How Many Ounces Should A Newborn Drink?

Learning your babys hunger cues is a crucial step towards making sure theyre well-fed. Beyond crying their little heart out, here are a few common signs that your little persons ready for their next meal:

  • Sucking on their fingers and hands
  • Sucking on their tongue
  • Nuzzling against your chest or breasts

How Much Milk Do Older Babies Need

An older baby can have up to 32 ounces of formula per day. In addition, he can have as much in the way of solids or water as he wants to supplement this. The mealtime formula is usually given at the end of the meals, to top off the solids in a comfortable and easy way. Even though the solids are now playing a larger role, the breast milk or formula still provides the core of the nutritional needs.

Thirst is an extremely strong drive. As long as a babyâs own regulating mechanism isnât tricked by getting too much juice or water, healthy babies will take enough formula or breast milk to meet their nutritional needs. This is one good reason not to put juice or water in the bottle.

The AAP and most pediatricians do not recommend feeding your baby any juice at all before the age of 12 months. After one year, kids still donât need juice, but any juice should be limited to less than 6 ounces a day using only 100% fruit or vegetable juice.

Water is only recommended for those babies over 6 months and in small amounts. A good rule of thumb is to limit the daily ounces of water to the age of a baby in months . Water can be served in an open or sippy cup.

However, formula and breast milk arent the same for example, breast milk is metabolized faster than formula. And because most breastfed babies are nursed, there is no way to tell how much they are taking in .

So, how to know how much breast milk should your baby be eating?

I recently did a survey of women that exclusively pumped for their babies, and one of the questions that I asked the respondents was how much milk their babies ate on a daily basis. Ill go through these results first, and then go through the recommendations for formula fed babies to see how they compare.

How Much Should My Breastfed Baby Eat

Breastfed babies should eat as often and as long as they want, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics . Most newborns nurse every two to three hours, counting from the beginning of each nursing session. That adds up to around eight to 12 feedings a day.

But you should let your baby guide you instead of the clock, so offer your breast whenever he shows signs of hunger. If your baby seems very sleepy, you should wake him to make sure he gets at least eight feedings within 24 hours.

As for how much he should drink during each nursing session? Again, theres no right or wrong answer. But you can generally expect your newborn to nurse for 20 to 30 minutes per feeding.

Its time to end the session when your baby lets go of the nipple, or when his sucking pattern slows down to four sucks per swallow.

Another thing to keep in mind: Its totally normal for your little one to occasionally want to nurse nonstop. Called cluster feeds, these bursts of hunger tend to coincide with growth spurts. It can feel like all youre doing is nursing, but just follow your babys lead and know itll probably only last for a day or two.

Signs that babies are hungry include:

  • moving their heads from side to side
  • opening their mouths
  • placing their hands, fingers, and fists to their mouths
  • puckering their lips as if to suck
  • nuzzling again their mothers’ breasts
  • showing the rooting reflex

Babies should be fed before they get upset and cry. Crying is a late sign of hunger. But every time your baby cries is not because of hunger. Sometimes babies just need to be cuddled or changed. Or they could be sick, tired, too hot or too cold, in pain, or have colic.

How Does Average Breast Milk Quantity Consumed Compare To Formula Feeding Guidelines

I was curious whether or not the results that I got in survey would be similar to formula feeding guidelines, so I looked up the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines. Reading them is a bit confusing, as the descriptions of appropriate intake use three ranges the age of the baby , the amount of formula , and the number of feedings .

To simplify things, I broke the guidelines down into the below table:

Here we can see that the total daily recommended intake is fairly close to the averages reported above for babies by age. The recommendation is slightly lower in the beginning, but on par with actual totals for breastfed babies by six months.

The guidelines specifically state not to feed a baby more than 32 oz of formula per day. Im not sure whether or not that recommendation would also apply to breast milk, but over 10% of the respondents babies drank more breast milk than that on a daily basis.

Note: The typical feeding schedule for breastfed babies may be very different from that of formula-fed babies. Its more common for breastfed babies to eat more often and less on schedule than formula-fed babies, likely because breast milk is metabolized more quickly than formula. This discussion is only about total intake.

