Why Choose Cloth Diapers For Babies

How Many Diapers Will Your Newborn Need

Many new parents also prefer cloth diapers more than disposable ones as they are not only cost-effective but also environmental-friendly.

You also wont have to worry about stocking up so many pieces as your baby grows for there are cloth diapers that can adjust to your little ones size from newborn and to the rest of the year.

While it was suggested earlier that you have at least 20 pairs of cloth diapers, it really depends on how much you are willing to wash every now and then. But it still wouldnt hurt to have enough in your storage space at home.

Hopefully now you know how many diapers in the first year your baby would need. We would also recommend consulting with your doctor to check on your babys growth spurts to be on the ball with this crucial purchase.

What About Diapering Emergencies

Murphys law says anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Boy, is that true even with cloth diapers. Maybe youre sick and stuck in bed, or the pipes freeze. Maybe the electricity goes out, or we go on vacation and forget to wash diapers beforehand.

The point is emergencies happen, and when they do, you might not be able to wash your diapers on your normal schedule. The best way to beat Murphy is to plan ahead.

This doesnt mean doubling your stash, but keeping an extra days worth of diapers on hand isnt a bad idea.

Speaking from personal experience here, it can be a lot less stressful to have extras diapers around. That way youre not loading up the kids and going to the store in search of emergency disposables.

Diapers Around The House

I like to set up diaper stations around the house. I got the brilliant idea from a neighbor who has 8 children and she set up a changing/diaper station in her kitchen. It was a separate part of the kitchen away from the food, but it was a place she ALWAYS was and she had it set up to take care of a diaper quickly with a changing pad and all the things you would need to change a diaper.

When my babies are newborns I set up a changing station right next to my bed so I can change their diapers without having to get out of bed. My favorite type of bed to use for a baby is a pack n play with a changing table attached so I can sleep and change the baby right next to my bed.

As part of any changing station, you need to check out the Diaper Genieto contain any stinky smells coming from soiled diapers.

Diaper Size To Weight

Luckily, babies certainly do follow averages some of the time. Once your little one is on the scale, which will happen at every wellness check, youll have a better idea of how soon youll need to start stocking up on that next size up.

As I mentioned earlier, Im looking at it through the lens of median averages and in the same manner that your doctor will read out on babys weight.

This is called the percentile, which compares your baby at any given time to the averages of other babies at the same age.

Heres what age to weight looks like at the median , according to the CDC:

Unlike disposable diapers, cloth diapers can be washed and reused as long as they provide a comfortable fit for the baby. Many are also adjustable, so they continue to fit even as the baby grows. To be on the safe side, always keep one or two dozen reusable diapers on hand. You may need to purchase more if the current ones wear thin or no longer fit.

How To Calculate Your Exact Number Of Cloth Diapers

If this isnt your first baby, or if youre baby is a bit older and youre aware of their toileting habits, you can nail down the exact quantity of cloth diapers you need by using the chart below.

To get the number of cloth diapers youll need, youll first need the number of diapers your baby will go through in one day. If you already know roughly how many times your baby wets and soils their diapers, just use that number. If you have no idea, here are some rough estimates to use:

  • Newborn : 12-14 diapers a day
  • Infant : 10-12 diapers a day
  • Baby : 8-10 diapers a day
  • Toddler : 6-8 diapers a day

Next, youll multiply that number by the number of days you plan to have between washing your diapers. For example, if you plan on washing your diapers every other day, youd multiply by two. If you plan to wash every three days or so, multiply by three, and so on.

Finally, if you have multiple children, you then add the numbers for each of your babies together.

Dont worry, you dont have to remember all of this, I created a handy-dandy cloth diaper calculator cheat sheet for you here:

Consider Diaper Booster Pads

While many diaper brands do not begin offering overnight diapers until size 3, you can purchase overnight diaper booster pads to place inside your childs diaper if theyre sleeping long chunks of time and peeing through their diaper before they wake and arent yet ready for size 3.

That way you wont have to decide between the equally awful choices of waking a sleeping baby to change their diaper or washing piles of urine soaked pajamas and bedding!

