What Does A Summer Baby Wear Home From The Hospital

Week in Hospital with a Newborn + Bringing Baby Home!
  • / Last Updated on October 21, 2021

Nine long months of pregnancy all lead to the one big day when your baby is born and you finally get to meet the person that youve been waiting for! To have the smoothest experience possible, we like to plan ahead for whatever we need to bring to the hospital to make our stay comfortable and help get our baby home safely. Down here in the South, it can get HOT for much of the year so its a definitely a good idea to think about what your summer baby should wear home from the hospital.

For most situations, youll want to dress your summer baby in a simple short-sleeved onesie and socks when leaving the hospital. Be sure to keep hats, blankets, and other layers handy in case the air conditioning makes things too cold. By using layers, you can always add or subtract as needed.

It can be overwhelming to make decisions when you have a new baby there will be a lot of them! By putting some thought into your hospital bag and going home outfits ahead of time, youll save yourself some stress. Lets dive into a few considerations for summer babies.

What Do Moms Wear Home From The Hospital

  • THICK COZY SOCKS AND SLIPPERS. Bring a few warm and comfy pieces in case you get cold and also, dont forget your feet.
  • POSTPARTUM HOSPITAL OUTFIT: GOWN + ROBE.
  • Hospital Delivery Gown.
  • LOOSE STRETCHY PANTS OR JOGGERS.
  • Maternity Leggings.
  • MATERNITY UNDERWEAR TO WEAR AFTER DELIVERY IN HOSPITAL.

Not Necessarily But Helpful Items For Your Baby

Once you have gotten your going-home outfits and car seat ready, you are actually set to go. But here are a couple of items that you will be glad you brought with you to the hospital:

  • A Velcro Swaddle. Although hospitals provide you with receiving blankets that make for absolutely good swaddles, you may find it easier to use a Velcro swaddle that you can put on quickly and easily.
  • Newborn electric nail file. Newborn nails can be long! having an electric baby nail trimmer in your bag will smooth everything out, and make your first encounter with your baby much more peaceful.
  • Camera and Photo props. If you want to take special pictures of your babys first moments of life, you can bring some cute photo props to the hospital with you. They can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. A letter board, headband, or special swaddle blanket with a hat can make your babys first photos that much more special.

What Outfit Should My Baby Wear When Coming Home From The Hospital

While nobody can deny that a baby in a cute dress or a tiny suit is adorable, this isnt the best time to be playing dress-up. You will be tired, your baby will be tired, and trying to get them into a complicated outfit will only serve to aggravate matters.

If you really want that fancy outfit, wait until youre home and have a party for everyone to meet the baby, but until then, you should start with something much simpler.

A good outfit to bring your baby home in from the hospital is a onesie for new-borns, paired with some trousers, a pair of socks, and perhaps an overshirt if it is particularly cold you could also add a wool or cotton hat, and a light blanket for travelling outdoors.

The world of baby fashion has grown immensely over the last twenty years, so just because your outfit should be simple, doesnt mean that it has to look bad.

Just be careful when youre shopping for your first baby outfit that you check the weight of the material sleep sacks are useful at home, but they arent a good choice for travel since they can get in the way of the seatbelts in the baby car seat.

What You’ll Need For Labour And Birth

Get a few things ready at least 3 weeks before your due date.

For yourself, you’ll probably want to pack:

  • your birth plan and hospital notes
  • something loose and comfortable to wear during labour that does not restrict you from moving around or make you too hot
  • 3 changes of loose, comfortable clothes
  • 2 or 3 comfortable and supportive bras, including nursing bras if you’re planning to breastfeed remember, your breasts will be much larger than usual
  • 2 packets of super-absorbent sanitary or maternity pads
  • 5 or 6 pairs of knickers you may want to bring some disposable ones
  • your washbag with a toothbrush, hairbrush, flannel, soap, lip balm, deodorant, hair ties and other toiletries
  • things to help you pass the time and relax for example, books, magazines, music or podcasts
  • a fan or water spray to cool you down
  • front-opening or loose-fitting nighties or tops if you’re going to breastfeed
  • dressing gown and slippers
  • a TENS machine if you intend to use one
  • any medicines you’re taking

