift off. As a general rule, this isnt a great idea, but its worth a shot if youre in a bind.
- Put baby in crib or bassinet to sleep. If baby only sleeps while youre wearing her or holding her, get all your cuddles and snuggles in while shes awake then start transitioning her to her own sleep space. Heres a bedside sleeper which may help, but if not, then just keep at it until baby transitions. If baby is only able to sleep in your arms, this will become increasingly difficult to function throughout the day and, if it becomes a real burden for you, increases your risk of depression.

What Should You Do If Your Baby Won’t Sleep On Their Back
If your baby is old enough to roll over on their own, don’t worry if they flip over during their sleep. Once a baby learns how to roll over, which usually happens when they’re four to six months old, their risk of SIDS decreases significantly. SIDS is more prevalent in babies who are under six months old. However, parents are still encouraged to put their babies to sleep on their backs until they’re one year old, even if they flip over while they sleep.
If your baby is fussy, they may have more trouble falling asleep in general. Keep this in mind, especially if you’re taking medications. Certain medications, such as antibiotics, can cause colic-like symptoms if you’re breastfeeding your baby. This will make it more difficult for them to fall asleep.
Don’t use extra pillows or rolled up blankets to keep your baby on their back. Having extra objects in the crib can increase the risk of SIDS. Instead, offer your baby a pacifier while they’re on their back. It’s usually difficult for babies to keep a pacifier in their mouth when they flip to a different position, so they’ll learn to stay on their backs to keep the pacifier in place.
Should Babies Sleep On Their Back Or Stomach
Sleeping comes naturally to most adults, so it’s easy to underestimate how important it is for your newborn to sleep safely. But creating a safe environment for your baby to sleep in is one of the most crucial things you can do while they’re infants.
Most parents have heard about sudden infant death syndrome . SIDS, also known as crib death, occurs when a baby dies unexpectedly and without explanation before their first birthday. Thinking about SIDS can be very stressful for new parents. Fortunately, one of the most effective ways to prevent SIDS is also very simple.
Putting your baby to sleep on their back carries a much lower risk of SIDS than putting them to sleep on their stomach. In the past, parents were encouraged to put their babies to sleep on their stomach. But as research on SIDS became more common and new discoveries were made, scientists realized that babies who sleep on their stomach have an increased risk of SIDS.
The cause of SIDS is still unknown, as is the reason why back sleeping is safer for babies. Experts have theorized that there are several mechanisms that make stomach sleeping unsafe, including:
- Increased risk of upper airway obstruction
- The baby might re-breathe the air that they’ve already exhaled, which could lead to low oxygen levels and carbon dioxide buildup
- Overheating due to improper body heat dissipation
- Abnormally high blood pressure and heart rate while sleeping

Newborn Sleep: How Much And When
Babies need sleep to grow and develop well. For newborns this is usually 14-17 hours in every 24 hours. But sleep patterns can vary a lot.
Newborns usually sleep in short bursts of 2-3 hours each. Some newborns sleep for up to four hours at a time. Newborns wake frequently to feed because they have tiny tummies. Your newborn might go straight back to sleep after feeding or they might stay awake long enough for a short play.
Some newborns get tired after being awake for 1-1½ hours. Some stay awake and alert longer.
Newborns sleep during the day and night. They dont know that people sleep at night. The parts of their brains that control day-night sleep cycles havent matured yet.
Newborn play might just be a quiet cuddle or some time stretching out and kicking on a blanket. You might find that 10-20 minutes of play is enough for your newborn. You can increase playtime as your baby gets older and stays awake for longer.
Stages Of Sleep In Newborns
The sleep of newborns occurs in four stages:Stage 1: Drowsiness. Your baby becomes drowsy after a period of wakefulness and is ready to fall asleep. Itâs a good idea to put your baby to sleep in her crib when she is drowsy and not yet asleep.
Stage 2: REM or active sleep. Your baby may start to twitch or jerk his arms and legs, and his eyes may move under his eyelids. His breathing may be irregular and stop for 5 to 10 seconds. This is referred to as ânormal periodic breathing of infancy.â His breathing speeds up to a rate of between 50 and 60 breaths per minute, and this rapid pace lasts between 10 and 15 seconds. Then his breathing will return to a regular pace, with the cycle repeating. This type of breathing is completely normal for young babies, and your little one will eventually grow out of it by around 6 months old.
Stage 3: Light sleep. In this stage, your babyâs breathing is regular and sleep is not as active as in the previous stage.
Stage 4 and 5: Deep or non-REM sleep. Also known as quiet sleep, this is the stage your baby falls into a deep sleep. There is no twitching or any other movements. It may be difficult to wake your baby in this stage should you need to for any reason.

What Is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Sudden infant death syndrome is a term used to describe the sudden and unexplained death of a healthy baby. This happens when the child is put down to sleep and found dead later without an obvious cause. SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies between the ages of 1 month and 1 year. The risk of SIDS is higher when a child is between 2 months and 6 months of ages. It is also more common in boys than girls.
Experts dont know why SIDS happens.
Its important to reduce the risk of SIDS by following certain guidelines. These guidelines include:
Encouraging Standard Sleeping Patterns
Here are a few things you can do to encourage regular sleeping patterns:
- During the day, take your kid on a walk to expose them to natural light.
- Create a relaxing nighttime routine that involves taking a bath, getting a massage, and nursing.
- Remove some layers of clothing to make them less warm and more likely to wake up when its time to feed.
- Before switching them to the other breast, try stroking their face with a damp washcloth or lifting them to burp.
- Your kid may become overtired if they receive too much stimulus during the day. Despite being famished, they may fall asleep.
- You could also keep track of their REM sleep stage. This is the stage of light sleep.
- You should be able to wake up your kid more readily during REM sleep than when they are in a deep sleep stage. However, keep in mind that light and deep sleep stages alternate more frequently than in adults in babies.
