How Do You Relieve Constipation In A Newborn

Three Ways To Relieve Infant Constipation

Relieve Constipated Baby. Learn how to Give Baby Massage for Bowel Release

Lyndsey Frey WriterMay 10, 2017

During your infants first few months of life, his bowel movement pattern will change often as his digestive tract matures. At first, infants may have a dirty diaper after every feeding. At about 2 months of age, they may transition to twice a day and by 4 months of age, most babies go every day or every other day.

Also, any time an infants diet is changed, he may experience a temporary change in his pooping pattern, said Dr. Emma Raizman, a pediatrician at Akron Childrens Hospital Pediatrics in Medina. Introducing solids or switching to formula from breast milk can change the frequency in your babys bowel movements.

So, how can you tell if your baby is truly constipated? Constipation is based on consistency and frequency. Signs of constipation include infrequent bowel movements especially if he hasnt gone in more than 4 or 5 days and hard, pellet-like stools that are difficult to pass.

Even infants on a liquid diet can get constipated, she said. Poop should always be relatively soft. It should not be pellets or formed stool like youd see with older kids or adults.

If you think your infant may be constipated, contact your pediatrician. In the meantime, Dr. Raizman offers 3 tips to help relieve his discomfort and get things moving.

Things You Should Not Do When A Baby Is Constipated

  • Dont give prune juice to infants under six months of age it contains a natural bowel irritant, even when diluted.
  • Dont add any form of sugar, malt extract or rice cereal to formula it will not help the constipation.
  • Dont introduce solids before four to six months of age its not recommended as a way to treat constipation.

Their Stool Is Hard And Dry

“Consistency is key to defining constipation in breastfed babies. Rather than liquidy, seedy, pasty stools, the constipated baby’s stool will be more like little clay balls,” says Jane Morton, M.D., a clinical professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, “though it is extremely rare for an exclusively breastfed baby to be constipated.”

Formula-fed babies can be all over the map, too. And when solid foods enter the picture, parents should be prepared for the frequency, form, and color to change again. But as a frame of reference, babies 0 to 4 months of age poop on average three to four times a day, and after the introduction of solid foods, that reduces to approximately one bowel movement per day.

Constipation In Newborns: Know The Causes And Treatments

If there is anything worse than having constipation, its watching your newborn deal with it. Newborn constipation often happens when a child transitions from one food to another, such as going from breast milk to formula, or from formula to solid foods. The absence of daily bowel movements doesnt necessarily indicate constipation what you should look for is the passage of dry, very hard bowel movements. After knowing the cause of constipation in your baby, proper measures should be taken to get rid of this discomfort.

What Causes Constipation In Toddlers

Newborn Baby Constipation Remedies

Intolerance to cows milk is the most common cause of baby constipation. If digestive issues continue into toddlerhood, experts might blame insufficient dietary fiber, exercise, or water intake. Indeed, any change in dietincluding the introduction to dairy products or other new foodscan cause a toddler to get backed up. Too much processed foods may also be to blame.

Constipation in toddlers can also be caused by a refusal to use the bathroom. Kids might hold in poop if they cant be bothered to stop playing , if theyre wary of public restrooms, or if theyre scared of the toilet. The journal Pediatrics once reported that a 3-year-old boy became terribly constipated after seeing a single television commercial, in which the toilet bowl turned into a monster and the toilet seat was a chomping mouth. Along those lines, some kids are so constipated that every poop is painfuland as a result they avoid going at all, which makes the situation worse.

Bouts of constipation can be triggered by other stressful events in a childs life, like the birth of a sibling, parental conflict, or toilet training too soon. Toddlers might also get backed up from uncommon conditions like spinal-cord defects, celiac disease , lead poisoning, or thyroid trouble. Finally, certain illnesses or medications can also trigger constipation in toddlers.

How Often Should My Breastfed Baby Poop

Just like their formula-fed counterparts, breastfed babies produce a lot of poopy diapers during their first few weeks, often moving their bowels after every feeding. Beyond that, bowel movement frequency in breastfed babies can run the gamut! Your little one may dirty their diaper five times a dayor only poop once every few days.

