  • Spread your swaddle blanket out and fold one corner down.
  • Place your baby lying face-up on the blanket, with their head at the edge of the folded corner.
  • With one hand on your baby, pick up the left corner of the blanket. Bring the blanket across your babyâs body. Tuck the blanket between their right arm and their body. It should go under their lower back and bottom.
  • Gently straighten your babyâs left arm so itâs against their side. Pick up the right corner of the blanket and bring it across their body. Tuck it under their left side.
  • Fold or loosely twist the bottom corner of the blanket and tuck it under your baby.
  • The swaddle should only expose your babyâs head and neck.
  • Donât swaddle so tightly that your baby canât bend their legs.
  • Place your baby on their back to sleep, not on their side or stomach

    Figuring out when to stop swaddling is one of the most common questions I hear from new parents. Its important to know the answer since you want to be extra safety-cautious when it comes to anything baby + sleep.

    As soon as you notice any signs that your baby is trying to roll over, its time to ditch the swaddle. Thats because a swaddled baby wont have their arms free and will end up in a very unsafe sleep position if they roll over while swaddled.

    When does this usually happen? Rolling happens at different times for different babies, but anywhere between about two to four months of age is about the average.

    And in terms of signs of rolling over, heres what to look for:

    • Your baby continuously breaking out of their swaddle during naps or overnight, including a free arm, leg or even entire body.
    • Your baby is waking up in a completely different position than they were in when you put them to sleep.
    • Your little one suddenly appears extra frustrated, uncomfortable or unhappy in their swaddle.

    Special Note About Sick And Low Birth Weight Babies

    ‘Why, When & How’ to Swaddle Your Newborn Baby

    Babies who are born preterm and wrapped during the period of hospitalisation have been shown to have improved neuromuscular development 2,41, less physiologic distress 16,18, better motor organisation and more self-regulatory ability 19. Swaddling has been shown to reduce behavioural distress after heel lancing in preterm infants older than 31 weeks but not in more immature babies 18. More recently a study conducted by Shu and colleagues 22 showed that both swaddling and heel warming reduced pain responses to the heelstick procedure in neonates born at 31-41 weeks gestation 22.

    A study of preterm infants born less than 32 weeks gestation investigated the developmental benefits of positioning in the neonatal intensive care unit 42. Using a randomised controlled trial design, babies were randomised to be positioned in an alternative positioning device or to traditional positioning methods for their length of stay. Infants in the alternative positioning arm of the study demonstrated less asymmetry of reflex and motor responses than those positioned using traditional positioning methods 42.

    In the early weeks of life however infant wrapping should not interfere with skin to skin contact of the low birth weight infant with a caregiver. Kangaroo mother care, or skin to skin, has been shown to reduce risk of mortality and morbidity and improve growth, breastfeeding and maternal-infant attachment outcomes for low birth weight babies 43.

    How to Position Your Babys Arms When Swaddling

    Swaddling your newborn at night can help your baby sleep longer stretches at night. The purpose of swaddling is to help reduce the âstartle or Moroâ reflex. Yes, you should swaddle your newborn at night.

    The startle reflex is a primitive reflex that is present and birth and is a protective mechanism. With any sudden noise or movement, your baby is âstartledâ and her arms will extend away from her body, sheâll arch her back and neck. It slowly starts to disappear around 12 weeks and in most babies is completely gone by 6 months of age. References 1,2,3.

    Sometimes this startle reflex can be confused with some muscle twitches that happen during REM sleep. Rapid Eye Movement sleep is also known as âdreamâ sleep. In newborns they have less âdeepâ sleep than babies 6 months and older. Typically newborns transition from light or into REM sleep. When falling asleep they typically drop into REM sleep. Reference 4. Newborn REM sleep is different from REM sleep in older babies and adults. In adults, in REM sleep a person is dreaming but their voluntary muscles are paralyzed. You will NOT see any arm or limb movement. In newborns, it is different. In newborn REM sleep you WILL see vocalizations, smiles, grimaces and twitches or jerks. They are not awake when you see these things. Remember when your baby was sleeping and she started smiling. You thought maybe she was passing gas? She was likely in REM sleep. All good. All normal.

    Step 1:The First D – DOWN: Place a light cotton blanket on your bed and orient it like a diamond, with a point at the top. Fold that top point down so that it reaches near the center of the blanket. Place your baby face-up on the swaddle blanket so that their neck sits right above the edge of the top fold.

    Gently hold Babys right arm against their side and with your other hand grab the section of the swaddle blanket closest to their right shoulder. Then, pull the blanket snugly down and across Babys body and tuck it under the left side of their bum. Next, grab the blanket beside Babys left shoulder. Tug it firmlyaway from Babys bodyto remove any slack.

    This first DOWN is the key to successful swaddling! Do it snugly…or the whole swaddle can unravel!

    Step 2: The First U – UP: Now, holding your babys left arm against their side, bring the point at the bottom of the swaddle blanket straight up and place it on Babys left shoulder. Next, tuck the blanket edge snugly around the left arm. Again, grab the blanket next to Babys shoulder and give it a nice pull, straight outaway from the bodyto remove any slack. Be sure that the swaddle blanket is loose around Babys legs, but their arms are snug and straight.

    Remember, this last step is not straight up…its up and across. Babys arms will be held snug and straight, but their legs should be loose enough to bend at the knee and open at the hips.

    Ways To Wean Your Babies From Swaddling

  • When you swaddle your baby, try to take his one arm out. If the baby fusses and hit himself, that means he is still not ready, but you could try this method every week until you see him calm with his arms out.
  • Try to let him sleep in your arms without swaddle, then slowly put him to the bed or crib. When he stays asleep for at least 5 minutes, that means he can now sleep without the swaddle.
  • If you unswaddle your baby, but he keeps fussing, you can stay by his side and place your hands on his chest. He will eventually calm down. Then reduce the pressure slowly until you can lift your hand off completely.
