Newborn Poses: How To Minimise Fuss And Maximise Cuteness

How to do Newborn Photography at Home

Posing newborns can be a little daunting on your first try. They are all floppy and cant hold themselves well, if at all.

Move slowly, be confident and never put the baby in danger. Use the parents to hold the baby in different poses. Then Photoshop them out during the editing stage.

The back pose is one of the most common and the easiest to start with. Lay them on their back on soft material. Place their hands on their tummies.

While they are there, grab some detail shots of their hands and feet. For the other two poses, read the article here.

Newborn Photography Mistakes To Avoid

Mistakes are helpful, as you learn how not to do something, letting you work towards getting it right.

This article here is to help you get past these mistakes, learning faster and faster. This will allow you to take better images sooner, rather than later.

One mistake to avoid is putting too much pressure on yourself. Stress is not going to help you capture that shot, it will work against you

Understand that photography, especially newborn portraiture wont be a quick learning path. It will take time and patience.

Summary For Newborn Photos At Home

Those are my go-to poses for newborn sessions and most most requested poses. Have a read again on the day of your mini-shoot to make sure you know what to do. Babies sense if youre uneasy. Do it with secure hands and with intention and they will stay asleep. If you are nervous they will wake up. If you at any point feel unsafe doing this, please stop. Its not worth endangering your baby. The easiest pose is the baby on back pose . I love the master bed for this pose. There is not risk of the baby falling anywhere.

Again, for my clients I am currently offering free mini video chats to walk you through this and to coach you. It should take about 15-20 minutes. Its a difficult time, and I dont want you to have regrets about missing out. I will be there to photograph your baby as soon as this stay at home request is lifted. Every phase should be treasured. Your baby will always be your baby.

Tip #: When To Take Newborn Photos

Okay really ideally, 5-10 days after birth is the best time. I think this is the magic number, when you’ve been home from the hospital for at least a few days. Your baby is still in that super sleepy state and is more likely to sleep like a rock through the shoot. Also, your milk has probably come in, which leads me to my next tip

Stand Directly Above The Baby

Newborn Photographer Rule Number 1: Dont shoot up the nose. And its SO EASY to make this mistake.

Heres another visual to explain what I mean:

Its pretty natural for all of us to lay a baby down, stand by their feet, and start snapping away, like in the image A above. Unfortunately, this isnt your best bet. When you take pictures from this angle, youre shooting up the nose, which is to say youre getting a LOT of nostril action in your pictures! The photo may also make your baby look distorted, with an overly large bottom half and a smaller head. Heres how you fix it:

Very carefully, stand directly above the baby. Secure your camera with a strap if you can, in case you drop it by accident. That will give you a much better angle for your babys pictures!

Check out the next two pictures, which I took within a couple of minutes of each other. In the first, Im standing near the babys feet. In the second, Im standing right over him.

Tip 15 Remember About Safety During The Newborn Shooting

Tip #: Give Yourself An Extra Hour To Get Ready

Trust me when I say that there are just way too many things that can come up when you have a needy newborn, and even more so when you have more kids! Get ready with an hour to spare, so that if someone has a desperate emergency crying, screaming, tantrum-throwing need, you still have time to put some makeup on or curl your hair. You’ll be so sad if you don’t give yourself this time!

How To Prepare For Your Newborn Photos At Home

Preparation is the key to success. I cannot emphasize this enough. The reason why families hire me again and again is because I deliver the images they love and treasure for years. I have seen families every year since almost when I began because it brings them so much joy. The reason I am able to create beautiful images each and every time is not because of luck. Its because of the amount of preparation and knowledge I bring to each session.

Set Up A Tripod To Get Into Your Own Shots

How to photograph newborns and be together with them in the shot if there is no one to snap a picture? The answer is simple just set up a tripod and mount your camera or a smartphone on it. Also, dont forget to turn on the cameras self-timer. When you are ready, gather everyone for the shot and set the timer. Prior to posing babies, check that all the necessary things are in place so that the kids arent motionless while you are finding appropriate angles.