How Long Can Your Baby Go Without Pooping

The frequency of your babyâs bowel movements can vary from day to day, and every baby is different. A baby who is consuming formula tends to poop at least once per day, but itâs possible for her not to poop for a day or two without necessarily being constipated. In the early weeks, breastfed babies may poop more often since breast milk is easily digested, but at around 3 to 6 weeks old breastfed babies may start having fewer bowel movements, with as little as one or two per week, but still not be constipated.

How To Tell If Your Baby Is Constipated

Newborn bowel movements vary from one baby to another depending upon their milk intake and body. Some babies pass stool many times a day while some can hold the stuff in for as long as 3 days. If you are breastfeeding, you may notice a frequent newborn bowel movement as compared to that of a fully formula-fed baby.

Your newborn is constipated if

  • He hasnt had a bowel movement for 3 days or more.
  • Even if he has passed stool, the stool is dry and harder than normal and the baby finds it difficult to pass it. You may find your baby making disgruntled faces while passing stool.
  • Sometimes after days of dry spell, you notice a watery stool and may confuse it with diarrhea. It is actually one of the symptoms of constipation in newborns, i.e., liquid stool seeps out of the blockage in the small intestines and end up in the diaper.

A normal poo should be easy to push out and look like a sausage.

But if your child is constipated, poo becomes hard to push out. Your child might feel pain and discomfort when doing a poo or trying to do one. This might make your child avoid pooing, which can make the problem worse.

Hard poo might overstretch your childs and cause small tears on the surface, which might lead to pain and bleeding.

Your child might also have tummy pains that come and go. Some children might show holding on behaviour like rocking or fidgeting, crossing legs or refusing to sit on the toilet. They might also seem generally cranky.

If your child has been constipated for a long time, they might poo in their pants without meaning to. It might be a small or large amount of poo, and it might happen at any time of the day. This is called soiling or faecal incontinence.

Some children poo 2-3 times a day, and other children poo twice a week. This range is normal.

When To Call A Doctor

Sometimes, no matter what you try, natural remedies just arent working. If youve exhausted all of these options and havent found a way to relieve babys constipation, you may be wondering what to do next.

Its important to call your childs pediatrician if baby isnt eating, stops producing wet diapers, or has blood in her stool. If baby is younger than four months of age, call the doctor if baby has hard or pebble-like stool or hasnt had a bowel movement within 24 hours.

How To Know If Your Toddler Is Constipated

Again, defined broadly, constipation in kids will look like fewer than two successful poops per week. But children can still experience discomfort before things get to this point.

If youre parenting a toddler, you know their verbal skills may not have developed to the point where they can pipe up and say, Im constipated!

Still, the signs and symptoms arent too difficult for parents and caregivers to spot.

Watch out for these indicators of constipation in toddlers:

  • stools that are hard, dry, or pebble-like
  • straining or pain when trying to pass large pieces of stool

Just like with adults, toddlers digestive habits are a delicate balance of multiple factors, from diet to emotional issues to daily routine. Add potty training to the mix and you may find yourself with the perfect storm of digestive delay.

Homeopathic Remedies For Digestion

You should always get your doctors approval, but homeopathic remedies are safe, easy to administer, and can be very effective at treating baby constipation. Simply give one pilule under the tongue or dissolve two pilules in a small amount of breastmilk or formula. Use a syringe to administer to baby and repeat as needed.

Homeopathic baby constipation remedies include:

  • Calc-cabonica: For constipation accompanied by teething or for babies who are sensitive to lactose or milk protein.
  • Lycopodium: For irritable or extremely gassy babies.
  • Nux-vomica: For constipated babies who are straining.
  • Silica: For babies who produce stools, but the stools are small and hard.

Change in diet. For babies, this could mean the introduction of solids, which can be very disruptive to their digestive system. Common foods that cause constipation in infants include bananas, applesauce, baby cereal, yogurt, cheese, cooked carrots, pasta, and white bread.

