What Can I Expect In Terms Of Sleep For An 18 Month Old Baby

Your babys daytime naps should be further decreasing to around 2 ½ hours a day over two nap periods. They should still be sleeping 11 hours at night.

Of course, these are all ideal world scenarios. We know that every baby is different, with different needs just because your child isnt meeting these milestones exactly, doesnt mean he or she has a problem.

Leave Baby Alone In The Crib Or Bassinet

Baby should sleep alone on her back without bumpers, stuffed animals, blankets or pillows.

Its okay to start using a pillow and blanket when your child is a toddler and old enough to move out of a crib and into a toddler bed ideally between 2 and 3 years old.

If youre worried about baby being too cold at night, then consider a wearable blanket .

Are crib bumpers safe? Its best to avoid crib bumpers altogether. Like pillows and blankets, bumpers can increase the risk for suffocation and strangulation in younger babies. There’s no solid evidence that they actually prevent injuries in the crib, either.

Safety Tips For You As You Hold Your Baby

As you master holding your baby in the correct way, itâs also important to pay attention to how you carry yourself while holding him. The weight of your baby as you hold him can increase your risk of injury or muscle imbalances, which can lead to pain.To avoid injury, aim to carry your baby close to and centered on your body. Avoid carrying your baby on your hip as this can cause shoulder, hip, and spine problems. To properly carry and lift your baby, keep your

  • spine straight

  • shoulders back

  • core engaged.

When picking up your baby up from a lower spot like the crib or play mat,

  • bend your knees to protect your back as you bend over

  • straighten your legs as you stand back up.

How To Wash Babys Scalp And Hair

If you are thinking of washing your babys scalp, dont worry, I got you. Its effortless, and a little more effort and knowledge can make it even easier. You can wash the babys scalp and hair twice a week.

Just hold your babys head with your hands and give gentle massage with baby shampoo into the hair otherwise, give massage directly to the scalp. Rinse it out with a wet washcloth. While giving a bath in the baby tub, you can also tip the babys head back gently and keep one hand over their forehead while pouring warm water. This way, water will spill out from the sides of their head without getting into ears or eyes.

Washing your babys hair gently wont hurt a soft spot and will amuse your child as well. If your baby has a cradle cap, then gently brush your babys hair and scalp. However, take care of the scalp that you are not scaping or picking the scalp.

Set A Bedtime Routine

A study of 405 mothers with infants between 7 months and 36 months old showed that babies who followed a nightly bedtime routine went to sleep easier, slept better, and cried out in the middle of the night less often.

Some parents start their babys bedtime routine as early as 6 to 8 weeks old. Your babys routine can be any combination of regular bedtime activities. The keys to success:

  • Play active games during the day and quiet games in the evening. This keeps your baby from getting too excited right before bedtime but gets them tired from the days activities.
  • Keep activities the same and in the same order, night after night.
  • Make every activity calm and peaceful, especially toward the end of the routine.
  • Many babies enjoy bathing right before bedtime, which calms them down.
  • Save your babys favorite activity for last, and do it in their bedroom. This will help them look forward to bedtime and associate their sleep space with things they like to do.
  • Make nighttime conditions in your babys bedroom consistent. If they wake up in the middle of the night, the sounds and lights in the room should be the same as when they fell asleep. If you need to feed or change your baby during the night, keep the lights low and the talking to a minimum. Too much stimulation can make it hard for them to settle again.

Swaddle To Get Your Newborn To Sleep Through The Night

Swaddling typically starts in the hospital and often continues through the first several months of a babys life. This soothing technique has been proven to help newborns sleep through the night, and babies who are swaddled tend to cry less than babies who are not swaddled. In addition to keeping your little one warm and toasty in those early months of life, swaddling also keeps your baby from being disturbed by her own startle reflex.

Should Newborns Wear Hats When Cold

How to Buckle Your Newborn in a Car Seat

The simple answer is that newborns or any other baby should wear a hat when they are cold. Unfortunately, there are many factors to consider when determining whether or not your baby is actually cold and much of it has to do with her age and the temperature outside indoors. Lets look at some more specific questions about this topic.

When Do You Start A Bedtime Routine For Baby

At what age should you start a bedtime routine for your newborn? It doesnt hurt to start from birth but until your baby can stay awake for longer periods of time, it might feel like all you have time for is a feeding and diaper change before your baby is falling asleep, again!

In the early days, newborns dont stay awake very long. Sometimes they stay awake for only 45-60 minutes at a time! Most newborns stay awake 1-2 hours TOPS.

There is no right or wrong age to start a bedtime routine but we encourage them as early as 4 to 6 weeks old. Until then, your baby might not need anything special to fall asleep since many newborns are so sleepy in the first place.

