If, by the time your little one is 12 month, they dont respond to their name, it may not just be because they are ignoring you. They may not actually hear you. This is the way a lot of parents learn that their child has a hearing impairment. They assume their child is just ignoring them when they actually cant hear them. If a hearing impairment has not been detected in infancy, when they are older communicate with them and ask them what they can hear.
So How Best To Know When It’s Time To Pee

How To Check Your Unborn Babys Heart Rate At Home
A positive pregnancy test will probably tell you that you are pregnant, but the first time you hear the galloping heartbeats of your baby during your ultrasound is when the reality of new life forming in your belly actually sinks in. A babys heart typically begins to beat around 5th-6th week of the pregnancy. This is about 2 weeks after you have missed your period or 6 weeks from your last period. An early ultrasound can detect this fetal heartbeat around 7thor 8thweek.
What is a normal fetal heart rate?
The average fetal heart rate from week 10 until full term is between 120 and 160 beats per minute. This is about twice the rate of a normal adults resting heart rate! Your babys normal fetal heart rate will also vary naturally, just as your heart rate does. Your babys movement, sleeping and other activities can cause the heart rate to go up or down.
Why is it important to check Fetal Heart Rate during prenatal checkups?
The fetal heart rate is the first checkpoint for the Doctor at each prenatal appointment to assess fetal well being and identify any changes that might be associated with problems during pregnancy. FHR is generally checked at prenatal appointments for all pregnancies, however, its monitoring is especially helpful for high-risk pregnancy conditions such as the ones where the mother has high blood sugar, high blood pressure, late maternal age or there are problems with fetal growth.

Parent Options During Screening
States give parents options during NBS. Examples of choices that differ by state include the following:
- Whether and how to refuse NBSAll states require NBS, but most states let parents refuse screening for their baby. Accepted reasons for refusal depend on the laws in a state. For example, some states only let parents refuse NBS for religious reasons. Other states let parents refuse for any reason. A couple of states do not allow parents to refuse NBS at all.
- What happens with your newborns blood spots after NBSSome states give parents choices about what happens to their babys dried blood spots after screening is complete. For example, some states let parents choose whether the blood sample is stored, destroyed, or used for research studies.

Newborns Notice How We Touch Them And They Get Stressed When We Do It The Wrong Way
In an experiment on newborns, researchers randomly assigned infants to one of two treatments. Half the babies were stroked by a silent, uncommunicative caregiver. The other half were also stroked, but in combination with rocking, eye contact, and soothing speech.
The babies who received the combination package experienced a drop in stress hormone levels. The babies who were stroked in isolation experienced a stress hormone surge .
And babies can also get stressed when were too pushy when we ignore their desire for downtime, touching and stimulating them in ways they dont want . So the key is to pay attention to your babys signals, and provide him with the sort of touching that he finds enjoyable or soothing.

Even though every state in the U.S. requires NBS, each state manages its own NBS program. This means that NBS can be a little different in each state.
For example, some states may give parents different options during screening, have different NBS costs, or look for different conditions during screening. It is important to be familiar with how NBS works in your state.

When To Worry About Your Newborns Hearing
Babies, when awake, startle to sudden loud bangs or sounds. The following are a few signs that may indicate a hearing problem .
- Not being startled by loud sounds
- Not reacting and turning to a sound even after six months of age
- Looking at you only when they see you and not when they hear you
- Seems to be alerted by some sounds but not by others
These issues do not always confirm a hearing problem. Babies might show a temporary diminished hearing during ear infections or an episode of cold and cough. They may also show no reaction when they are engrossed playing with an adult or a sibling. Therefore, do not panic but consult a doctor before arriving at a conclusion.

What Should I Do If My Babys Hearing Screening Reveals Potential Hearing Loss
If the results show that your baby may have hearing loss, make an appointment with a pediatric audiologista hearing expert who specializes in the assessment and management of children with hearing loss. This follow-up exam should be done as soon as possible, ideally by the time the baby is 2 to 3 months old. The audiologist will conduct tests to determine whether your baby has a hearing problem and, if so, the type and extent of that problem.
If you need help finding a pediatric audiologist, ask your pediatrician or the hospital staff who conducted your babys screening. They may even be able to help you schedule an appointment. You can also try the directories provided by the American Academy of Audiology or the American SpeechLanguageHearing Association. If the follow-up examination confirms that your baby has hearing loss, he or she should begin receiving intervention services as soon as possible, ideally by the age of 3 to 6 months. The pediatric audiologist may recommend that your baby visit a pediatric ear, nose, and throat physician who specializes in conditions affecting the ear, known as a pediatric otologist. A pediatric otologist can determine possible causes of hearing loss and recommend intervention options. If your child has siblings, the audiologist or otologist may also recommend that their hearing be tested.
What Does The Screening Involve
A trained hearing screener carries out the hearing screening test. Two main tests are done to screen a newborn:
ABR The tester attaches leads to your baby’s forehead, back of their neck and behind their shoulder, using sticky pads. Small earphone ‘cups’ are then placed over the baby’s ears. The earphones make soft clicking sounds and the leads measure the response from your baby’s ears.
OAE A small soft-tipped earpiece is placed in the outer part of your baby’s ear, which sends clicking sounds down the ear. When an ear receives sound, the inner part, known as the cochlea, usually produces an echo. The screening equipment can pick up a response.
These tests only take a few minutes and do not hurt your baby. The hearing screening test will usually be done while your baby is asleep or settled. You can stay with your baby while the screening test is done.