Lack of fiber. Fiber, found in baby-friendly foods like sweet potatoes and prunes , makes pooping easier. Without it, stool is dryer and lighter, and therefore more apt to get stuck in the intestines.

Potty training. Toilet training seems to be a trigger for many, says Harrison. When toddlers start potty training and exerting their own control over bowel movements, they often withhold stool as a result.

Genetics. Constipation often affects multiple family members. Chances are, if a parent has problems with constipation, the kids will, too.

Travel. It happens to the best of us. Being in a new place can mess with a babys circadian rhythm and cause pooping problems.

Eat A Normal Amount Of Fiber

Dont overdo it just because your child is constipated. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a normal amount of fiber for a constipated child. Just what is a normal amount? They recommend two easy-to-use strategies.

  • Eat 5. If your child is eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day along with other foods with fiber in them, there is no need to count grams of fiber.
  • Add 5. If you do want to track fiber grams, add five grams to your childs age. For example, a 3-year-old would need to eat about eight grams of fiber per day.
  • Medium apple with skin = 3.5 grams
  • Pear with skin = 4.6 grams
  • 1 stalk of broccoli = 5 grams
  • 1 cup of carrots = 4.6 grams
  • 1 cup of whole wheat cereal flakes = 3 grams
  • 1 cup of raspberries = 5.1 grams

In general, eat fruits and veggies and avoid high-fat overly-processed foods. Its the same general diet guidance as for anything else. While toddlers need healthy fats to grow, if they are dealing with constipation they can temporarily cut back on higher-fat foods.

Baby Massage Or Foot Rubs

Massaging your little ones belly helps move trapped air and gas, which contribute to constipation. Its one of the simplest natural constipation remediesjust move your hand in sweeping or circular motions across babys abdomen. Remember not to press too hard.

There are also pressure points relating to the gut on the feet. You can find these between the ball of the foot and the heel. Gently rub in circular motions with your thumbs.

What is the best remedy for constipation in babies?

Very rarely, constipation can be a sign of an underlying health problem. If a baby under 6 weeks is constipated, you will need an assessment by a doctor to exclude an underlying condition.

Take your baby to a doctor, or seek help from a midwife or child health nurse if:

  • your babys poo is dry and crumbly or like pellets, or they seem to have pain and discomfort when doing a poo
  • your baby is constipated and they are gaining weight slowly

For baby constipation relief, you can try giving infants under 6 months with hard bowel movements some waterabout one ounce. Heard of giving apple or prune juice for baby constipation? Babies 6 to 12 months can have two to four ounces of apple, pear or prune juice a day until their stools soften. The sugars in juice basically bring water into the bowel to help soften the bowel movement, Santo Domingo says.

You may have been told that using a rectal thermometer can help offer some infant constipation relief, but Santo Domingo doesnt recommend any kind of rectal stimulation as a remedy. You always run the risk of perforation, especially given that that area could be irritated, she says.

She also discourages giving baby mineral oil or Karo syrup for baby constipation. Weve found that it doesnt help. Karo syrup doesnt soften the stoolit just coats it to make it easier to pass, but youre still passing a large stool. And with mineral oil, there have been some reports of aspiration.

What Are Gas Drops

Gas drops contain simethicone. This active ingredient breaks up larger gas bubbles into smaller ones, which are more comfortable for a baby to pass.

Caregivers can give the drops directly to a baby or mix them in with formula or expressed breast milk.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggest that gas drops are safe to give to newborn babies, and adverse side effects are rare.

However, if a baby is also taking thyroid hormone medication, do not give them gas drops as simethicone

This is one of the most common potty training problems.

While I admire their gusto, its important to set a firm but loving expectation that your child will sit for a period of time on the potty, especially if you suspect they need to go number two.

Offering a selection of books or toys is a great way to help your toddler sit on the potty. Use special items that can only be used on the toilet as a treat for potty time.

Pediatricians recommend your child sit on the potty for just 3-5 minutes at a time to avoid making the potty seem like a punishment.
