However, by as early as 4 to 6 weeks, youll notice a level of consistency emerge in his or her sleep pattern. Your baby’s naps will consolidate into fewer but longer naps instead of the short bursts that your newborn would take. We spoke to a real-life newborn sleep whisperer Ingrid Prueher, a pediatric sleep consultant, lactation counselor and founder of BabySleepWhisperer.com. Shes a former Wall Street analyst who became a sleep aficionado after the birth of her second son. He kept waking up every few hours at night, so Prueher used her love of data and research to get him in a good bedtime routine. Now shes on a mission to help families around the country get in tip-top sleep shape too.
Prueher uses a five-layer cake approach. That means laying a solid sleep foundation and then applying a training method, aka the icing. With a little groundwork, good sleep can become a reality.
My youngest client has been a day old and my oldest client has been 71 years old, Prueher says. Its never too late to get healthy sleep habits in your life and make sleep a priority.

In their first three months of life, you want to help them transition from the womb into our world. After that point, if your child has never slept well, start with some basics, Prueher says. Treat it like youre back to newborn days where you stayed home and focused on all of these things.

Try any or all of these baby sleep strategies to make sending baby off to dreamland a little bit easier.
1. Follow safe sleep guidelines. How your baby lies down and gets to sleep is a matter of safety, not just comfort. Put your newborn flat on his back in his crib, bassinet or playard without any loose bedding, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or crib bumpers. Experts also recommend room-sharing until baby is at least 6 months old. These safe sleep practices prevent overheating and suffocation, and reduce the risk of SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
2. Try putting him to bed drowsy but awake. Your baby isnt born knowing how to soothe himself to sleep, and if you let him fall asleep in your arms, youre doing his important work for him. A better idea is to rock, sway or pat him gently on the back until hes just nodding off, then put him down when he’s drowsy but still awake so he can learn to fall asleep on his own. Another idea: Try your hand at massaging your baby before he drifts off. Studies suggest that babies who are massaged before bed may produce more of the sleep-enhancing hormone melatonin. And its a nice way for you to bond with your little night owl.
Put Your Baby Down Drowsy But Awake
Were all creatures of habit, getting used to what weve always done or experienced. If your baby has always fallen asleep in your arms, then its no wonder he cries when he sleeps any other way.
The first place to start breaking those habits and associations is by putting him down drowsy but awake. That way, hell get to experience falling asleep away from your arms, in the environment hell eventually wake up.
After all, few of us can fall asleep in one place, get moved to another, and not wake up in the process. The same is true for your baby.
Hell also learn that you dont have to hold him to fall asleep. Again, hes gotten so used to one way of falling asleepin your armsthat any other way feels strange. By consistently putting him down drowsy but awake, he learns that its okay to fall asleep that way, too.
Sure, hold him in your arms, but once he starts looking drowsy, set him down where you want him to sleep so he can experience the transition for himself.

How To Get Your Baby To Sleep Tip : Avoid Eye Contact
It might sound a little strange, but it’s true. Prolonged or animated eye contact is actually very stimulating for babies, so it makes sense that you’d want to avoid this before bedtime and during night feedings and changes.
When you go to feed your baby in the middle of the night, it’s important to keep them as calm and under-stimulated as possible. Although you might be doing all the right things when it comes to ambiance you also have to take into consideration your own actions and presence.
Just a short gaze or excitement in your voice can be a signal to your baby that it’s playtime. Be sure that you’re staying clam and low-key when you check on them at night. Avoid eye contact and speak to them in hushed tones so they know it’s still time to sleep, not to play!
Start Weaning The Night Feedings
Once you get the okay from your doctor to stop night feedings, you should slowly start to reduce them. In many cases, feeding becomes a sleep association because you fed your baby every time they woke up. Just because thats no longer necessary, doesnt mean your baby wont want it anymore. Slowly wean them off the night feedings , feeding them less and not as frequently over a few days or a week to get them used to not feeding every time they wake.

Let Your Baby Lie Down Awake
I mistakenly assumed that the minute my babys eyes flew wide open after putting him down, that Id have to scoop him back up and re-do our routine. Only later with my twins did I realize that those were opportunities for him to fall asleep on his own.
Dont feel compelled to pick your baby back up if he goes from sleepy to awake when you put him down. He just might be able to put himself to sleep, especially if you give him a chance to. And given that hes not even crying, you have even less reason to get him out of the crib or bassinet.
Instead, let him lie down, even if hes awake. He might fuss a little, at which point you can try a pacifier or simply let him try to soothe himself. He just might surprise youas my twins didby falling asleep on his own.

Once you have seen your baby is tired, or over-tired, you must be confident you can get your baby to sleep. It may take a combination of a number of these techniques to get your baby to nod off, and that’s absolutely fine as your baby will often need help to get to sleep in the first couple of months.

Its often difficult to get your baby to sleep. However, depending on their age, there may be something else going on.
Sleep regressions happen throughout a babys development in the first few years. Theyre most common being at 4 months old and 10 months old.

During the first 2 months, your newborn’s need to eat overrules their need to sleep. They may feed almost every 2 hours if you’re breastfeeding, and possibly a little less often if you bottle-feed.
Your baby may sleep from 10 to 18 hours a day, sometimes for 3 to 4 hours at a time. But babies dont know the difference between day and night. So they sleep with no regard for what time it is. That means your babys wide-awake time may be from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
By 3 to 6 months, many babies are able to sleep for a stretch of 6 hours. But just as you think your baby is getting into a nice routine — usually between 6 and 9 months — normal developmental stages can throw things off. For instance, when your baby begins to associate bedtime with being left alone, they may start crying just to keep you around.

On average, you can expect them to be asleep for up to 18 hours over the course of 24 hours, especially in their first few weeks. However, some will only sleep for more than two or three hours at a time, and of course, they will need to be fed frequently.
You and your partner should expect some sleepless nights. We promise this phase wont last long, but it will probably feel like an eternity when youre sleep deprived.
Its also important to know what sleep cycles your newborn will have. They are much shorter than adults and babies spend more time in REM sleep than a deep slumber at first. This is a light sleep and means that they can be easily disturbed.