At birth, babies cant see as well as older children or adults. Their eyes and visual system arent fully developed. But significant improvement occurs during the first few months of life. The following are some milestones to watch for in vision and child development. It is important to remember that not every child is the same and some may reach certain milestones at different ages.
What Can My Baby Hear
Your newborn has been hearing sounds since way back in the womb. Mother’s heartbeat, the gurgles of her digestive system, and even the sounds of her voice and the voices of other family members are part of a baby’s world before birth.
Once your baby is born, the sounds of the outside world come in loud and clear. Your baby may startle at the unexpected bark of a dog nearby or seem soothed by the gentle whirring of the clothes dryer or the hum of the vacuum cleaner.
Notice how your newborn responds to your voice. Human voices, especially mom’s and dad’s, are a baby’s favorite “music.” Your baby already knows that this is where food, warmth, and touch come from. If your baby is crying in the bassinet, see how quickly your approaching voice quiets him or her down. See how closely your baby listens when you are talking or singing in loving tones.
Most newborns have a hearing screening before being released from the hospital . If your baby didn’t have it, or was born at home or a birthing center, it’s important to have a hearing screening within the first month of life. Most babies born with a hearing loss can be diagnosed through a hearing screening.

Factors That May Affect Your Infants Hearing
There are various factors that might affect a newborns hearing. Here are some of the common reasons .
- Cytomegalovirus infection
- Antibiotics such as gentamicin, tobramycin, kanamycin, and streptomycin
- Earwax or fluid behind the eardrum
- Objects such as toy, crayons, or food stuck in ear canals
- Being surrounded by machines that make loud sounds
Hearing loss in babies can display the following characteristics.
- It can be unilateral, bilateral, or both.
- Be mild, moderate, severe, or profound in intensity.
- Profound hearing loss is commonly called deafness.
- In some babies, the inability to hear worsens with time.
If You Dont Test Babys Hearing At The Hospital
While the standard is to test a babys hearing before theyre discharged from a hospital or birthing center, that doesnt mean it always happens.
You should get your babys hearing checked before they reach 1 month of age. Typically, your babys healthcare professional can schedule the test. If your baby doesnt pass this test, your pediatrician may recommend working with a pediatric audiologist.
Newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit arent always screened within the first few days of life. Often this test may be delayed until theyre medically stable or ready to be discharged.
Additionally, parents who opt for at-home births will need to work with their doctor to schedule a hearing screening before their baby is 1 month old.

When Will The Hearing Test Take Place
You’ll be offered a hearing screening test for your baby within the first few weeks of their life from 12 hours old. The hearing test is usually done before you leave the maternity unit. In some areas, it will be carried out at home.
Your midwife or screener will be able to tell you where and when the screening test will take place. If your baby’s hearing is not screened, ask your child health nurse, midwife, local audiology department or family doctor to arrange an appointment.
If My Baby Gets A Pass On The Test Could They Still Have A Hearing Loss
The screening test is very sensitive but is not designed to pick up very mild problems. It is designed to detect problems that are considered at least moderate in degree and likely to affect babys speech and language development.
Also, hearing loss can sometimes develop in childhood. Its important to talk to your GP or Well Child nurse if you have any concerns about your childs hearing at any time.

The Newborn Sense Of Hearing
Babies develop the ability to hear long before they are born. In fact, theyve listened so long, they arent just familiar with the sound of their mothers voices. They can pick out some of the distinctive patterns of their mothers native language, and they may even mimic these patterns when they cry!
In a study of French and German babies, researchers found that French newborns produced cries with a rising melodic contour, much the way French speakers do when they utter a sentence. The German babies, by contrast, produced typically Germanic-sounding cries with a falling intonation .
Thats pretty amazing stuff, and theres more: Newborns pay us special attention when we speak to them in parentese the slow, repetitive, musical mode of talking that many parents find natural when addressing an infant. As I note elsewhere, its likely that opens in a new windowparentese helps babies learn about our emotions. It may also help them opens in a new windowdecipher language.
But dont be fooled. Babies dont start life with exactly the same listening abilities as adults. Babies have more trouble picking out speech from background noise . To help babies learn language, we need to talk with them, one-on-one, in environments that are free from noise pollution.

Who Runs The Screening Programme And How Is It Evaluated
The National Screening Unit of the Ministry of Health is jointly responsible for newborn hearing screening with the Ministry of Education. The National Screening Unit are also responsible for breast screening, cervical screening, newborn metabolic screening and antenatal screening for Down syndrome and other conditions.

All aspects of the programme are continually monitored. For example:
- data from the screen is routinely checked by a programme coordinator against National Screening Unit protocol
- screeners have to pass an annual competency assessment
- the performance of the programme and each DHB is monitored against a set of indicators and monitoring reports are published on the National Screening Unit website
- services for the programme in each DHB are audited by the National Screening Unit.
