Baby Sleep Patterns By Age

4-minute read

Babies have different sleep patterns. Some take long day naps while others only have quick naps. Some wake up frequently through the night while others may sleep through or wake up occasionally. Their sleep patterns can also change a lot in the first year. While each baby is different, it may help you to understand how babies’ sleep cycles differ from those of adults and also what to expect at each stage.

Why Wont My Newborn Sleep

Youd think that if your babys averaging 16 hours of sleep each day you should feel rested and relaxed with plenty of time to knock all those tasks off of your to-do list, right? Think again. While your newborns total hours of sleep may clock in fairly high, the reality is that sleep is unpredictable and inconsistent.

Babies are born without a well-developed circadian rhythm and the circadian rhythm is why we have a consolidated night and day. Without it youre basically napping round the clock, explains Alexis Dubief, baby sleep expert and author of Precious Little Sleep.

This explains why your newborn wont just wake up to eat and then fall right back to sleep instead, theyre often awake at night for long periods of time, sometimes even a few times each night.

The circadian rhythm is also an important component of why we have consistent and predictable bedtimes. Without this bedtime is often a total mystery, says Dubief. One night theyre out like a light at 8 p.m. The next night theyre wide awake at eight, take a 30-minute nap at nine then are back up till midnight. Its a really challenging and uncomfortable time because its hard not knowing what to expect one night to the next.

The newborn period is also a time of rapid growth, and your newborn is wired to wake frequently to eat. And there are sleep cycles to consider.

Establish A Bedtime Routine

When your baby is between 2 and 3 months old, it’s time to introduce a bedtime routine, Dr. Traeger says. Sticking to a consistent schedule of eventssuch as a bath, feeding, reading a book, then bedwill signal to your baby that it’s time to go to sleep.

“Even though the baby’s internal clock really doesn’t kick in until about 4 months, it’s a good idea to set a routine now for when that does happen. And this evening practice of relaxing and preparing for bed can really last your child a lifetime,” says Dr. Traeger.

An effective bedtime routine can include anything, including snuggling and rocking. The objective here is to teach your baby to recognize and understand the cues for bedtime and to learn that after certain rituals, it is time to go to sleep.

How Does Breastfeeding Affect Safe Sleep

How much sleep do babies and toddlers need?

Breastfeeding for at least the first 6 of your babys life can reduce your babys risk of SIDS.

Its OK to breastfeed your baby in your bed. Before you start feeding, move any bedding and pillows from your bed in case you fall asleep. If you do fall asleep, move your baby to his crib or bassinet as soon as you wake up. Breastfeeding your baby in bed is safer than on a sofa or cushioned chair.

Babies often fall asleep while breastfeeding, especially when they get full. If you think your babys asleep and hasnt finished feeding, try to wake him gently by rubbing his back, tickling his feet, burping him or switching him to the other breast. If your babys not latched on correctly, he may fall asleep. You can break the latch by putting your pinky finger in the side of his mouth. Ask your lactation consultant to help you make sure your baby has a good latch. Latch is when your babys mouth is securely attached to the area around your nipple for breastfeeding.

Sleep Between One And Three Months

As your baby becomes more wakeful during the day, their sleep pattern may change. They might start having longer sleeps at night maybe even around four to five hours.

Most babies still need night feeds, and help to settle back to sleep.

If your baby was premature, or had a low birth weight, your doctor might recommend you only let your baby sleep for a certain amount of time before waking them for feeds.

What Should A Newborn Sleep In

We recommend newborns sleep in the SNOO baby bassinet. The SNOO keeps the baby swaddled and secure in a sleep sack, while rocking them at various speeds, and using soft white noise to calm and help your baby sleep. You can learn more about the SNOO here.

When Does Newborn Sleep Improve

Knowing why your newborn doesnt sleep in long, predictable stretches can help you feel a little more prepared as a new parent. And while when youre in the moment it feels as if you may never sleep again, the good news is that it only takes a few months for your babys sleep to start falling into place.

On average, it takes about two months for the circadian rhythm to click in, says Dubief. That doesnt mean its utter chaos for two months and then a light switch flips things are gradually improving and becoming less mysterious over those two months.

