Stick To An Appropriate Bedtime

How to Train Your Baby to Sleep | Baby Development

Putting your baby to sleep later in the hopes that theyll sleep later in the morning most likely wont work. If youre following a schedule, its important to keep a regular bedtime for your little one to keep them on track and to help your baby sleep at more appropriate times. Remember, newborns dont have a set bedtime, because theyre just sleeping whenever they need to. But around 3 months old, you can start to establish a healthy bedtime to accompany your sleep schedule.

Ways To Get Your Baby To Sleep

There are a few different methods to help your baby work through the rough patches so you both get a restful sleep:

The âcry it outâ method. âCry it out,â or CIO, is the most well-known type of sleep training. In CIO, you bring your child through their bedtime routine, put them in their bed, tell them goodnight, and then leave the room. This controversial method is also known as “full extinction,” or going cold turkey. Some parents canât stand to hear their baby cry â and they will cry â and not be able to comfort them. Other parents report that this method works in just a few days and that their baby was able to self-soothe after a short bout of tears.

The Ferber Method. This method is similar to âcry it outâ but is more gradual. Using the Ferber Method, you follow your babyâs bedtime routine, put them to bed, and leave the room. For the first few nights, you will return right away to soothe the baby when they cry. When the baby is calm, you will leave the room again, gradually increasing your response time until the baby is able to self-soothe.

The âno tearsâ method. The most gentle sleep training method is similar to the Ferber Method, but with one exception: Parents are encouraged to enter the room and comfort their baby anytime they cry. The key is to put them back in their bed while they are still awake. This ensures that the baby feels confident falling asleep by themselves and doesnât rely on mom or dad to rock them into la-la land.

Mythily Ramachandran South China Morning Post

Cradling my five-month-old son Rohit on my lap, I pat him to sleep. My husband, Ram, is reading the newspaper. I dart him cold looks as the paper rustles.

“Can you not turn the pages please?” I whisper. His quizzical look while turning another page annoys me. My eyes point to our son. Without warning, I sneeze. Rohit wakes up crying. Ram and I laugh at the irony.

This decades-old memory came to me as I was reading Sleeping Like A Baby, just published by Penguin.

Journalist Neha Bhatt and specialist in infant and child sleep Himani Dalmia wrote this book to help address sleep problems in children from birth to five years. It is the culmination of six years of research and sleepless nights with their babies.

Sleep helps children to do better in every aspect of life. “It’s what allows them to grow, explore, play, make connections, build relationships, feel creative and express themselves while making them feel like a joyful part of a colourful world,” they write.

Bhatt and Dalmia founded a Facebook support group for parents in 2016, Gentle Baby Sleep India. It has nearly 55,000 members and continues to grow as more mothers cry “SOS” save our sleep.

“Babies need sleep for healthy growth and parents need to actively provide an environment for babies to get their required naps and night sleep. We support breastfeeding, co-sleeping, baby wearing , prevention of overtiredness, regular naps and early bedtimes.”

When Should My Baby Start Sleeping In A Crib

This is a common question, but its also the one that doesnt have a straight answer. It would pretty much depend on how old your baby is as well as how comfortable you are with him sleeping separately.

The truth is that parents have hard times the first few nights, even if the baby sleeps well and hes not bothered by the drastic change. It would be a good idea to put his or her crib in your room for the first few weeks. This will get you used to the infant’s breathing noises, hunger signals, and sleeping patterns.

This period usually takes about a year. Keep in mind that there is certain research which shows that babies have a significantly lower risk of developing SIDS when they sleep on a firm crib mattress on their back in the same room with their parents.

Some parents, however, are comfortable with moving the crib in a separate bedroom only after a few months. This could also be a solution if the babys sleeping patterns allow it and theres nothing to be worried about. However, you should use a monitor to make sure that everything is closely observed.

Give yourself a big pat on the back. Not only have you regained your sleep, but you’ve given your baby an important gift: Good sleep habits are as critical as good hygiene to a child’s well-being. Of course, there will be setbacks, such as an illness, a new sibling, or an unfamiliar hotel room. “Even children who are good sleepers will have problems now and then,” says Dr. Givan. Wake Your Babies To Eat During The Day

What?! Wake a sleeping baby? Yes. 100% yes. During the day I wake my babies to eat.

Newborns generally have one long chunk of sleep in a 24 hour period. I want the long chunk to be at night when I get to sleep too. So dont let your babys one five-hour stretch be in the middle of the day when you are awake.

More than that, if babies dont get all the calories they need during the day they will wake up for them at night. Wake that baby up and feed him. It is hard at the moment, but it will help you out in the long-term.