How Much Formula Does My Baby Need

Newborn babies need quite small amounts of formula to start with. By the end of their first week, most will need around 150 to 200ml per kilo of their weight a day until they’re 6 months old. This amount will vary from baby to baby.

Although most babies settle into a feeding pattern eventually, they vary in how often they want to feed and how much they want to drink.

Feed your baby when they show signs that they want it. Babies tend to feed little and often, so they may not finish their bottle. Having a big feed does not mean your baby will go longer between feeds.

The amount of formula may change if your baby is unwell, in pain due to teething, or having a growth spurt.

Getting Formula Or Milk To Flow When Bottle

To test the flow of the formula or breastmilk, hold the bottle upside down when its filled with liquid at room temperature. The liquid should drip steadily but not pour out.

If you have to shake the bottle vigorously to see the drip, the flow is too slow. Your baby might go to sleep before drinking what they need.

A little leakage at the corners of your babys mouth while feeding is nothing to worry about. This will stop as your baby gets older.

If you have trouble finding the perfect teat, go for a faster teat rather than a slow one. Its normal to try a few different teats before you find one that suits you and your baby.

How Much Formula Should A Newborn Eat

One advantage to formula-feeding is parents can measure every ounce of milk baby guzzles down. But it can pose its own challenges too: While babies are blissfully free from concepts like the clean plate club, parents arent. Heres a breakdown of how much formula a newborn should eat.

Ounce for ounce, formula has the same average calories as breast milk, so the total amount that breastfed and formula-fed babies will need to eat in a day is basically the same: about two and a half times babys weight in pounds. The newborn feeding schedule for formula, however, might be a little different. Since babies tend to digest formula more slowly, theyll go longer between feedings. Baby will likely get hungry every three to four hours, eating about 2 ounces per feeding as a newborn and progressing to 4 ounces by the end of the first month. Expect to add about an ounce per month until baby is eating 6 to 8 ounces of formula at a time, which usually happens when baby is 6 months of age. In general, 32 ounces of formula a day is the most baby will ever need.

Disadvantages Of Formula Feeding

Just like anything else in the world, formula feeding your baby has some disadvantages too the first being the cost of formula milk. Baby formulas are expensive, very expensive, to be honest. On top of that, you would definitely want to get the best one for your baby. In that case, the prices will increase with quality as well. In contrast, it wouldnt cost you anything if you breastfeed provided that you can produce the milk your baby needs.

No matter how hard humans try, they can never make things as easy as mother nature. Infants need to be fed within short intervals throughout the day. It could range up to eight to ten times a day. And if you didnt know already, it is essential that you maintain proper hygiene when you are formula-feeding your child. The bottles and nipples need to be sterilized after every use. Thats a lot of work especially for new mothers. They have a lot to deal with as it is with the newborn So adding this one on top would make things even more exhausting.

If you are traveling with your baby, carrying all the different bits and pieces to make the formula, cleaning, and sterilizing the bottle is not very convenient. Moreover, its not very easy to get your hands on sterile warm water to make the formula everywhere. In contrast, you dont need to think about any of these things if you are breastfeeding.

Signs Baby Is Eating Enough

How long can I store breast milk? How many ounces should I pump each time?

When it comes to newborns, how often you should feed baby depends on how much milk your newborn wants. Keep an eye out for signs you have a hungry babylike if they wake up and start rooting, or suckling or moving their mouthpreferably before they start fussing or crying. Pay attention to babys cues even while you feed. Youll know theyre still hungry if theyre actively suckling and audibly swallowing. When baby stops suckling, relaxes their hands and has that sleepy, relaxed milk-drunk look, youll know theyve eaten enough.

Checking babys diaper can also give you a clue as to whether baby is eating enough: A wet diaper every three to four hours is a good sign. Stools can be more variable: Some babies poop every time they eat, others just once a day.

But at the end of the day, how baby is acting and growing are the most important , Trachtenberg says. By measuring babys weight gain, your pediatrician will be able to tell if your child is thriving. Babies usually gain about half an ounce to two ounces per day for the first three months, says Meryl Newman-Cedar, MD, a New York City-based pediatrician and clinical instructor of pediatrics at Weill-Cornell Medical Center. But keep in mind that the big picture is more important than any single weigh-in. In general, you want to see babys height and weight basically follow their own growth curve, she says.
