Whats The Right Age For Sleep Training
Most sleep coaches say the ideal time to start sleep training is based on your babys development, but is usually somewhere between four and six months, when your baby hasnt had much time to get used to nursing or rocking to sleep. At this stage, most babies are also developmentally ready to learn the skill of falling asleep on their own, explains Jennifer Garden, an occupational therapist who runs Sleepdreams in Vancouver. Around four months of age, some babies go through a sleep regression because their sleep cycles change and there are longer periods of lighter sleep per cycle. Its a great time to work on independent sleep skills, says McGinn. Other babies slumber derails around this time because they are working on new skills, like moving around and rolling. Some parents choose to wait until things settle down before embarking on a sleep-training method, but you dont have to, says McGinn.
If your baby is older than six months, dont worry, McGinn says: Its never too late to develop good sleep habits. Dickinson says he finds nine months to be a bit of a sweet spot for parents in terms of getting babies to sleep through the night. They are at a good age for understanding routines and dont need to eat during the night, he explains.

Sounds like bliss, doesn’t it? But chances are you’ll be wandering the halls a little anyway. You may find yourself getting up to check on the babybut relax. Dress them in warm PJs so you don’t need to worry about kicked-off covers, and turn the monitor down so that you hear them only if they’re really in distress. Familiarize Yourself With These Two Techniques
There are two proven techniques for sleep training infants who need their parents to help them fall and stay asleep past the newborn stage. The Method Might Take A While But Its A Short
For Jamie Windt, emotional turbulence arrived every evening between 5 and 7. Her infant daughter, Avery, spent the two hours screaming and crying. Finally, when Avery did drift off to sleep often only while resting on Windts chest she would wake up crying whenever her mom tried to put her down in her crib.
The whole process proved exhausting.
Then she learned about Patti Ideran, a pediatric occupational therapist nicknamed The Baby Whisperer, and she asked her pediatrician for a referral.
Ideran, who works at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in suburban Chicago, helped Windt begin a diary of her babys day, including her sleeping and napping habits. She taught her how to keep track of Averys awake times and look for cues such as eye rubbing or putting a hand in the mouth indicating that the baby felt drowsy. Within a few weeks, Avery began soothing herself to sleep, and Windt no longer experienced two hours of worry in the evenings.
Avery has been a different kid ever since, says Windt, 35, of Addison, Ill., adding that her daughter, now 10 months old, was born five weeks premature.

What Is Sleep Training
Sleep training is teaching your baby to fall asleep without help from you. That means baby is put down for bed fully awake, and she drifts off without being rocked, swayed, cuddled, nursed or shushed.
Sleep training also teaches baby how to fall back to sleep when she inevitably does wake up overnight .
Tip #: Give Them A Pacifier
If your baby wakes up in pain from teething, you can offer them a teething ring or toy. Theyll feel relief when they can push their gums down on something. And this might be enough to help them self-soothe. However, the FDA advises against giving your baby any kind of teething ring or necklace, because these pose a choking hazard.
Your baby will get more relief if the item is cold. So, you could give them a wet washcloth thats been in the freezer to chew on. Make sure the cloth is clean and free from strands and loose bits. Or you can invest in a cool teething ring that you can put in the freezer.
You can also give your baby a gentle gum massage. But make sure your hands are nice and clean and be careful if you have long nails. This is also a good way to feel if your baby has teeth coming through.
Always supervise your baby when you give them a pacifier and remove it from the cot once your baby is asleep.

The Cry It Out Method
The Cry It Out sleep training method is also known as extinction, full extinction, or CIO for short. With this method, parents take their baby through a bedtime routine, cuddle with them and give them a kiss goodnight, and then leave the room. If the baby cries, the parent does not respond. Eventually, the baby tires themselves out from crying or self-soothes back to sleep.
This method is well-known, and in some cases, notorious. Many parents feel uncomfortable with letting their baby cry out and not comforting them. They worry it will elevate the babys stress levels, cause trauma, and lead the child to think they cant rely on their parents to be there for them. Its also very difficult for many parents to hear their baby cry and not be able to help them.
On the other hand, proponents say that it works, and quickly. Many parents say their baby is sleep trained within a few days with the CIO method.
When To Start Sleep Training Need For Frequent Feedings
Babys small stomach is also a cause of their short bouts of sleep. Breast milk and formula is quickly digested by newborns, causing many babies to call out for milky nourishment every two to three hours. Newborns need to be fed about 8-12 times every 24 hours, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends newborns be fed whenever they show signs of hunger.
But, by the three month mark babys stomach has grown, which allows them to have a fuller tank that will keep them satiated for longer stretches at this age most babies need to be fed six to eight times a day. And around babys four month birthday they can likely go 8 to 12 hours without needing a feeding at night.
So, between babys three and four month birthday all systems should be primed to start sleep training.

Why Bedtime Routines Are Critical To Sleep Training
When babies come into the world, their sleep rhythm is chaotic. Not only do their sleep cycles typically last just 45 minutes, with brief wakeful transitions, but they also do not know the difference between night and day. And this last point is the reason experts suggest developing a bedtime routine.
At first, the routine does not have to be elaborate. At the very least, a routine should include turning off screens, decreasing play activity, and dimming lights. This will help a child start to orient to the rhythms of their environment.
But parents can, and should, add more to a bedtime routine. Experts agree that the best bedtime routines present a child with a series of cues that its time to stop being active and start getting sleepy. These cues might include a warm bath, some dental hygiene, a story, and a song. With each activity, a child should begin to relax.
Some experts suggest parents go the extra mile to make the routine a ritual, by adding special moments of connection. These might include a unique phrase or prayer, a moment of mindfulness, or a low-key imaginative game. Adding these elements are particularly great for older children who will start their sleep time with a sense of peace and connection.
When Should My Baby Start Sleeping In A Crib
This is a common question, but its also the one that doesnt have a straight answer. It would pretty much depend on how old your baby is as well as how comfortable you are with him sleeping separately.
The truth is that parents have hard times the first few nights, even if the baby sleeps well and hes not bothered by the drastic change. It would be a good idea to put his or her crib in your room for the first few weeks. This will get you used to the infants breathing noises, hunger signals, and sleeping patterns.
This period usually takes about a year. Keep in mind that there is certain research which shows that babies have a significantly lower risk of developing SIDS when they sleep on a firm crib mattress on their back in the same room with their parents.
Some parents, however, are comfortable with moving the crib in a separate bedroom only after a few months. This could also be a solution if the babys sleeping patterns allow it and theres nothing to be worried about. However, you should use a monitor to make sure that everything is closely observed.