So what does that mean for your babys sleep patterns? According to Dubief, you may start to notice:

  • Your baby is both consolidating their sleep and staying asleep for longer stretches.
  • Long night gaps of awake time start closing.
  • Bedtime starts becoming more predictable.

By two months, you should have a kiddo with a reasonably knowable bedtime and, if they wake multiple times at night, those wakes should be fairly brief , she says.

Why Do Newborns Sleep So Much

How much sleep is normal for a 3 month old baby to get each day?

Turns out newborns are wired to sleep a lot during the fourth trimesterthe first 12 weeks after theyre bornas its a time for major growth and development.

Humans develop less in utero compared to other mammals, meaning that when a baby is born they still have a lot of growing and developing to do, explains Dr. Diamond.

This makes for a newborn period that looks a lot like life looked in the womb, and means babies need a ton of sleep to keep getting larger, stronger and making brain connections.

Putting It All Together

Your newborn baby cycles through his two sleep stages for 16 to 20 hours per day in small chunks. Those chunks arent consecutive or nearly as long as adults need to feel rejuvenated and rested. So, parents need to find ways to get more sleep to avoid sleep deprivation.

Using sleep aids, like swaddling and white noise, can help to lengthen the time between wake ups. Every minute counts! Start creating a sleeping routine to help your babys brain learn to signal its bedtime and start winding down.

In the weeks following your babys birth, make sure you take it easy and avoid too many visitors. Spend as much time as possible resting and napping, when possible. Head to bed earlier and take advantage of every second possible to maximize your sleeping time.

How Can You Help Your Baby Fall Asleep

Not all babies know how to put themselves to sleep. When it’s time for bed, many parents want to rock their baby to sleep. Newborns and younger infants will fall asleep while breastfeeding. Having a routine at bedtime is a good idea. But if an older baby falls asleep while eating or in your arms, this may become a pattern. Your baby may then start to expect to be in your arms to fall asleep. When your baby briefly awakens during a sleep cycle, he or she may not be able to go back to sleep on his or her own.

After the newborn period, most experts recommend allowing your baby to become sleepy in your arms, then placing him or her in the bed while still awake. This way your baby learns how to go to sleep on his or her own. Playing soft music while your baby is getting sleepy is also a good way to help create a bedtime routine.

How Can I Get My Baby Used To Night And Day

It’s a good idea to teach your baby that night-time is different from daytime from the start. During the day, open curtains, play games and don’t worry too much about everyday noises when they sleep.

At night, you might find it helpful to:

    • keep the lights down low
    • not talk much and keep your voice quiet
    • put your baby down as soon as they’ve been fed and changed
    • not change your baby unless they need it
    • not play with your baby

Your baby will gradually learn that night-time is for sleeping.

When To Wake A Baby For Feeding

4 More Helpful Printable Parenting Charts

Newborns often cluster-feed, which means that they may eat several times over the course of 12 hours or nurse for an extended period. Most newborns should eat every 23 hours or more if a pediatrician recommends so or if the baby is not gaining enough weight.

Feeding a newborn whenever they show hunger cues such as rooting, sucking, or sticking out their tongue is the best way to ensure that they get enough food.

It is not necessary to wake most older newborns up to eat. However, those younger than 1 month old or so may not wake up when they feel hungry. Babies younger than 4 weeks old should not go longer than 45 hours without food.

To wake a baby up to eat, try brushing the side of their cheek. This can trigger the rooting reflex. Most babies dislike having their feet stroked. So, if stroking the cheek does not work, try gently wiggling the babys toes or gently stroking the bottoms of their feet.

Food needs vary from baby to baby. Parents and caregivers should consult a pediatrician or nursing expert, who can offer individual advice based on the needs and development of the baby.

    How Does Your Baby Compare

    The Baby Tracker

When it comes to sleeping habits, all babies are different. Even twins are different. You might look at the table above and think that your baby is way off from where he or she should be. Or, you might not know after a few weeks of sleep-deprived nights, everything starts to run together. Thats why I recommend keeping track of your babys eating and sleeping patterns in a log book like the one to the right , at least for the first several months. Not only will it give you an accurate record of your newborns habits as they change, but it will also make a nice keepsake for a time in your life when, lets be honest, the memories might be a little bit fuzzy.