Aim For A Sleepy Baby

For the best photos, you want baby to be calm, says photographer Michelle Rose Sulcov of Michelle Rose Photo. Sound machines can help lull your little one into a contented state. A happy baby makes your newborn photoshoot go much smoother, but the easiest way to get a great shot is when baby is peacefully sleeping, she adds. The trick, Sulcov says, is to feed baby before the shoot. Also be prepared to potentially give baby a quick snack or full feed during the session if theyre crying.

Is Phone Camera Flash Bad For Babies Eyes

After a lot of research, the doctors have come to the conclusion that there is no harmful relation between a camera flash and babies. So, using a cameras flash on babies will not cause any damage to their eyesight, let alone blind them. So, whenever there is a bright flash, the pupils dont protect the eyes from this.

How To Have A Successful Newborn Photography Session

How to take a newborn photo at home with Natural light.

Newborn photography is a super popular business these days, but if you dont have much experience in photographing babies, you could be in for a stressful venture :). We want to help become a success with your photography business so weve come up with 12 simple steps below to help you out.

Do you ever wonder how newborn photographers get their newborns posed so nicely that they look peaceful? In this comprehensive guide, we have collected the best tips and tricks on how to start with newborn photography and have a successful newborn session. These tips will be useful for those of you who dont have enough personal experience with photographing babies.

Read these 12 simple steps on how to work with babies in a photo studio:

Step 1 : Keep the baby warm.

Newborns have a difficult time regulating their own body temperature. To keep them comfortable with no clothing on it is important that you keep your studio warm.

I keep my studio at 85F. I also warm my blankets in the dryer or with the heater fan prior to placing a newborn on them. If you choose to use a heater fan be sure to keep it far away from the baby so you dont hurt their sensitive skin.

If you are sweating during your session then you have it nice and warm for the baby and he/she will likely sleep more soundly.

Step 2 : Make it noisy.

The sounds in the womb are very loud and some say as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Newborns will sleep much more soundly if there is white noise in the room.

Step 5 : Use the macro mode.

Bonus Tip: Share Your Plan With Your Family

Communicating your plan with your family is so important and often forgotten! Set the expectations ahead of time with your spouse and kids, and let them know why you are doing this, when youre doing this, how they can help! You can get them excited by saying youll be having a Family Picture Day to celebrate the newest addition to your family 🙂 Getting them excited will definitely help make the shooting process easier as you capture this special season of life.

Tip #: Research Newborn Photos

When I had Anabelle, I was delirious by day 10 when we had her newborn photoshoot. Don’t worry, I was delirious with Lyla, Millie, and Harry at day 5 too, but I had Pinned a bunch of newborn shoot ideas beforehand so that I wasn’t trying to frantically research a day or two before her shoot . Not a great plan. Figure out what look you’re going for before baby comes, get on Etsy or and buy a few props and rest easy the day of the shoot because you’re prepared.

Take A Crib Or Bassinet Shot

This is a classic shot that allows you to have a clutter free backdrop to photograph your newborn. Most likely, your baby hasnt even actually slept in their crib yet so the sheets are crisp and clean! Take a shot through the bars , stand on a step stool and take an overhead image. Lastly, back up and get a shot of how tiny your little one is by getting an image of the WHOLE crib. Please use caution when standing over a baby. Secure your camera!

For me, awake or asleep doesnt matter. My sessions are baby-led. If baby is asleep, great! Awake? Awesome! If you have a baby who is very fussy when awake , you may want to wait until they are asleep.

Lighting Tip: when placing your baby in the crib, place them at the nearest end to the window so that their face is facing the window.

Arrange A Studio At Home

Katie Evans Photography: 5 Tips to take beautiful newborn ...

For this purpose, bring a camera or a phone, solid-color backdrop, some item for a backdrop to stand steadily , necessary accessories, such as cushions or pillow, blankets, stuffed toys, baskets, a pregnancy pillow or a boppy to locate a newborn, a pacifier, etc. You may also turn on some calm music.

I purchased a flexible backdrop kit with white curtains. Such kits are typically quite affordable and their price ranges from $40 to $10, which depends on the quality. You may encounter a support system for approximately $39 or even a whole kit. Dont forget to bring some cushions or pillows as the newborn wont feel comfortable sleeping on a bare surface without any covering. I picked a cushion for a sofa along with a nursing Boppy pillow. After that, I put a white blanket on top of two pillows.
