Your baby will need about 9 to 18 hours of sleep until they are 3 months old. The average they will sleep is about 14.5 hours.
Your baby is unique and may sleep differently to other babies. Some babies sleep for long periods, others for short bursts. They will sleep during the day and night. They might sleep for anything between a few minutes to a few hours at a time.
Newborn babies dont know the difference between day and night. Their sleep is more likely controlled by their tummies.
Helping Your Baby To Sleep

Your baby will have their own pattern of waking and sleeping, and it’s unlikely to be the same as other babies you know.
It’s also unlikely to fit in with your need for sleep. Try to sleep when your baby sleeps.
If you’re breastfeeding, in the early weeks your baby is likely to doze off for short periods during a feed. Carry on feeding until you think your baby has finished or until they’re fully asleep. This is a good opportunity to try to get a bit of rest yourself.
If you’re not sleeping at the same time as your baby, don’t worry about keeping the house silent while they sleep. It’s good to get your baby used to sleeping through a certain amount of noise.
How Long Do Newborns Sleep
How much should a newborn sleep? Babies may be too short to compete in the Olympics, but they definitely hold the worlds record for championship sleeping.
With an average of 16 hours a day , newborn infants rack up more snoozing than at any other time in life.
Yet this can be a fooler! Youd think that 16 hours of baby sleep would leave you tons of free time every day. But newborn sleep is shredded into confetti-like bits sprinkled throughout the light and night. Its like winning the lotterybut getting paid in pennies.
And if your child only needs 12 or 13 hours of sleep per day, its even crazier. Between feeding, bathing, diaper changes and calming cryingGod help you!it can feel like you never get a break.
And many parents are surprised by their newborns sleep pattern. During the first day of life, most babies are alert for about an hour, and then they can fall into deep sleep for 12 to 18 hours.
During the initial period of bringing your newborn home, you should cuddle your baby and offer feedingsbut even if she suckles, the breasts contain very little milk on the first day. Dont worry, however! Your early milk is rich in protein, antibodies and nutrients to get your baby off to a great start. Additionally, like a little camel, your baby is born with an extra pound of food and water in her body.

Wake Windows For An 11 Month Old
According to Mitchell, your baby’s sleep needs are similar to 10 months with awake windows ranging from 2.5 to 4 hours. And as you might notice, there’s a pretty big difference between 2.5 hours and 4 hours, which means it’s important for you to try to learn your baby’s sleep cues so you can time their wake windows appropriately.
“It is continually important to pay attention to your baby’s sleepy cues and make sure that you’re following awake windows that work well for your baby,” she suggests.

Reasons Newborn Babies Cry
- They are hungry and need to feed
- They are tired and need to nap. Essentially newborns nap between each feeding. If baby has been up more than 1.5 hours then they are tired, and likely overtired.
- They are physicallyuncomfortable. Baby may have a wet diaper, dirty diaper or be too hot or cold. Generally, newborns need about one more layer than we do!
- They have reflux and its uncomfortable. You will see your pediatrician, of course, for this, then use the information here to keep baby as comfortable as possible until they outgrow this.
- They have colic and/or are letting off steam. Newborns dont usually develop colic until around 6 weeks or so, but some crying is normal with newborns. Its the only way they can communicate. Our job is not to stop their crying as quickly as humanly possible, but to learn to decipher their cries so we can meet their needs appropriately and promptly.

What Sleeping Positions Are Best For A Newborn
Research has found a link between sudden infant death syndrome and babies who sleep on their stomach .
Experts now agree that putting a baby to sleep or down for a nap on his or her back is the safest position. Side-sleeping has a higher risk for SIDS than back sleeping. Other reports have found soft surfaces, loose bedding, and overheating with too many blankets also increase the risk for SIDS. When infants are put to sleep on their stomach and they also sleep on soft bedding, the risk for SIDS is even higher. Smoking by the mother is also a risk for SIDS, as are poor prenatal care and prematurity. Since the American Academy of Pediatrics made the “back-to-sleep” recommendation in 1992, the SIDS rate has dropped more than 50%.
Back sleeping also appears to be safer for other reasons. There is no evidence that babies are more likely to vomit or spit up while sleeping on their back. In fact, choking may be more likely in the prone position.
A task force of The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the AAP, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development offer the following recommendations for infant bedding:

