In a word: no.

Not really anyway.

My family always jokes, When are you going to let the baby come out of its room? and I reply smiling, In a month or two! 🙂

Aside from the germs aspect, babies can be overstimulated very easily.

People who are far removed from the baby world think its normal to talk very very loudly and try to wake the baby up to see the color of its eyes.

Its like I mean just no.

How To Find A Good Rhythm Routine Or Schedule:

  • Determine the average time between feeds. If your baby usually goes between 2.5 to 3 hours between feeds, create a routine based on those times.
  • Start your day at a consistent time. Choose a time each morning and feed the baby every single day at that time. Soon your baby will sleep until 7 and thatll be your normal start to the day.
  • Write down a feasible schedule that allows 2.5 to 3 hours between feedings with nap times in between each feed. See my sample newborn routine with all its times here.
  • Make sure general feeding times dont coincide with other major activities you cant change like car pickup, dinner time, or the bedtime routine of older children. Of course, youll have to be flexible, but take these times into consideration and attempt to feed before or after those events.
  • Cluster feed during the late afternoon early evening, more on that here.
  • Get the baby sleep routine cards, the baby sleep checklists, AND all 25+ routines for babies aged 6 weeks to 5 years right here.
  • Make sure to wake baby up to maintain your routine during the day. Dont let baby sleep for 4 hours during the day because, inevitably, shell need to feed twice during that period at night to make up for it. At night, let the baby sleep as long as they are able between feeds. You determine day, they determine night.

What Is Sleep Training

Sleep training refers to the practice of creating a bedtime routine designed to help your baby work on a 24-hour clock, the same way adults and children do. This can help them recognize when its time to sleep and when its time to be awake.

  • in the middle of, or at the end of the feed, change your baby’s nappy
  • have cuddle, talk and play time
  • settle your baby down to sleep

At night you may prefer to skip play time and simply try to settle them back to sleep.

Understanding Newborn Needs: Sleep Feeds And Play

Most newborns spend most of their time asleep they sleep about 16 hours in every 24. Theyre programmed to sleep in short bursts of about 2-3 hours between feeds, night and day.

Also, newborns need to feed every 2-4 hours. And they need your attention during the day and night.

The first few months of your babys life is the time to get to know your baby, and learn about your babys needs for sleep, feeds, play and settling.

You might find that a very simple, flexible routine seems to help your baby, and helps you feel more in control. But this isnt the time to worry about getting your baby into any kind of rigid routine.

A good way to understand what your newborn is feeling and what they need is to pay attention to babys cues and body language. Responding to your babys needs helps baby feel secure and builds your relationship.

When To Set Baby Schedules

If youve got a 2-week-old, forget baby schedules and just go with the flow for now. Babies get into rhythms starting around 3 months of age, says Cheryl Wu, MD, a pediatrician at LaGuardia Place Pediatrics in New York City. At 3 months, youll notice that baby has some sort of pattern throughout the day, Wu says. Usually around 6 months, theyll get into a rhythm for nighttime sleep, sleeping about 12 hours at night and waking up two or three times throughout the night. A daytime schedule emerges for most babies around 9 months of age.

Things To Think About When Planning Your Babys Routine

Is this your first baby and the only child at home? If you have other children the new baby will need to fit into their schedule. If you have to do the school run, the first feed of the day may need to be earlier or later according to their schedule. Afternoon naps need to be built around school pick up. Do you plan on going to certain baby groups or classes? This is where knowing your babys habits will help. Are they sleepier in the morning or afternoon? Look for classes that will fit in around feeding and nap times. They should all be flexible anyway and dont mind what the baby does during the class. What about when you are feeling more active, or tired? If you struggle when it comes to late afternoon, dont plan any big changes then. Not a morning person? Dont schedule classes at that time. Try to fit in a gentle walk in the daytime. It will help you both to get some fresh air, exercise for you and the movement will settle the baby to sleep.

Newborn Sleep Routine Path To Improved Well Being

Between websites, blogs, books, magazine articles, and other parents, you have endless sources of information on whats best for your baby. Many times, these sources give different information. But here are some basic tips that most experts agree will help your newborn get the best sleep possible

  • Teach your baby daytime from nighttime.
  • Your baby doesnt know the difference between day and night. You have to help teach him. During the day, keep lights on. Open windows and do things with more energy. At night, keep lights low. Do things more slowly and quietly. When your baby wakes up in the middle of the night to eat, dont engage with him. Avoid any type of stimulating talk or actions. Simply change his diaper, feed him, and put him back in the crib.

