How Much Should A Newborn Baby Sleep
Newborns require up to 18 hours of sleep during each 24-hour period. Most newborn babies sleep an average of 16 to 17 hours, however.
Unlike children and adults who generally sleep through the night in large, uninterrupted blocks of time, infants sleep in many short spurts throughout the day and night. Sleeping sporadically allows an infant to receive frequent feedings and the external stimulation needed for brain development.
How Many Hours Can A Baby Sleep Without Feeding
It is likely that your baby is fine and you can let them sleep! New parents are so often worried about whether their baby is getting enough sleep, but some worry if their baby could be getting too much sleep.
Babies do need up to 12 hours of nighttime sleep, but many take longer for them to consolidate their sleep patterns into longer stretches. If your baby is already doing this, the main thing you need to worry about is whether they are getting enough milk throughout the time that they are awake. At this age, we hope to see at least 15.5 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. Most babies are able to comfortably stay awake for only 30 – 90 minutes, so expect lots of day sleep. How Long Should Newborns Nap For
Because newborns have tiny tummies and need to feed frequently they will feed every 2 to 3 hours around the clock for a while. So if your baby is wanting to nap for 4 or 5 hours, theyre essentially taking that longest gap during the day.
Instead, you want to make sure you are feeding your baby every 2 to 3 hours during the DAY, and then allowing them to sleep however long they want at NIGHT.
If a newborn has gone longer than 3 hours since the last feed, wake them up and feed them.

Is My Newborn Sleeping Too Much
As mentioned above, most newborns sleep quite a bit. However, their sleep tends to be in short bursts of 30 minutes to an hour, and up to 3-4 hour stretches. Theyll often continue on this pattern for 14-19 hours per day. Most babies do not have a regular sleep schedule until they are around 6 months.
How Long Can My Baby Go Without A Feed
Newborns can generally go about two and a half hours between feeds. This time slowly extends until about six months when babies can go about four hours between daytime feeds and sleep all night without a feed. But, some smaller babies may need an extra night feed for longer.
After your pediatrician gives you the green light, you can let your baby wake you when they are hungry at night. In general, you can expect your baby to sleep an hour per week old they are, starting about 5 weeks old. So, a 5-week-old may be able to go 5 hours, a 6-week-old may be able to go 6 hours, and so on. This will vary from baby to baby, but what you should see is a gradual increase in how long your baby goes between feeds. If you dont see this happening naturally, it is most likely OK to nudge your baby along.

Should I Wake My Baby During The Day
Your baby’s power naps can feel like a godsend to you, but if she snoozes for too long, you may have to wake her.
Very young babies need to eat frequently to get the nourishment they need. So if your newborns sleep schedule doesnt quite match up, you should wake her if shes been sleeping too long during the day or at night.
Breastfed newborns shouldnt go more than two to four hours without eating, and formula-fed babies shouldnt go longer than three to four hours. The rule typically applies to babies 3 weeks and younger who are still establishing a pattern of weight gain. Once your little one is consistently gaining a healthy amount, your pediatrician will likely tell you that its okay to stop waking her for feedings.
Rousing a sleeping newborn to eat can sometimes be tough, though. Youll have an easier time if you wake your little one during a light, REM stage of sleep, when her arms or legs are moving, her facial expressions are changing or her eyes are fluttering.
Since youve gone to the trouble of interrupting your newborns nap, do what you can to try to get her to take a full feeding. If despite your best attempts your baby isnt interested in more than a nibble, its okay once in a while to let her doze back off.
The exception to the rule is when your baby is sick. Its normal for your little one to need more rest when her body is fighting off a virus, so dont feel too much pressure to stick rigidly to her usual schedule.

Does My Baby Sleep Too Much
Some babies are better sleepers than others. They might not wake up for meals in favor of sleep, though. Youll need to be extra careful during the first couple of weeks and assess their progress.
Keep an eye on your babys diapers. Their urine shouldnt be too yellow , and there should be an adequate number of stools of the right color. Mustard in color and seedy texture are normal.
A baby who doesnt sleep enough will be clingy and whiny. Or, they might be hyper and hard to soothe. A sleepy baby doesnt have these issues, but can make parents antsy by sleeping too soundly.
It takes at least six months for a baby to establish their own circadian rhythm. But if yours seems to be oblivious to any differences between night and day, a bit of help might be just what they need to get used to feeding at regular intervals and thriving.
If youre dealing with an overly sleepy baby, youll first need to make sure there are no medical issues causing them to sleep all the time.
Jaundice, infections, and any medical procedures, such as circumcision, can make your baby sleepier than usual.
Your pediatrician will check if your baby is gaining enough weight. If not, you might need to wake them up to eat every three hours depending on your doctors recommendations.
