Tips For Breastfeeding A Sleeping Baby

Meredith Shur, MD, FACOG, is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as a certified medical examiner.

You may have heard that you should never wake a sleeping baby, but that’s not always the case. While some newborns will wake up ready to eat without any help, others may be sleepy and need some encouragement. You may find that there are times when you have to wake your baby up for feedings.

Your breastfeeding newborn should eat approximately every one to three hours around the clock. By breastfeeding your baby very often, they will be able to get enough breast milk, and you will be able to stimulate your body to make a healthy breast milk supply.

This doesn’t mean that you have to put your child on a breastfeeding schedule breastfed newborns can eat on demand. However, if your newborn is sleeping and it’s been four hours since they last ate, you need to wake them for a feeding.

    • Some teething babies wont eat While its not as common, some babies start off eating baby food and then suddenly stop. Try putting some teething gel on their gums 15-20 minutes before a meal. If you see an improvement, this is likely the culprit. Heres a natural teething gel I like.
    • Going through a phase Babies may get a little bug or slight cold that we arent even aware of or have some negative experience with food that seemed too minor to us as the parent, but makes them leery of eating. If its the latter, some sensory sensitivities can develop if a baby goes for a while without eating any food. If this is the case for your baby, youll want to follow the steps below and focus on not pressuring your baby to eat. Its really important that mealtimes are a positive experience.
    • Theyve outgrown baby food If your baby is later in their 7th month or older, they may just be sick of solid baby food and ready for the real deal table and finger foods. I know that seems scary and makes some parents nervous. Dont worry though, if you think this is why your baby suddenly wont eat solids anymore, then head to how to transition to table foods.

Why Is Responsive Feeding So Important

A newborn baby’s stomach is only the size of a walnut, so they need to feed little and often. Your baby can have a good feed and be hungry again quite quickly. This is why “responsive feeding” also called “baby-led” or “on-demand” feeding is so important.

The idea is that you respond to your baby’s cues. Breastfeeding is not only about your baby getting enough milk. Your baby feeds for comfort and reassurance, too.

Babies go through different patterns of feeding as they grow. Letting them feed when they need to will ensure they’re content and getting the milk they need, when they need it, and will also stimulate your milk supply.

Responsive feeding is also to do with your needs. You may want to offer a breastfeed if your breasts are uncomfortably full, or if you need to fit in a feed around other commitments, or if you just want to sit down and enjoy spending some time with your baby.

    Keep The Pressure Low

The more a child is pushed to do something, the less likely they will want to do it – its just human nature. This is where you have full permission to stop nagging, bribing, coercing or negotiating with your child when it comes to eating.

Remember: Parents provide, child decides. Its your job to determine what food is served. Its your childs job to decide whether or not they want to eat what you have served and how much. If eating vegetables is a non-issue, your child will feel more relaxed to try different foods that are served. Pressuring a child to eat vegetables can actually cause them to dislike those foods.

How Can You Increase Your Babys Weight

10 TIPS FOR HOW I GOT MY BABY TO EAT FINGER FOOD | MOM TIPS

Some babies have a hard time eating and just cant seem to keep up when it comes to weight gain. Reach out to your pediatrician if you feel that your baby has difficulty swallowing, vomits between feeds, seems to have a food allergy, has reflux, or has ongoing diarrhea.

These issues could prevent your baby from absorbing the calories that they need. Once youve canceled out these possibilities, if you and your babys pediatrician decide it is necessary, you can find the right strategy to work towards that coveted weight gain.

Remember, if your pediatrician feels comfortable with your babys current weight gain and can show you their appropriate growth curve, trust in the fact you and your baby are doing fine and no changes are needed.

Trying to increase a babys weight gain when its not needed can increase the risk of unhealthy feeding and eating behaviors and unhealthy weight gain later on.

How To Stimulate The Sleepy Newborn To Eat

So, your baby is born. Congratulations! You might have questions about her eating patterns, or perhaps she she a heavy sleepier, and it is difficult to wake her up to initiate feedings. During the first few days of life, some newborns are too sleepy to take initiative and show their moms that they are ready to eat, and it is considered normal. You may want to use several different strategies to wake your infant and stimulate her to feed.

Consider these strategies to stimulate your baby to eat:

    – Unbundle the baby and hold her in a sitting position. Sometimes getting her undressed down to the diaper does the trick! When your infant is exposed to cooler air she may wake up and be ready for a meal.

    – Talk to your baby and stroke her back.

    – Use skin-to-skin contact to stimulate the baby to eat.

    – Try expressing some breast milk or drops of formula into your baby’s mouth to stimulate sucking.

    – If the infant is still sleepy after 10 minutes of stimulating, placed her down and try again in 30 minutes.

    – Do not let your baby go without eating for longer than four hours. She may get then very hungry and it will be difficult to satisfy her hunger quickly enough to have a pleasant feeding experience.

    – Avoid pacifiers as the baby may satisfy her need for sucking and fall asleep without feeding.

When these suggestions do not work, your baby does not want to eat, or you are concerned consult with your pediatric health care provider ASAP.

    • Use your own expressed milk first for any alternative feedings.

    • Use an alternative feeding method if it is recommended by your healthcare provider or a certified lactation consultant . There are many alternative feeding options, so let them know if a recommendation does not “feel right” for you. Alternative feeding methods include:

    • Cup feeding

    • A tube system with a special feeding tube taped to the breast or a finger

    • Syringe feeding

    • Spoon-feeding

    • Bottle-feeding

  • Several methods require assistance from a professional, such as a certified lactation consultant so you can use them correctly. Depending on your baby and the cause of the problem, some methods may work better than others. Also, discuss bottle nipple type with the IBCLC if you bottle-feed any supplement. Some types of bottle nipples are less likely to interfere with breastfeeding than others.

What If The Birth Doesnt Go To Plan

If you have a c-section or there are other complications, you may still be able to have skin-to-skin time with your baby and breastfeed in the first few hours.

If you arent able to hold your baby, the next best thing is for him to have skin-to-skin contact with your partner instead. This will help keep your baby feeling safe, loved and warm until youre ready, says Cathy.

If your baby is unable to breastfeed, then its a good idea to start expressing your milk early and frequently until he is able. While breastfeeding directly as soon as possible gives mum and baby a good start, its not essential, reassures Cathy. Whats more important is to initiate your milk supply so you can work towards breastfeeding later if needed.

You can hand express and use the hospital breast pump to help initiate your milk supply in the beginning.5 The precious colostrum you collect can then be given to your baby. This is especially important if he is premature or poorly, because your breast milk has so many wonderful health benefits.

Dont feel like breastfeeding is unachievable if your baby arrives early or has medical complications that stop him feeding at the start, either. Ive worked with many, many mums where their baby hasnt breastfed directly from the breast at all in the first six weeks due to a premature arrival or other difficulties, and theyve gone on to breastfeed successfully, says Cathy.
