Hearing Tests For An Older Child
A hearing evaluation for a child older than age 3 to 4 may include the tests mentioned above, along with these:

How Will My Babys Hearing Be Screened
A newborn undergoes a hearing screening.
Two different tests are used to screen for hearing loss in babies. Your baby can rest or sleep during both tests.
- Otoacoustic emissions tests whether some parts of the ear respond to sound. During this test, a soft earphone is inserted into your babys ear canal. It plays sounds and measures an “echo” response that occurs in ears with normal hearing. If there is no echo, your baby might have hearing loss.
- The auditory brain stem response tests how the auditory nerve and brain stem respond to sound. During this test, your baby wears small earphones and has electrodes painlessly placed on his or her head. The electrodes adhere and come off like stickers and should not cause discomfort.

What Is Newborn Hearing Screening
Most babies are born with normal hearing and experience the beauty of sound from the beginning but 1-3 out of 1000 are born with hearing loss. Those children cannot properly hear their parents speak, sing or read to them which delays speech and language learning. Newborn hearing screening identifies babies at risk for hearing loss so they can be evaluated and treated early.

What Do The Results Mean
If the hearing screening shows a clear response from both of your babys ears, its unlikely that your baby has hearing loss.
Some babies need to have a second test to achieve a clear result. A refer result requires the hearing screen to be repeated within a few weeks. It doesnt necessarily mean that your baby has a hearing problem.
The initial screen result can be affected by:
- fluid or other substances that have got into the ear canal during birth
- temporary middle ear fluid
- the area where the screen takes place is too noisy, or your baby is too restless
It is very hard to tell how well a young baby can hear by watching their behaviour so it is important that the hearing screen is repeated.
If your baby doesnt pass the second hearing test, they will be referred to a paediatric audiologist to test if they have a hearing problem.
The audiologist will see your baby as soon as possible if they do not pass the follow-up hearing screen in both ears. If your baby passes the hearing screen in only 1 ear, the audiologist will see your baby at about 2 to 3 months of age, or sooner if possible.
The audiologist will do a full hearing assessment. If there is a hearing problem, the tests will also show whether it’s likely to be temporary or permanent and your child will receive appropriate treatment and support.

Is Nbs The Same For All Babies In The Us

Where Does Nbs Happen
All babies need NBS, regardless of where they are born.
If your baby is born at a hospital, screening will happen before you take your baby home. Usually, a health care provider performs NBS in your room or a newborn/nursery area.
If your baby has an out-of-hospital birth, screening can happen outside of the hospital like at your birth center or home. Many midwives are trained to complete NBS.
If you are planning an out-of-hospital birth, talk to your midwife about NBS before your baby is born. If your midwife cannot perform NBS, make other arrangements. Your babys health care provider can help arrange screening by another midwife, a hospital, clinic, or local health department. It is important that you make a plan so your baby completes screening near the recommended age.

If My Baby Passes The Screening Do I Need To Have His/her Hearing Tested Again
Although the screening is very precise, it does not test every pitch or sound. Also, if there are other factors that place your baby at a higher than normal risk for hearing loss, you will be asked to return for further testing when your baby is six months old. The nurse from Public Health will visit you and your baby in the hospital to see if any of these risks are present. For example, a history of hearing loss in the family is a risk factor. If your baby does not have these risk factors and passes the screening, no follow-up testing is necessary.
What Are Some Signs That A Child Has A Hearing Problem
Without newborn hearing screening and special tests, the signs of hearing loss can be very hard to find. Sometimes babies and children seem very alert, so you think they can hear you well, but they are actually using their other senses to know what is going on around them. Or, as they get older, they learn to read your lips on their own.

Interpretation Of The Test Result
Hearing is measured in Decibels Hearing Level . For an OAE test, the range of 30 Db HL is considered the upper limit. If a newborn fares more than 30 Db HL, it is assumed that some hearing loss is present.
An AABR is a screening test and does not evaluate the degree of hearing loss in a child. It has a pass/fail approach where the computer sensor gives out one of the two results based on its calculations.

Hearing Tests For A Newborn Baby
There are 2 main types of hearing screening methods for newborns. These may be used alone or together:

Evoked otoacoustic emissions . A test that uses a tiny, flexible plug that is put into the babys ear. Sounds are sent through the plug. A microphone in the plug records the otoacoustic responses of the normal ear in reaction to the sounds. There are no emissions in a baby with hearing loss. This test is painless and it often takes just a few minutes. It is done while the baby sleeps.

Auditory brainstem response . A test that uses wires attached with adhesive to the babys scalp. While the baby sleeps, clicking sounds are made through tiny earphones in the babys ears. The test measures the brains activity in response to the sounds. As in EOAE, this test is painless and takes only a few minutes.
If the screening tests finds that your child has a hearing loss, more testing is needed. Babies with hearing loss should be identified by age 3 months. Then treatment can begin before the baby is 6 months old, an important time for speech and language development.
How To Prepare For Your Babys Hearing Screen
To prepare your baby for the hearing screen:
- avoid putting lotion on your babys head on the day of the screen
- feed your baby just before the appointment
- bring your baby sleeping or resting quietly in a car seat
