Why You Might Need A Diaper Bag

âDo I really need a diaper bag?â is a question you might have been asking yourself when putting together your baby shower registry or shopping for baby gear.

Technically, you could get away with using a backpack or tote bag you already have at home, but if youâre looking for something more specific to the task, there are plenty of great shoulder diaper bags or backpack diaper bags on the market that are designed for carrying your diapering gear and other essentials for your baby.

Many diaper bags include extra features like changing pads or cooler bags to help keep breast milk or baby food chilled when youâre on the go. Most diaper bags come with lots of pockets and compartments. And, with some diaper bags, you donât even need to carry a separate handbag or purse, as thereâs a parent pocket or pouch for stowing your phone, wallet, and keys.

When it comes to the look, some diaper bags are disguised as normal backpacks or totes, with a modern and neutral design, while others come in a sweet pattern or shade you’d expect to see in a diaper bag. Take your pick!

What To Look For In A Diaper Bag

Ive gone through quite a few diaper bags over the last 4+ years, and Ive learned a few things!

First you want to have one thats easy for you to carry. I found that having a backpack was the best option for me, especially with two rounds of 2 kids under 2.

Also, having a diaper bag with good pockets was crucial! With so many diaper bag essentials you need to have on hand for your baby, its necessary to have good quality pockets.

Packing a diaper bag well depends on being able to find what you need when you need it. So even if you use a regular bag as a diaper bag, its worth investing in a diaper bag insert to give you the pockets you need.

And look for something thats cute! Youll be carrying this bag every day for years so its worth spending a little extra money on especially if that means your spouse will take turns carrying it!

Diaper Bag Essentials: Whats In My Diaper Bag

Id be lying if I said that taking my daughter out way back when I was a first-time mama didnt give me anxiety. One of my constant worries was that I would forget the very one thing we would need or she would want. So my solution was to bring everything. And by everything, I, of course, mean that I brought two of everything. Everything! But these days, Im much more practical about what I pack in my diaper back. Not only because Im a veteran mama, but also because I cant lug around unnecessary items while trying to juggle both my four-year-old toddler and my newborn.

Below, youll find my current list of diaper bag essentials.

Can I Use Any Bag As A Diaper Bag

Many handbags and backpacks can double as diaper bags. Some parents choose to use a large bag they already have and just buy a diaper bag insert organizer so they have more pockets and organization inside their bag. With that being said, a diaper bag is a great purchaseor something to add to your baby registryfor even the most minimalist of parents.

While a stylish tote is made for a womans everyday necessities, it tends to lack all the necessary interior pockets for a babys everyday necessities. Todays diapers bags are as fashionable as the purse you use now, but theyre more functional for this new stage of life.

Does your favorite tote have insulated bottle pockets or an insert to store your portable changing pad in? A diaper bag does. Is your expensive fabric shoulder bag easy to clean from spills and spit up? Most diaper bags are made with easy-to-clean outer materials and a waterproof interior lining.

And moms, consider your partners. Are they going to carry around your purse when they take your baby on a daddy-daughter date? Im guessing their reaction would be something like this

A diaper bag backpack is a perfect option here because you can easily find one thats sporty enough for him but still cute enough for you and thats convenient and comfortable for both of you.

What Extras Should I Pack In My Diaper Bag

Youll figure out what your personal diaper bag essentials are, but there might be times you want a few extra items with you. These arent must-haves, but they sure are nice sometimes.

If your baby only naps reliably with some white noise, bring a portable sound machine in your diaper bag for some extra quiet time. You wont have to rush home for naptime and you wont have a fussy baby on your hands.

If youre breastfeeding, youll soon realize that youre not always in charge of the milk youre making. Keep a couple nursing pads in your bag in case youre running late on a feeding or you have a leak.

Carrying a portable phone charger and cord will help you feel connected and ensure youve always got your camera ready when your baby does something adorable.

Dont Forget The Car Seat

Be sure to install your infant car seat around the same time you are deciding what to pack in your diaper bag for the hospital. If you already have it set up in your car, theres no way for you to accidentally forget it when the time comes.

Beyond these essentials, you might want to pack a small bottle of baby lotion if you have a scent you love, and a baby brush in case your little one develops cradle cap during your stay.

Waterproof Wet Bag For Soiled Clothes

I guarantee there will be at least one time in your parenting experience that a child will soil their clothes, whether its a pee accident, a blowout, or some other experience that will result in wet clothes.

A bag thats waterproof that can hold wet clothes so the rest of your diaper bag items wont get ruined is one of the best diaper bag essentials ever.

I always put my spare change of clothes inside the waterproof bag so it keeps everything together. Then when I need it, I can just pull out the bag with the extra clothes and do what needs to be done!

What Should You Pack In A Diaper Bag For Everyday Outings

Once you bring your baby home from the hospital, youll want to repack your diaper bag, and then repack it before every outing. Here are some things to have inside your diaper bag:

  • Diapers
  • Food for baby
  • Bibs
  • Small extra sacks or wet bag
  • Extra pacifier and binky clip
  • Extra lightweight blanket
  • Snacks and water
  • Wallet
  • Small makeup or toiletry bag for personal care items.

As your baby gets older, what you put in your diaper bag changes. Take for instance some parents swap out a baby wrap for a structured front baby carrier once their child is around 6 months old and has good head control, so they can hold their baby but have their hands free to shop. Just remember to consider your babys age, stage, and every scenario you may encounter and then pack accordingly so youre prepared no matter what happens while youre out.

When packing your bags, keep in mind that, barring a long labor, you may only be in the hospital for one or two nights. Though that may seem like a long time, youre going to be busy recovering from delivery and feeding and changing your baby.

Neither you nor your baby has any use for the five designer outfits or the box of stuffed animals that your family already bought. Stick to the essentials and you and your baby will have a happy delivery and a smooth trip home.