To prevent overheating, the report recommends that the infant should be lightly clothed for sleep and the room temperature kept comfortable for a lightly clothed adult. Avoid overbundling, and check the baby’s skin to make sure it is not hot to the touch.
Can Infants Sleep Too Much
Yes, its possible for babies to sleep too much and its definitely not recommended early in infancy. Remember, at 1 month of age your baby should feed at least eight to 12 times in the span of 24 hours, so letting a newborn sleep “all day” or more than the upper limit of 17 hours can mean shell miss out on the nutrition she needs.
Keep in mind that youll need to gently rouse your baby if she sleeps longer than four hours during those early weeks. And if she isnt awake enough to eat at least eight times a day, call your pediatrician for advice.

How Much Sleep Does A 13
Infants up to three months old should be getting 14-17 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period, according to the National Sleep Foundation. By three months of age, many babies will have settled into a predictable sleep routine. Your baby likely takes two to three naps during the daytime, with longer stretches of nighttime sleep compared to those early newborn weeks.
Remember, all babies are different and they all develop at their own pacethat includes sleeping, too!
“This is the stage I recommend parents start to really think about moving their baby’s bedtime up if they were on a later bedtime. You can do this by gradually adjusting their bedtime 20-25 minutes each night and adjusting the last nap of the day if needed to close that gap,” says Rachel Mitchell, founder of My Sweet Sleeper. “You may also be wondering when you can start ‘sleep training’ or teaching those independent skills. Sleep Tips For 9 Month Old Babies
If you dealt with sleep regressions last month, this month should be all about catching up on lost sleep for you and continuing those sleep habits and routines that you set into place.
- Mix it up during the day. Making sure your baby is stimulated adequately during the day with appropriate amounts of activity. And if you find yourself both in a rut, consider mixing up your daytime routines. For instance, you could try taking a walk outside together or taking a baby music class together.
- Assess your sleep environment. Your baby will respond to cues in their sleep environment, so if you’re still struggling with sleep, take a look around. Is the place you’re trying to put your baby to sleep a calming environment? Are there bright lights around? Is it noisy? If there are any changes that you could make to make the sleep environment more calming, take them and see if it makes a difference.
- Don’t force it. Although many babies will be past the eight-month-old sleep regression and moving into a two-a-day nap schedule, some babies won’t be there just yet. So don’t force it! Follow your baby’s cues and let them lead the way for you when it comes to sleep.
- Try sleep training. Once your baby is past the sleep regression of eight months, you can implement more sleep training techniques. Just be sure you don’t try to implement any major changes during a regression, says Mitchell.

What are wake windows and why are they important? A wake window is the period of time a baby can stay awake in between naps without being overtired. Since newborn babies can’t self-regulate their own sleep patterns, they can become overtired instead of simply just falling asleep.
“Because sleep still varies you are not following a by-the-clock schedule, but rather awake windows between 60-90 minutes. You can have a schedule in mind but just understand this will change daily. You may find that it is hard for your one-week-old to stay awake, which is completely normal. Remember that they are still adjusting to life outside of the womb and they are growing rapidly, which makes them quite tired!” says Mitchell.
Week Old Sleep Schedule / 2 Month Old Sleep Schedule Development And Sleep Patterns
Your newborns sleep patterns: By 8 weeks old/2 months old, many babies are sleeping longer at night and we start to see earlier and earlier bedtimes as your baby lengthens nighttime sleep to 11-12 hours and they nap 3-4 hours during the day, on average. They still need ~14-16 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. However, if your baby still has a later bedtime, that isnt too uncommon. Until your baby is sleeping 11-12 hours at night, you really dont want an 8 PM or earlier bedtime else you will have to start your day WAY too early! In addition, your baby may have been eating just 1-2 times a night but once they lengthen their nighttime sleep, this might mean a night feeding creeps back in, temporarily.
Some parents stop swaddling around this age because baby is rolling which can become problematic for sleep. This can lead to more night-waking and shorter naps. In addition, there is commonly an 8-week growth spurt to keep in mind.

Feeding Your Newborn Baby
The good news is that you wonât need to set a rigid feeding schedule for your newborn. Instead, watch for your babyâs hunger signals to get to know whatâs normal for your little one. This month, your baby may show hunger by rooting , lip smacking, or sucking on his fist. Crying can also be a sign of hunger, but itâs better to feed your baby before this stage, rather than waiting until your little one is really upset.