For the baby, you might want to pack:

  • bodysuits, vests and sleepsuits
  • an outfit for going home in
  • a hat, scratch mittens and socks or booties
  • plenty of nappies
  • a car seat for the trip home

What Should Newborns Be Wearing

Asked By : Robert Taylor

Clothes should be comfortable, soft and easy to take care of. Stretchy jumpsuits that fasten at the front are best, as well as tops with envelope necks, which are easier to get over your babys head. Jumpsuits with zips can make dressing your baby quick and easy too. Clothes made from cotton are a good choice.

How Soon Can You Take A Bath After Having A Baby

Generally speaking, its best to wait at least four weeks before taking your first bath after giving birth or until youve gotten the go ahead from your healthcare provider. In those first few weeks postpartum, your cervix is still somewhat dilated, regardless of whether you had a vaginal delivery or a c-section.

    Lots Of Cute Baby Clothes

I couldnt wait to dress my first baby in all the cute clothes I had purchased or received. Little did I know that keeping him in a diaper and onesie provided by the hospital was much more convenient for skin-to-skin time, feedings, and seemingly constant diaper changes. All you really need is one weather-appropriate outfit for your baby to wear home.

Why Should You Pack A Blanket

When most people think of summer, they think of heat. However, summer is not always hot. To begin with, in most regions of the United States, the beginning and end of summer tend to exhibit spring and fall temperatures more often than summer temperatures, respectively. Daily weather events like rain can change the temperature as well.

Average summer temperatures for the regions of the United States are:

    • Pacific Northwest 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit
    • West Coast 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit
    • South 80 to 100+ Fahrenheit
    • Midwest 50 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit
    • East Coast 70 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit
    • New England 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit

As you can see, the temperatures can range from rather cool to extremely hot depending on the region of the United States you live in. Therefore, packing a blanket for your newborn is absolutely necessary.

Cotton is always a great choice for baby blankets, but bamboo rayon is another amazing choice for blanket fabric for your baby. Bamboo rayon is ultra-soft, durable, great for sensitive skin, and thermal-regulating. Both cotton and bamboo rayon blankets are perfect for summer layering.

List Of Essential Baby Clothes For Hospital

Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your new baby. You must be ecstatic about the big day! Yet, do you know which kinds of clothes you should have in your hospital bag? If not, continue reading as we discuss the most vital clothes you must pack for the babys delivery. First I will discuss the details of the essential baby clothes for hospital bags. Then I will provide a brief baby hospital bag checklist to sum it all up at the bottom of this post.

What Do Newborns Wear When They Come Home

Babies are often overdressed for the first trip home. Dress your baby as you would dress yourself. So, if youd be too warm in a knitted hat during the summer, your baby probably will be, too. In warm weather, dress your baby in a T-shirt and light cotton pants or a baby blanket over bare legs.

Of course, a blanket isnt necessary when baby is up and about, practicing her tummy time. But if shes nursing, in a stroller or being carried out to the car, a blanket will keep her feeling cozy and protected. Also, Smith says, any baby leaving the hospital needs to be covered up, more so germs. In summer, a light blanket will do. Opt for something thicker as the days get chillier. Whatever the case may be, wrap her up from toes to neck, and secure it in such a way so it doesnt end up flapping in her face. If youll be out and about for a while in winter, consider putting baby in a coat, if you have one. Otherwise dress baby in extra-warm layers and extra-thick baby bunting or a toasty foot muff.

Unless You Dont Have Air Conditioning It Will Be Colder Than You Think

While its easy to freak out about extreme temperatures, the reality is that most places youll have your newborn in from birth will have some kind of air conditioning cranked up to the maximum. When it comes to what a summer baby should wear home from the hospital, its probably a better question to ask what an air conditioned baby should be wearing home.