  • Recognize when your baby is tired.
  • Your baby will give you cues that he is tired. Catch these cues early:

    • Yawning.
    • Fussing.
    • Looking away from you.

    Dont wait until your baby is overly tired to put him in bed. If you do, he will have more trouble falling asleep, and probably wont sleep as long.

  • Keep baby awake during feedings.
  • Many babies fall asleep while eating. Thats understandable. Theyre very comfortable, snuggly wrapped in someones arms as they eat. But if you let your baby go to sleep, he wont get a full feed. He will wake up sooner and want to eat again sooner. Tips to keep your baby awake while eating include:

    What Is A Good Newborn Baby Schedule

    If you are going to try scheduling, I suggest you wait about a month , then do the following:

    • Carry your baby a lot during the day to help him learn the difference between day and night.
    • During the day, feed your love bug every 1.5-2 hours, then put him to sleep.
    • If he naps over 2 hours, wake him for his next play/feed period. Long naps cause less daytime eating and more hunger at night.
    • Feed him in a quiet room so he doesnt get distracted and refuse to eat.
    • Turn the white noise onand the lights down20 minutes before naps and bedtime. This quiets your babys nervous system and gives a clear signal that sleepy time is coming. Use the wake-and-sleep technique to help him learn to self soothe.
    • Wake your baby for a dream feed between 10pm and midnight every night to fill his stomach and prepare him for a longer sleep period.

    A flexible eating and sleeping schedule can be super-helpful if you have twins, other kids, youre a single parent, or youre working out of the house. But, the key word is flexible. If youre planning a 1:00 p.m. nap, but your little guy is exhausted at 12:30, its fine to bend the rules. Just feed him and put him down early. And if he gets hungry before his scheduled feeding time, try distracting him, but respond with promptness and love if the fussing persists, and return to the schedule later.

    Note: Rigid and strict schedules are contrary to our natural instincts, make us constantly watch the clock, and lead to underfed babies.

    Try To Have A Regular Bedtimeand Routine

    How to Get Your Newborn Baby Into a Bedtime Routine

    Find the time, ideally between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, that suits your baby to go to sleep. It wont always be possible but try and stick to it as often as you can. If they go to sleep at that time most nights, theyll start to learn what bedtime means .

    A regular night time routine bath, story, milk or a lullaby in a dark room can help too . Getting your baby to sleep in the same place at least most of the time can also make a difference.

    Week : Address Bumps In The Road

    Inching closer to 2 months and you may have experienced a few glorious nights of good sleep or restful afternoons of naps.

    Just when youre feeling caught up on sleep yourself you might experience times when your baby is sleeping more like a 1 week old.

    Things pop up in a newborns life for a variety of reasons. You might have a week of cluster feeding. Your baby might have digestive issues and get painful gas. You might experience colic with your newborn.

    These situations put a halt on working towards regular sleep schedules or may put a damper on sleep altogether.

    It may be easier said than done, but dont sweat it if youre not getting in your 10 am nap every day for the time being. Focus on taking care of your baby and figuring out what they need.

    The good thing about newborns is that they are always changing and evolving and that means difficult phases dont last forever. Whatever bumps come your way things will smooth out.

    How Long Will My Newborn Sleep

    Newborns should get 1417 hours of sleep over a 24-hour period, says the National Sleep Foundation. Some newborns may sleep up to 1819 hours a day.

    Newborns wake every couple of hours to eat. Breastfed babies feed often, about every 23 hours. Bottle-fed babies tend to feed less often, about every 34 hours.

    Newborns who sleep for longer stretches should be awakened to feed. Wake your baby every 34 hours to eat until he or she shows good weight gain, which usually happens within the first couple of weeks. After that, it’s OK to let your baby sleep for longer periods of time at night.

    The first months of a baby’s life can be the hardest for parents, who might get up many times at night to tend to the baby. Each baby has a different sleep pattern. Some start to sleep “through the night” by 23 months of age, but some don’t.

    How Much Sleep A Newborn Baby Needs

    Your baby will need about 9 to 18 hours of sleep until they are 3 months old. The average they will sleep is about 14.5 hours.

    Your baby is unique and may sleep differently to other babies. Some babies sleep for long periods, others for short bursts. They will sleep during the day and night. They might sleep for anything between a few minutes to a few hours at a time.

    Newborn babies dont know the difference between day and night. Their sleep is more likely controlled by their tummies.