Keep A Consistent Daily Wake Time

I think most of us know that having a consistent bedtime is important. But having a consistent wake time is just as important.

Think about it. If you sleep in on a Sunday but still have to wake up early on Monday, it can be really hard to get to sleep on time Sunday night.

Babies are the same way. They are more likely to fall into a natural pattern in their days if they start at the same time every day. How do you do this?

Your wake time is the first feeding of the day that is followed by awake time. It is hard to stick to that time when a newborn actually sleeps in a bit, but it is worth it, in the long run, to keep that time the same.

When To Start Sleep Training

Experts recommend beginning sleep training when babies are 4 to 6 months old. This age range is the sweet spot, since babies are old enough to physically make it for six to eight hours overnight without needing to eat but arent quite at the point where the comforting you provide has become a sleep association.

The Chair Sleep Training Method

This sleep training strategy involves a chair, a lot of time, and a lot of patience, too. Like the Ferber method, you work to sleep train your baby in gradual intervals. Again, its a good idea to consult your babys healthcare provider before starting.

How to do it: You know the drill: Place your drowsy, well-fed, freshly burped and just-changed baby into their bassinet. But instead of leaving the room after saying goodnight, you sit next to your babys bed…only leaving after your bub has dozed off. If your baby cries, you return to the room and sit down again. No picking up allowed, but you can offer gentle verbal reassurances. Every few nights, you gradually move your chair closer and closer to the door, until you finally leave the room.

Extinction Or Cry It Out

The idea behind extinction is that you want to extinguish the behaviour by not responding to it. As with the check-and-console method, go through your bedtime routine, put them in their crib awake, say good night and walk out. This is certainly the most controversial sleep-training method, and even experts disagree on what you should do nextit all depends on what stage your baby is at developmentally, as well as what works for the parents.

McGinn, for example, suggests leaving your baby until the morning, unless youve predetermined that they still need a feed in the night. That first night can be rough, says McGinn. They could be up every hour crying.

Mitelman, on the other hand, recommends that parents wait for at least one or two wake-ups before going back into the room. Then, if the baby wakes up after midnight, she believes its OK to go back in, comfort your baby for a few minutes and then leave again. She also supports scheduling in regular night-time feeds if your baby still needs them.

As I explain in my article about night wakings, its normal for sleepers of all ages to experience many partial awakenings at night. When parents report that their infants are sleeping through the night, it isnt that their babies are never waking up. But young infants sleep very restlessly. They frequently vocalize, and sometimes even open their eyes.

Put His Favorite Toy In There

Do you have a little stuffed animal that your baby loves and that helps him fall asleep faster? If yes, consider placing the toy in his crib.

However, keep in mind that this only applies to older babies. Young babies shouldnt be given any soft toys into the crib due to the risks associated with them.

Its generally accepted that the right age for babies to be given a stuffed toy is once they learn how to love about on their own. If your baby knows how to roll over or even sit up without any help from you, then a stuffed toy poses no risk of SIDS.

Most babies learn how to roll over on their own once they reach one year of age.

What Are The Signs Of Infant Sleep Problems

Once a baby begins to regularly sleep through the night, parents are often unhappy when the baby starts to wake up at night again. This often happens at about 6 months old. This is often a normal part of development called separation anxiety. This is when a baby does not understand that separations are short-term . Babies may also start to have trouble going to sleep because of separation anxiety. Or because they are overstimulated or overtired.

Common responses of babies having these night awakenings or trouble going to sleep may include the following:

  • Waking and crying one or more times in the night after sleeping through the night

  • Crying when you leave the room

  • Refusing to go to sleep without a parent nearby

  • Clinging to the parent at separation

Sleep problems may also happen with illness. Talk with your baby’s healthcare provider if your baby begins having trouble going to sleep or staying asleep, especially if this is a new pattern.

Make It Feel Like Mommy

How to Sleep Train Your Baby

For you to make sure that little one gets used to the crib quickly and transitions from co-sleeping, you might want to make their new environment as close to the one that they are used to. The thing about infants is that they comprehend the surrounding world in a very sensory fashion. Therefore, if you manage to replicate the warmth, coziness, and the sounds that your baby gets to experience while sleeping with you, there should be less opposition.

Avoid putting a pillow, blanket, or a lovey in the crib with your newborn child because it increases the risk of suffocation. Sleep sacks and swaddles work wonders to keep those little arms contained as if they are being held. Sound machines can give baby the illusion that they are close to your body.

If the little one is still protesting, stand there for a few minutes and place your hand on their chest to soothe. Pacifiers can satisfy their need for comfort as well.