With that in mind, you should plan your newborn wardrobe around room temperature and not worry too much about the rest. Based on my personal experience, the two hospitals that my babies were born in were flat out COLD while we were there and half the time we were worried about them staying WARM!

Of course, if you are anticipating an extended stay outside, whether it be the walk to the car or even walking home with your baby if you dont have a car in the city, then youll need to keep the clothing light and focus on protecting your baby from the sun. In these situations, a car seat/stroller combo with a thick cover or umbrella will probably be your best bet.

    When To Call The Doctor

Your baby’s health care provider expects calls from new parents on many topics, including breastfeeding and health concerns . They’d rather have you call than worry about something needlessly.

If you wonder whether you should call the doctor’s office, do it, especially if you see something unexpected or different that concerns you. Call if you see any of these signs:

    • rectal temperature of 100.4°F or higher
    • symptoms of dehydration
    • a soft spot that bulges when your baby’s quiet and upright
    • a baby that is difficult to rouse
    • rapid or labored breathing
    • repeated forceful vomiting or an inability to keep fluids down
    • bloody vomit or stool
    • more than eight diarrhea stools in 8 hours

If your concern is urgent, call your doctor and take your child to the emergency room. Remember, with young infants, minor conditions can sometimes change quickly.

    What Is A Tog Baby

TOG Rating is a number which tells you how warm a garment will keep your baby . The higher the number, the warmer your little one will be when wearing the garment. This means higher TOG ratings keep your baby warm during colder winter months, while lower TOG ratings keep your baby cool in the hotter summer season.

Encourage your partner to pack their own bag of essentials for the birth. While they wont need quite as much as you and the baby, having their own gear on hand can make the time at the hospital much easier. At a minimum, we suggest they pack:

    • Change of clothes
    • Cell phone charger
    • Snacks and water

If your partner plans on staying with you after the birth, theyll need to include a pillow, blanket, eye mask, earplugs, and toiletries in their kit.Sometimes, though, if you live close to the hospital, the nurses will encourage your partner to go home and get a good nights sleep so they can come back fresh in the morning. This is especially common if you plan on breastfeeding your little one.The nurses will be there to help you, so your partner may have nothing to do. Theyre better off recuperating at home so they can support you the next day when you need it the most.Talk to your doctor and the hospital about what they recommend and then your partner can pack their bag accordingly.

    Baby Going Home Outfit Sizing

Buying the right size for the baby coming home outfit seems straightforward, but it can sometimes be a challenge. Most baby outfits run big these days, with the majority sized for a 3-month-old rather than an infant, Gersin says. This is especially the case for any outfits labeled 0-3 months. Unless you know your baby will be 9 to 10 pounds at birth, its best to only bring clothing labeled as newborn to the hospital, she says.

If youre worried, bring two options for the newborn take-home outfit: one thats small and one thats a bit bigger. But theres no need to stress too much about this. If the outfit is a bit too big, baby wont care and the outfit will function to keep baby warm and protected against the elements, Gersin says. And if the outfit is a wee bit small? You can make some simple adjustments as needed: Dont snap the onesie closed at the bottom, keep hoodies unzipped or scrap a too-snug sweater altogether.

Above all else, have fun shopping for babys first outfit. Find something you love and enjoy this milestone moment. Youll be bringing baby home soon, and this is something to celebrateso dont stress). Baby will look adorable no matter what you choose.

Newborn Hospital Clothes Checklist For Winter

Although you may be tempted to pack a ton of outfits for the hospital, you really wont need too much! Here are the essentials that you will need for your stay in the hospital and for when you leave:

    Long Sleeved Onesies

    Warm Blanket

    Muslin Swaddles

If you plan to swaddle your baby, I highly recommend bringing your own muslin swaddles. When my daughter was in the NICU, the nurses kept saying how much better they were. I would bring a few

I also recommend bringing short sleeve onesies to the hospital for your stay in the hospital. I found that this kept my daughter a little warmer. Some moms feel this is totally unnecessary, so its completely up to you, but it wont hurt to bring them!
