Take some time to work out which kind of newborn photoshoot your client is after. You have two different types of newborn photos: posed and lifestyle.
So, whatâs the difference between these newborn baby photoshoot types?
The Type Of Service The Photographer Provides
Finally, the type of service that a photographer provides will also have an impact on their costs and how much you pay.
At one end of the scale, you may find a photographer who will meet you for the shoot, take the photographs, do minimal post processing and email a set of digital images to you.
At the other end of the scale you can work with photographers who will get to know each of their clients, find out what it is that each client is hoping for from the session, offer a great session experience, meet you in person to show you the photographs, help you choose and design the best ways to display or enjoy your photographs, create albums, prints or wall displays for you, and deliver your new photographs to your door.
Youll also find lots of variations in-between.
The first photographer I described will obviously spend less time working on your shoot, than the second one and hence has the capacity to work with more clients in the same time-frame. The second photographer provides a more bespoke service, and is likely to work with fewer clients. Its likely that a newborn photo shoot with them will cost more, as their cost of providing it to you will be higher.

What Kind Of Service Would You Like To Have
In every industry youll find professionals providing different levels of service take restaurants for example. At one end of the scale you have fast food chains for fairly low prices you queue for your food, clear your own table, and have very little personalisation of service. Contrast that with a restaurant where lunch would cost you hundreds of pounds, and youd expect highly personalised service, knowledgeable staff who can make suggestions or advise you on the best choices, and who anticipate your needs.

Our recommendation is to wait until the newborn is nice and sleepy. This allows you to pose and photograph in freedom.
You will find this is easier when the newborn is only a few days old. Whereas a week old newborn can take up to an hour to fall asleep.

There is probably no other time in life when this consideration is as important, as when you have just had a baby. Would you prefer that you dont have to travel, and can have the photographer come to your home to do the shoot? Or, is it more appealing to you to go to a studio to have the shoot done there?
The answer will be very personal to you. Some families prefer not to have to leave the house and travel to the session. Others dont want the worry of having to tidy up, make space, and have the clutter of daily life around them whilst they have a shoot.
So how does this affect the price? Well, depending on the size and location of their studio, a photographer with a studio may have higher running costs than someone who travels to you. However, if their studio is in their home, or isnt substantial in size their costs may be lower.
Equally, if a photographer travels long distances to reach their clients home their costs may be no lower than a photographer with a studio.

It doesnt always go how I envision, but having a clear plan in my brain helps me to keep things organized so I can get through the session easier.

Similarly to other industries, you can find photographers providing newborn photography at many different levels. From a photographer who enjoys taking photographs as a hobby, but is not running a full-time business, to a photographer who has many years experience of exclusively photographing newborns, and provides a comprehensive service that includes helping you design albums or wall art after the shoot.
Here are some of the ways that their costs of doing business, and hence the prices you pay may vary:

How To Include Siblings In The Newborn Shoot
Often, newborn sessions will include siblings. If this is the case, ask your client to bring an extra person to the session. It could be the grandmother, a friend, or an aunt.
Their role will be to whisk the children away when their turn is over. This will help the parents relax for the rest of the session.
When including siblings, make sure to photograph them first. Photograph the siblings with the newborn and siblings with the whole family. If you have time and they are willing, get a solid portrait of the siblings on their own.Once you have checked these photos off, have them leave the room. That way you can focus your attention and time to the newborn.This will give you fewer distractions. And you can avoid mishaps or accidents while handling the newborn baby.Older children tend to get bored or tired. Start the session with them. This will make the portrait session go much smoother and quicker.
A Couple More Very Helpful Tools
Ive also found that warming the spot on the beanbag where they will be posed is incredibly helpful too, particularly on the first blanket Im working with. A heating pad works great for this!
To sooth the baby while posing, I have found that a very loud SHHHHHH goes a long way! I hold my warm hands firmly on their body, often one on their head and the other on their tush, and say SHHHHH in their ear.

Can I Do My Own Newborn Photography At Home
With a camera, the equipment listed above, and a few choice props, you can take some basic newborn photos at home. It’s important to keep it simple with the poses if you are new to newborn photography, as some of them can be tricky at first, and you don’t want to hurt the baby at all.
Hiring a pro is a good choice if you want a really professional finish or more advanced poses. They may also have equipment that produces larger image files, which are helpful if you’re planning to print those photos on a large scale.
