7 Sleep Tips for Newborns: Help Your Newborn Sleep

Whatever the temperature, it is important that you follow the safe sleeping guidelines when you put your baby to sleep. Because babies control their temperature through their face and head, they should sleep on their back. This will help to protect them from overheating. You may like to dress your baby in night clothes so they are more comfortable for sleep.

To keep your baby warm and safe when they are sleeping in their cot, put them in a safe sleeping bag. A correct-sized sleeping bag will help to keep your baby warm and their face and head uncovered. Make sure the sleeping bag has a fitted neck, armholes or sleeves and no hood.

How To Dress A Newborn For Hot Weather

Overheating isnt just a cold-weather condition hot and humid days can also be dangerous for newborns, who cant yet regulate their own body temperature. Heres how to keep your little one safe:

  • Take away layers. When the temperature is over 75 degrees F, a single layer should be enough for baby.
  • Cover baby’s head with a lightweight hat. Cold or hot, hats are important to protect baby from too much sunlight.
  • Think thinner. When its really warm outside, use lighter fabrics, especially at night. Baby will likely still require one more layer, which can include a light sleeper onesie and a thin sleep sack. Once babies roll over, they no longer require a sleep sack. If youre wearing your newborn in a sling or carrier, be sure the material is breathable so your little passenger doesnt get too hot.
  • Keep baby shielded from the sun. Most doctors support using sunscreen on babies of all ages, although the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t endorse the use of sunscreen on babies under 6 months old. For newborns, its really best to avoid sun exposure completely in hot or cold weather. Make sure shade is available if youre headed to the beach, and limit your time in the heat to a few minutes at a time, especially at midday when the sun is strongest.
  • Protect those peepers. Make sure that babys eyes are protected from the sun with 100 percent UV protection sunglasses.

Cold Weather For Early Walkers

For kiddos on the move, a water-resistant or waterproof top layer is key. As the weather moves to chilly fall days that don’t quite call for a winter jacket, a lined raincoat is a perfect transition piece.

Hatley makes these color-changing Baby Bundlers and raincoats my kids went absolutely bonkers when they realized that their jackets changed color when they got wet.

Once the snow falls, snowsuits like the Infant Snuggly Bunny Bunting from Columbia will keep your little ones body toasty warm and dry when they inevitably face plant into a huge pile of snow.

While a lot of baby snowsuits come with detachable foot covers, youll definitely need to take those suckers off and swap them out for a great pair of boots if youve got a little walker on your hands. These booties from Stonz are perfect for newborns and early walkers and can be layered up with Stonz Bootie Liners for extra warmth.

All Season Carrier Cover For Baby Carrier

While we prefer a jacket extender or baby wearing jacket for keeping baby warm in a baby carrier, you can also get a baby carrier cover. This can give your baby some extra protection from the elements and is small enough to pack for winter travel with a baby.

We still recommend getting your baby a snowsuit if youll be wearing your baby in a carrier outside of your jacket.

Wear Your Baby For Warmth

Carriers are a great way to use your body heat to provide extra coziness for baby in the cold weatherbut then they probably don’t need that extra sweater. Even so, “always keep their head and feet covered as that is how they lose heat,” says Dr. Montague. As always when you’re wearing your baby, make sure their face is not pressed against your chest or clothing to keep their airway free. “And be careful of ice and slipping and falling yourself,” adds Dr. Montague.

Newborn Hospital Clothes Checklist For Winter

How to Crochet Baby Bear Beanie (Newborn)

Although you may be tempted to pack a ton of outfits for the hospital, you really wont need too much! Here are the essentials that you will need for your stay in the hospital and for when you leave:

Long Sleeved Onesies

Warm Blanket

Muslin Swaddles

If you plan to swaddle your baby, I highly recommend bringing your own muslin swaddles. When my daughter was in the NICU, the nurses kept saying how much better they were. I would bring a few

I also recommend bringing short sleeve onesies to the hospital for your stay in the hospital. I found that this kept my daughter a little warmer. Some moms feel this is totally unnecessary, so its completely up to you, but it wont hurt to bring them!

How To Dress A Newborn For Warm Or Cool Weather

When the temperature is mild, its still best to use the layer rule. Dress baby in as many layers as you require and then add one more.

Also, make sure that your little one is always dry because wet or damp clothing can make baby cold even when the weather is just cool. And check his diaper frequently when youre outside.

Additionally, no matter the temperature, make sure that your baby is shielded from the sun by his car seat or stroller canopy, a hat, sunglasses or just shelter.

