Overheating isnt just a cold-weather condition hot and humid days can also be dangerous for newborns, who cant yet regulate their own body temperature. Heres how to keep your little one safe:
- Take away layers. When the temperature is over 75 degrees F, a single layer should be enough for baby.
- Cover baby’s head with a lightweight hat. Cold or hot, hats are important to protect baby from too much sunlight.
- Think thinner. When its really warm outside, use lighter fabrics, especially at night. Baby will likely still require one more layer, which can include a light sleeper onesie and a thin sleep sack. Once babies roll over, they no longer require a sleep sack. If youre wearing your newborn in a sling or carrier, be sure the material is breathable so your little passenger doesnt get too hot.
- Keep baby shielded from the sun. Most doctors support using sunscreen on babies of all ages, although the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t endorse the use of sunscreen on babies under 6 months old. For newborns, its really best to avoid sun exposure completely in hot or cold weather. Make sure shade is available if youre headed to the beach, and limit your time in the heat to a few minutes at a time, especially at midday when the sun is strongest.
- Protect those peepers. Make sure that babys eyes are protected from the sun with 100 percent UV protection sunglasses.

How To Dress A Newborn For Warm Or Cool Weather
When the temperature is mild, its still best to use the layer rule. Dress baby in as many layers as you require and then add one more.
Also, make sure that your little one is always dry because wet or damp clothing can make baby cold even when the weather is just cool. And check his diaper frequently when youre outside.
Additionally, no matter the temperature, make sure that your baby is shielded from the sun by his car seat or stroller canopy, a hat, sunglasses or just shelter.

Bundle Up For A Jaunt Outside
If the temperature or windchill dips below freezing, or if nonfreezing temperatures are mixed with wind or rain, keep your little one inside except for brief excursions, like to and from the car. If it’s not arctic outdoors, dress your baby in a winter jacket, a hat that covers their ears, mittens, and a stroller blanket or bunting. “Check your baby often for signs of discomfort. If his face gets red, his skin is warm, and he’s fussy, he’s probably overheated. If he’s fussy and teary-eyed, and his skin is cold to the touch, he’s probably not bundled up enough,” says Dr. McAllister.
A Really Warm Cosy Blanket

Newborn Winter Care Tip #: Know The Warning Signs
Its a delicate balance between making sure your baby isnt too cold…or too hot with all the winter bundling! Touch your tots ears and neck. If their ears are red and hot and their neck is sweaty, your baby is too warm. Try taking off a layer of clothes offering breastmilk or formula and sponging your bub down in lukewarm or cooler water. If symptoms dont improve, however, contact your pediatrician. To gauge if your tiny tyke is too cold, put your hand on their back, chest, or belly. If your baby feels cool to the touch, warm them up by adding another layer of clothing. But if you suspect that your too-cold baby has moved into the dangerous territory of frostbite, apply a warm washcloth to your babys chilly ears, nose, or lips for a few minutes dry your baby off swaddle them then offer warmed breastmilk or formula. And, again, call your pediatrician if your babys symptoms dont change.
Winter Clothes How Do You Dress A Winter Newborn
One basic rule of thumb to follow when dressing your winter newborn is to dress them the same as you PLUS one extra layer. Since babies lose heat quickly , following the one extra layer rule is the best way to ensure that they are warm enough.
One important safety tip: DO NOT strap your baby into a carseat while they are wearing a coat/bunting/snowsuit. This is incredibly dangerous as the bunting will compress in an accident and your baby could fly out of the seatbelt.

Winter Swaddles & Warm Blankets
Many parents swaddle their babies while they sleep until 3 to 4 months of age as it can prevent babies from waking due to the startle reflex. If you plan to swaddle your baby, youll need some winter swaddle blankets. Otherwise, you can use a sleep sack made from micro-fleece to keep them warm while they snooze.
You can use warm, regular blanket while theyre in their stroller or baby carrier, but dont use loose blankets while they are sleeping, in a baby swing, or sitting in their car seat for safety reasons. Thats why wearable blankets were invented as a safe way to put an extra layer on while they are sleeping during that first year.

Newborn Essentials For Babys First 6 Weeks