    Newborn Growth: What To Expect

After an initial post-birth drop in weight, expect your newborn to settle into a feeding routine. Theyll gain back the weight, and most babies grow steadily from then onward.

You can monitor your babys growth progress by keeping track of their feedings and dirty diapers. Your pediatrician will also weigh them at each checkup.

Over 24 hours, most babies need approximately 25 ounces of breast milk. That volume will stay fairly constant for the first six months of life, except during growth spurts. You should see your babys weight increase, while the number of feedings per day will decrease. Theyll get stronger, and their stomach will get bigger.

Formula-fed babies have a slower rate of feeding than breast-fed babies. They stay full longer, so theyll feed less often.

    How Long Do Newborns Sleep

How many hours of sleep do you need?

Congratulations! Youve brought your new little one home! You might have already noticed that your newborn sleeps most of the time: usually around 14 to 17 hours in a 24-hour period.

In the first 6 months of life, your baby will almost double their size and weight. All this hard work means they need plenty of sleep and food.

But even though babies sleep a lot, parents and caregivers are still exhausted.

Your baby will probably interrupt your sleep every hour or so for a meal or a diaper change. Some babies also prefer being more active and playful at night than during the day.

Babies normally wake up ravenous for a feed every few hours. Even if they dont wake up on their own, youll have to wake them up to eat every 23 hours until theyre above their birth weight.

New little ones have stomachs the size of an acorn. This means they get full quickly, but must feed every 1 to 3 hours even if this means summoning you from sleep in the middle of the night!

    Developing Good Sleep Habits

Developing good sleep habits in a newborn requires consistency and love. Newborns can wake frequently, and their sleep patterns are not yet set in stone. In fact, a baby can wake several times during the night without your intervention. Sleep deprivation can cause an extra-cranky child who is likely to cry at bedtime. Developing good sleep habits in a newborn will ease any adjustment to the new routine and serve your child for a lifetime.

The goal of sleep training a newborn is to have him or her sleep through the night by the time they are a couple of months old. Once the baby has reached this milestone, their sleep patterns will be similar to those of an adult. This will mean a more consistent schedule for the parents, and a less chaotic one for the baby. Even though the first two months of life are the most critical for establishing a babys sleep pattern, you can encourage good sleep habits in your newborn as early as six weeks old.

Once your baby is three months old, his or her sleep patterns will be much more predictable. Your newborn will usually let you know when he or she needs a nap. Start a sleep diary to learn when he or she is tired. During naptime, prepare a quiet cuddle or a story in the dark. Babies dont sleep well when they are overtired, so a naptime routine is crucial to the babys health.

Week Old Sleep Schedule / 1 Month Old Sleep Schedule Development And Sleep Patterns

Your newborns sleep patterns: At 4 weeks old / 1 month old, your newborn baby will still need ~14-16 hours of sleep per day and will likely begin staying awake a bit more during the day. Sleep schedules are still relatively loose and vary day-to-day though some babies are getting into more predictable sleep patterns.

Thankfully, some 4 week old newborns start to have one or two longer stretches of sleep at night. Talk to your babys doctor or healthcare provider to make sure you no longer need to wake your baby to feed. If your baby is gaining weight well, your doctor may allow him or her to sleep in longer stretches during the day and at night and it will be glorious! Breastfed babies sometimes feed more frequently than formula-fed babies at this age. For example, my son was breastfed and couldnt go longer than 2 to 2 1/2 hours during the day before he needed to eat again while some formula-fed babies start to go 3 hours between feedings. Also, cluster feeding and evening fussiness may become more common around this age. Here is a common 4 week old/1 month old sleep pattern and schedule:

4 Week Old / 1 Month Old Sleep Schedule
    Time
5:00 AM Milk and Diaper Change

As you can see, you may have one fewer night feeding and longer stretches of sleep