Cloth Diapering a Newborn – How Hard Is It REALLY? BEST CLOTH DIAPERS FOR NEWBORNS

As explained, your baby will go through between 2,000 and 3,000 diapers during their first year. This number does drop as they go into their second year, but you will still need a substantial supply!

For the second year, you can expect your baby to go through 1,500 to 1,800 diapers. This drop is due to a few factors. They are possibly sleeping through the night now, so you will not have to change them when you wake up for a feed. After the first year, you will only need to change them around 5 times a day.

You will also need to use fewer diapers as your little one starts potty training.

To help you plan ahead of time, here is how many diapers you can expect to go through in the second and third years. Each baby is different, so this is only a rough guide to follow!

How often you wash is also something you need to consider when deciding how many cloth diapers you need.

I know from experience you dont want to be washing cloth diapers every day trust me. Washing your diapers every 2-3 days is whats generally recommended, to avoid issues like ammonia, mold, and mildew . Some people choose to wash their diapers once a week.

When you decide how often you plan to wash diapers, multiply your daily diaper amount by the number of days between washes to get a rough idea of how many diapers youll need. Then add one extra days worth of diapers, so youll have diapers for the day youre doing your washing.

How Long Do Newborn Diapers Last

The average baby weighs about 7.5 pounds at birth, according to WhatToExpect.com. And that baby will grow quickly in the first four months.

According to Ask Dr. Sears, a breast-fed baby will gain 4-7 oz a week during the first month, and an average of 1-2 lbs per month for the first six months.

That article also referenced a 1992 study, titled the DARLING study, which showed that breastfed and formula-fed infants grow at basically the same rate in the first few months .

Using those numbers, which are an average starting weight of 7.5 lbs and an average weight gain of 1.5 lbs per month, we can estimate how long those newborn cloth diapers would last the average newborn.

So how long to newborn cloth diapers last? If we consider the newborn diapers above to be a good sampling of whats available , we can see that the average newborn cloth diaper will last the average baby about 4.3 months.

Wait So How Many Newborn Diapers Will I Need

Ok, so we know that newborn diapers will only last for about 4.3 months and that youll be changing them about 12 times per day, but how many newborn diapers do you need? I recommend 12-14 diapers per day because things happen and sometimes baby will pee immediately after changing, have an upset tummy and poop a few extra times, and so on.

Its always best to have at least one or two backups so youre not scrambling to the washer, usually at the worst times .

As you can see by looking at the diaper calculator cheat sheet , youre going to multiply that number by the number of days you go between washes. Youll also need a few for when youre washing and drying.

Flats Prefolds And All

If youre using flats, prefolds, or All-in-Twos, youll change the absorbent part of the diaper but wont need a new cover or diaper fastener for every change.

For flats and prefolds youll actually only need 2-3 diaper fasteners and about 4 diaper covers per day for a newborn. Thats because covers and diaper fasteners only need to be changed out if babys mess gets on them or urine soaks through them.

All-in-twos are similar because the absorbent insert snaps into the cover, but theres no layer between the insert and your babys bottom. If baby only urinates, and the diaper doesnt leak, you dont need a new cover at every diaper change you only need to swap out the insert!

A Short Primer On Diapers

Diaper sizes are based on weight. Disposable diapers often contain sodium polyacrylate , a compound that is used in a number of ways. Sodium polyacrylate is utilized as a food thickening agent as well as in the manufacturing of baby diapers. In the latter, sodium polyacrylate comes in contact with urine and turns it into a gel. This superabsorbent polymer keeps babies dry .

Gender can play a part in how many diapers are required. Boys tend to weigh about 10 pounds by 4 weeks old, while girls of average weight will be around 10 pounds at 6 weeks old. Typically, boys have more accidents on the changing table. Consider putting a wipe or cloth over your little boy when changing them .

There is a common misconception that the size of the diaper is referring to the age of babies. This is not so. When you buy diapers, keep in mind that the size refers to the weight of the baby.
