The AAP advises that parents follow the safe sleep guidelines for their babys first year of life, or for about their first 12 months. After that, you will want to take care to make sure that your childs environment continues to be safe, though.

Make sure that the blankets you give your toddler are breathable and small enough so that they cant be easily tangled. Blankets with any loose string or decorative ribbons are not advised. Weighted blankets are not appropriate for toddlers.

But the risks of bed-sharing can outweigh the benefits.

Helping Babies Sleep And Settle In The Early Months

In the first six months of life, babies need to wake at night to get enough food for growth and development. For most babies, sleeping through the night and settling by themselves comes later, when theyre developmentally ready.

But there are three things you can do in the early months to help with baby sleep and settling:

  • Emphasise the difference between night and day.

Safe sleeping practices can help you minimise the risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy . These practices include sleeping your baby on their back, making sure your babys head is uncovered during sleep, and sharing a room with your baby for the first year of life, or at least for the first six months.

How To Establish An Older Babys Routine

Once your baby is 4- to 6-months old, its time to start thinking about creating a distinct routine for days and nights. Consistency is the key to a successful routine: whether its naptime or bedtime, put your baby down in the same spot and signal that its sleep time by going through set motions, such as pulling down the blinds and dimming lights, turning off electronics, and playing soothing white noise or lullabies.

It’s also unlikely to fit in with your need for sleep. Try to sleep when your baby sleeps. If you’re breastfeeding, in the early weeks your baby is likely to doze off for short periods during a feed. Carry on feeding until you think your baby has finished or until they’re fully asleep. This is a good opportunity to try to get a bit of rest yourself.

If you’re not sleeping at the same time as your baby, don’t worry about keeping the house silent while they sleep. It’s good to get your baby used to sleeping through a certain amount of noise.

Eat Well And Drink Lots Of Fluids

You may feel hungrier than usual if youre tired, plus you may not have a lot of time to think about what to eat. You may find yourself getting caught out and making unhealthy food choices.

When you can, try to eat a healthy, balanced diet, which will help keep your energy levels up. Dont skip breakfast and try to eat at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables a day.

Try to avoid sugary foods such as sweets, cakes and biscuits. This will give you a rush of energy, but itll wear off quickly.

Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, water ideally. . An occasional cup of coffee may help, but dont rely on caffeine energy drinks to pick you up. They can boost your energy temporarily but can disrupt your sleep patterns even further in the long term.

Look Out For Tired Signs

Babies will show signs when they are getting tired such as grimacing, yawning, grizzling, frowning, sucking, staring, snuggling in, jerky movements, becoming over active, clenching fists, rubbing eyes, fussiness or crying. Remove your hands gradually first one and then the other easing the pressure slowly so as not to startle baby awake. Sometimes fathers, perhaps because they have larger hands, are more successful in this hands-on ritual.

Its important for babies to get used to fathers way of comforting and being put to sleep in fathers arms, otherwise, mothers burn out. A fathers participation in nighttime parenting is especially important for the breastfeeding infant who assumes the luxury that moms diner is open all night.

There is no single, specific sleep schedule 3-month-old babies should follow. Instead, like newborns, most 3-month-old infants should sleep multiple times day and night, for a total sleep time of between 16 and 17 hours per 24-hour period.
