Again, its perfectly normal for babies to wake at night to feed, but you can have babies who wake only to feed and essentially sleep through the feed.

Creating A Sleep Schedule For Your Toddler

While no childâs schedule is exactly the same, there are tons of sample toddler sleep schedules to help gauge what might work best for them. Take a look at this sample schedule below for a 2 year old, noting what could be moved around to fit your familyâs lifestyle.

6:30 am
7:00 pm Bedtime

With nothing set in stone, you can shift this schedule around based on your toddlerâs sleep and wake patterns. Even though thereâs plenty of room for customization, there are a few factors youâll want to remember when youâre creating a schedule for your childâs sleep.

  • Be sure not to let your toddler sleep past the scheduled time during their naps. If your toddler is sleeping a lot during the day, you run the risk of delayed bedtimes or early waking in the mornings. Do yourself a favor and wake them when itâs time!
  • Watching for overtiredness can help you pinpoint the optimal rest times for your toddler. You want to schedule their nap and bedtimes before they reach this point to avoid that rush of overtired, grouchy energy.
  • Recognize when your toddler has outgrown their bedtime and nap schedule and begin to adapt. If you notice their sleep patterns changing, shift things around until the schedule works.
  • Create a backup schedule for the days you canât abide by the normal way of things. A shift in wake time, nap time, and the like can make those heavily scheduled days a bit easier when it comes to sleep.

A Note On Sleep Patterns And Cycles

Within the first 6 weeks after birth, babies typically take a nap between their 2 or 3 hourly feeds.

For the first three weeks of a babys life, they are relying on maternal melatonin to help them prepare for sleep and their drive to sleep is strong.

Sleep cycles typically last about 45 minutes to an hour for newborns.

0-10 minutes they start to fall asleep, 10 to 20 minutes they are getting into deeper sleep.

20 to 30 minutes they are heavily asleep, 30 to 40 minutes they are coming out of heavy sleep, and 40 to 50 or 60 minutes they are in light sleep and easy to wake up.

This is why if you help baby to sleep by patting or shushing, but only do it for 5 minutes, baby wakes up or cries.

Its because they are not yet in deep sleep.

How Much Sleep Does A 14

Although your little one is growing older, your baby still requires a lot of sleep: a newborn should get 14-17 hours of sleep per 24 hours, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

By 14 weeks, your baby is nearing what most parents refer to as the four-month sleep regression,’ says Rachel Mitchell, a certified pediatric and maternity sleep consultant. This can feel scary if you are anticipating your babys sleep to become worse, but remember what is actually happening is that your baby is progressing. While this progression can affect sleep, it doesnt affect all babies in the same way. For some it is a very subtle shift and for others, it is more noticeable. Some babies also start this progression a bit early, so if you notice that your baby starts to wake up more frequently at night, or suddenly take short naps, it is possible they are moving through this progression. The best thing you can do for your baby is to stay consistent and keep addressing the foundations of sleep. Try not to panic or change too many things at once, as this can cause your baby to take longer to move through this progression and potentially create additional habits along the way.

How Much Sleep Should My Newborn Get

Babies will show signs when they are getting tired such as grimacing, yawning, grizzling, frowning, sucking, staring, snuggling in, jerky movements, becoming over active, clenching fists, rubbing eyes, fussiness or crying. Responding early to these tired signs prevents your baby becoming distressed and makes it easier for them to sleep.

Wake Windows For A Six Month Old

At six months old, Mitchell notes that your approach to wake windows for your baby should shift a little bit.

At this stage, you should still be following awake windows vs. a by-the-clock schedule and your baby may be ready to extend awake windows slightly to 2 to 3 hours, she explains.

Following your babys own awake windows means that you will also time their naps during the day accordingly. Just like last month, youll want to decrease the length of your babys nap times during the day. For instance, you should aim to time your babys first two naps to be between 1.5 to 2 hours and their last nap between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

The last nap of the day at this point should really just be a bridge to bedtime, which is ideally between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., Mitchell adds.

How Much Sleep Does A 13

Infants up to three months old should be getting 14-17 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period, according to the National Sleep Foundation. By three months of age, many babies will have settled into a predictable sleep routine. Your baby likely takes two to three naps during the daytime, with longer stretches of nighttime sleep compared to those early newborn weeks.

Remember, all babies are different and they all develop at their own pacethat includes sleeping, too!

This is the stage I recommend parents start to really think about moving their babys bedtime up if they were on a later bedtime. You can do this by gradually adjusting their bedtime 20-25 minutes each night and adjusting the last nap of the day if needed to close that gap, says Rachel Mitchell, founder of My Sweet Sleeper.