Put Baby To Sleep On Her Back

You should always put your baby to sleep flat on her back on a firm, flat surface at naptime and bedtime until her first birthday. Tummy sleeping puts infants at risk for suffocation or overheating and increases the chance of SIDS.

Once your baby is able to roll over on her own while she’s sleeping, from stomach to back and from back to tummy, its fine to let her keep sleeping that way. Babies can typically roll over between 3 and 6 months, but it can happen earlier , so keep a close eye on her.

If it seems like your newborn has rolled onto her side, thats probably her reflexes at work. Shell likely lose the ability to do that by the time shes a month old.

How To Dry A Newborn

Once youve finished washing your baby, the hardest part is behind you! Give them a good rinse all over their body, making sure you support their head as you rinse all areas of their body with warm water. Then, lay your baby on a soft, dry towel and pat your babys skin gently, making sure to thoroughly dry in between areas of skin folds. Continue this until theyre fully dry.

Although its not always needed, you can add baby lotion once theyre completely dry. If you choose to moisturize, warm up the lotion in your hands first before rubbing it onto your babys skin.

Lastly, add a fresh diaper and dress your baby in clean clothes of your choosing. Voila! Your baby is clean!

Put Sleeping Baby In Crib Without Waking Them Up

Adorable baby laying on bed Photo

As a new parent, one of the most frustrating things is when you cant put your sleeping baby down in the crib because they keep waking up every time you even think about it.You can clearly see your babys tired. But, whenever you make that final move to put them in their crib they suddenly blink and look up at you with those eyes, as if theyre saying, its time to play!

You saw the eyes relax, mouth slightly agape, and there was even a phantom suck. You couldve sworn you had a sleeping baby on your hands, but now all of a sudden its playtime again.

What just happened, you ask? This one really shouldnt come as a surprise. Lets take a look at how our sleep patterns work to avoid this from happening again.

First and foremost, its not possible to spoil a newborn. Spending time soothing and cuddling your baby while they nap fosters development and helps with bonding.

How adults sleep

When you, as an adult, first drift off into sleep, your brain enters into what is known as non-REM sleep, or deep sleep. During this phase of sleep, your mind and body quiet down, your breathing is shallow, and your muscles are completely relaxed.

These two sleep cycles alternate throughout the night so in reality, you dont sleep deeply all night, even if it seems like you do.

How babies sleep

Why do sleeping babies do this? Simply because they werent completely asleep yet.

Why Should I Take My Baby’s Hat Off

It has an important biological function and it makes a strong case for taking the hat off your newborn. Mothers and babies are wired by nature to recognize each others smell. Your baby can recognize you on scent alone, and you can recognize your newborn on scent alone. These smells cause the two of you to bond strongly, right away.

Coping With Disturbed Nights

Newborn babies invariably wake up repeatedly in the night for the first few months, and disturbed nights can be very hard to cope with.

If you have a partner, ask them to help. If youre formula feeding, encourage your partner to share the feeds. If youre breastfeeding, ask your partner to take over the early morning changing and dressing so you can go back to sleep.

Once youre into a good breastfeeding routine, your partner could occasionally give a bottle of expressed breast milk during the night. If youre on your own, you could ask a friend or relative to stay for a few days so you can get some sleep.

Is It Safe To Stop Cosleeping

Safety-wise, theres nothing that you should be worried about. The most important thing that you have to consider if you want to enable your newborn to start sleeping on their own is how comfortable they and you are. It can be emotional for both of you when you choose to stop co-sleeping, so if you have decided that this is best for your family, dont be afraid to start slow.

If you are sharing a bed, move babys crib into your room by your bed and lay them in there. Once he or she gets used to that sleeping environment, you can slowly introduce them to the new world, which would be a separate bedroom, when you are ready.

Baby monitors can help you rest a bit easier once you make the move. You will be able to check on them and be aware of whats going on whenever youd like.

How To Hold Your Baby While Breastfeeding

How to use a Ring Sling with a Newborn

Here are four breastfeeding positions you can try with your little one:

  • Cradle hold. This is the most traditional hold and the one most moms try first. Cradle your baby with the arm thatâs on the same side as the breast your baby will be nursing from. Rest her head in the crook of your elbow, facing your breast, with her body turned inward toward you. Make sure to support your babyâs head.

  • Cross-cradle hold. Itâs similar to the cradle hold, except that youâll be holding your baby with the arm opposite the breast he will be nursing from. Support your babyâs head with your hand, place his bottom in the crook of your elbow, and use your other arm to support your breast from below. Have your babyâs body turned inward toward you. Try this position if your newborn is having trouble latching.

  • Football hold. As youâd imagine, this position has you tucking your baby under your arm as if she were a football. To do so, hold your baby to your side at the same level as your waist and support her back with your arm. Tilt her head up toward your breast. Try this position if youâve had a C-section, if you have large breasts, or if youâve given birth to twins and want to feed both babies at the same time.