Bundle Up For A Jaunt Outside

If the temperature or windchill dips below freezing, or if nonfreezing temperatures are mixed with wind or rain, keep your little one inside except for brief excursions, like to and from the car. If it’s not arctic outdoors, dress your baby in a winter jacket, a hat that covers their ears, mittens, and a stroller blanket or bunting. “Check your baby often for signs of discomfort. If his face gets red, his skin is warm, and he’s fussy, he’s probably overheated. If he’s fussy and teary-eyed, and his skin is cold to the touch, he’s probably not bundled up enough,” says Dr. McAllister.

Cosy winter blankets are much nicer than light summer ones. Use them to tuck babies into their prams or bed. You can find nine of the best baby blankets here.

To make the pram even cosier, you could get a sheepskin liner. The natural fibres make them very breathable, meaning its warm in winter and cool in summer. If youre using it in a bassinet or carrycot with a baby under 12 months, its recommended you cover it with a fitted sheet.

Newborn Winter Care Tip #: Know The Warning Signs

Its a delicate balance between making sure your baby isnt too cold…or too hot with all the winter bundling! Touch your tots ears and neck. If their ears are red and hot and their neck is sweaty, your baby is too warm. Try taking off a layer of clothes offering breastmilk or formula and sponging your bub down in lukewarm or cooler water. If symptoms dont improve, however, contact your pediatrician. To gauge if your tiny tyke is too cold, put your hand on their back, chest, or belly. If your baby feels cool to the touch, warm them up by adding another layer of clothing. But if you suspect that your too-cold baby has moved into the dangerous territory of frostbite, apply a warm washcloth to your babys chilly ears, nose, or lips for a few minutes dry your baby off swaddle them then offer warmed breastmilk or formula. And, again, call your pediatrician if your babys symptoms dont change.

Winter Clothes How Do You Dress A Winter Newborn

FIRST 24 HOURS WITH A NEWBORN AT HOME | Bringing Baby Home Vlog

One basic rule of thumb to follow when dressing your winter newborn is to dress them the same as you PLUS one extra layer. Since babies lose heat quickly , following the one extra layer rule is the best way to ensure that they are warm enough.

One important safety tip: DO NOT strap your baby into a carseat while they are wearing a coat/bunting/snowsuit. This is incredibly dangerous as the bunting will compress in an accident and your baby could fly out of the seatbelt.

Here are some specific clothing items we recommend having on hand to keep your newborn warm in the winter.

If you dont have one already, I highly recommend starting a general Amazon baby registry.

Winter Swaddles & Warm Blankets

Many parents swaddle their babies while they sleep until 3 to 4 months of age as it can prevent babies from waking due to the startle reflex. If you plan to swaddle your baby, youll need some winter swaddle blankets. Otherwise, you can use a sleep sack made from micro-fleece to keep them warm while they snooze.

You can use warm, regular blanket while theyre in their stroller or baby carrier, but dont use loose blankets while they are sleeping, in a baby swing, or sitting in their car seat for safety reasons. Thats why wearable blankets were invented as a safe way to put an extra layer on while they are sleeping during that first year.

These 9 Cold Weather Essentials Will Keep Your Baby Warm Until Spring

To those of you who dont have kids, dressing a baby for winter weather might seem like a non-issue throw on a big snowsuit and a hat and be done with it, right? Not quite. To start, your baby cant communicate to you when they are cold, hot, or just grumpy for no reason. Second, if theres one thing your baby is good at, its making things complicated. Lets say, for example, your baby refuses to wear a hat. Or the snowsuit you bought her makes her car seat unsafe. Then throw into the mix that her gloves never stay on, her boots make it impossible to walk, and that shes outgrown her unnecessarily expensive cold-weather sleep sack. Twice. With babies, theres no such thing as a non-issue.

But as the temperature continues to drop, remember this: you are not alone! Many parents before you who live in cold weather climates understand your frustration. As a result, there are plenty of small companies and brands making great winter time baby gear. Aside from basics like footed pajamas, socks, and warm snuggles from loved ones, below are nine of the best winter essentials for your baby.

Winter Essentials For Newborns

Depending on where you live, winter can be one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. As the air grows cooler, the last months can bring delightful things like fresh snowfall, steaming hot cocoa, and a crackling fire on the hearth. If youre someone who loves to bundle up, wintertime also means cozy knit sweaters, boots, and beanies. On the flip side, if youre more of a summer person, winter can also mean a runny nose, numb toes, and chapped skin. Factor in a new baby, and those not-so-nice aspects of winter are exponentially worrisome. Unlike when youre caring for yourself, chapped skin on a newborn isnt to be fixed by slapping on some of your heaviest night cream and calling it a day. If your little one is prone to eczema, the cold, dry air can cause flare-ups that are heartbreaking to see. To keep your newborn safe, comfortable, and happy, a little extra TLC is required during the coldest season.
