Newborn puppies typically nurse from their mom about every two hours. As they grow older the time between nursing increases, and by four or five weeks mom starts weaning her puppies. That means youll have to step in to make up the difference and start introducing some puppy chow. They typically transition to solid food only at around eight weeks of age.
Your Baby Falls Asleep Mid
First check that shes actually asleep. She may be sucking so blissfully that she appears to have gone off to La-La Land, but in fact shes simply taking her sweet time sucking down the contents of her bottle.
If she really has nodded off, gently rouse her enough to finish off the meal. Try undressing her a little, tickling her feet, burping her, switching positions or even pausing for a diaper change.

What Kind Of Milk Should I Use
Most infant formula brands are either first milks or follow on milks. There are also formulas that are marketed as comfort milk and hungrier baby milk.
Some mums feel that these types of milk make a difference, but there is no evidence that you need to change from a first milk to any other type.
First milk is the only food your baby will need for the first 6 months. After that, you can introduce them to solid food alongside first milk.
You can start giving your baby ordinary full-fat cows milk instead of first milk when they turn 1.

- a measured amount of formula powder in a small, clean and dry container
- a vacuum flask of hot water that’s just been boiled
- an empty sterilised feeding bottle with cap and retaining ring in place
The vacuum flask does not need to be sterilised, but should be clean, and only used for your baby. The boiling water should kill any bacteria present in the flask. If the flask is full and sealed, the water will stay above 70C for several hours.
Make up a fresh feed only when your baby needs it. The water must still be hot when you use it, to destroy any bacteria in the formula powder.
Remember to cool the bottle under cold running water before you feed it to your baby.
Alternatively, you could use a carton of ready-to-feed liquid formula when you’re away from home.

When Baby Doesnt Finish The Bottle
Babies know when theyve had enough, so let them judge how much they need, and dont worry if they dont finish the bottle.
If your baby drifts off to sleep during a feed, try putting them over your shoulder, rubbing their back, or gently tickling their head, legs and tummy to wake them up. If that doesnt work, a nappy change might. Wait till theyre fully awake before offering them the rest of the bottle.
Throw away any leftover formula or breastmilk after an hour. Its risky to store half-empty bottles as theyre quickly contaminated after being sucked on, and after sitting at room temperature.
How To Heat The Milk:
Formula can be made with warm water to avoid the need for heating. If the formula has been refrigerated or you are serving pumped or stored breast milk you can heat it by placing the bottle in a pan of warm water on the stove or simply by running hot water over it. Never use boiling water or actually heat formula or breast milk in a pan on the stove. Bottles also should not be microwaved as this may cause heat spots which can burn your baby. In cases other than cows milk, it also leads to a reduction in nutrients. Today there are also specialized bottle warmers you can buy to keep bottles toasty and ready if you prefer.

It’s important to choose a formula that is iron-fortified. Low-iron formulas are available due to the belief that iron makes babies gassy and constipated, but studies have found this to be untrue. How Do I Formula Feed My Baby
The most common way to feed a baby with formula milk is with a bottle. There are lots of different bottle brands and styles to choose from. Teats can either be made from rubber or silicone and vary in shape. Theres no evidence that one is better than the other, so it just depends on what you like and if your baby has a preference. You may find that you try several different brands before you find one that works well for you and your baby.
How Much To Bottle Feed Puppies
The first step is to weigh the puppy, as a puppy should get 30ml of formula for each 8oz of body weight. That total amount has to be divided into eight feedings for the first week.
Also, the first thing to do is write down the weight of the puppy, then feed, then reweigh. All this information should be recorded each time a puppy is fed. A puppy that continues to suckle should be given a half ounce more. The goal is for the puppy to make it a couple of hours without getting too hungry.
The goal is neither to overfeed or underfeed the puppies. Underfeeding them will cause them to whine and not grow at the proper rate. Overfeeding may cause diarrhea, and result in dehydration. In general, start with a minimum amount of formula based on weight, and after getting to that amount if the puppy is still vigorously sucking, you may continue by increments of 1 ml with a few seconds of rest in between. Burp the puppies and if a puppy still wants to eat, continue to feed an additional 1 ml. Do not exceed more than 50% of the allotted amount of formula. Give the puppy at least a two-hour break before feeding again.

Washing And Sterilizing Bottles
You may want to sterilize your bottles before their first use. You can do this with a steam sterilizer or in the dishwasher.
Sanitizing them between uses is probably unnecessary, but you do want to ensure that you always have a clean supply on hand lest you have to wash one in the middle of the night while a crying baby impatiently awaits their bottle.
That said, a bottle requires a thorough scrubbing between uses, especially if it has pieces and parts with nooks and crannies. You can, of course, also use your trusty dishwasher. Either way, its smart to at least pour out any unused formula or breastmilk right away and give the bottle a quick rinse after a feeding session.

How Long Is A Bottle Good For
It may seem painful to throw away precious pumped liquid gold or chuck expensive formula. Yet, at some point or another, youll probably watch wistfully as you pour some unused bottle milk down the drain.
If youre using expressed breast milk, there are some important time frames to remember. Breast milk can be frozen for up to 6 to 12 months and refrigerated for 4 days. Once you begin feeding a breast milk bottle, its safe for up to 2 hours.
A prepared bottle of formula can be refrigerated for 24 hours. Once baby has taken a sip from a bottle of formula, it must be used within 1 hour. Bacteria multiply quickly on milk-based products, so be sure to check the clock.
Signs Your Baby Is Hungry
Learning your baby’s hunger cues helps you determine when they are ready to eat . Plus, recognizing hunger cues can help you get your baby fed before they start crying. Here are some signs that your baby might be ready to eat:
- Showing signs of the rooting reflex
- Licking their lips
- Sucking on their hands or anything within reach like your arm or shirt
- Nuzzling against your breasts

- Being fussy or crying

When To Stop Bottle
Puppies can be weaned beginning in the fourth week.Weaning should be a gradual process. A cookie sheet of dry food can be put out. It can first be softened with formula and then with water. A good high quality puppy food, and one manufactured specifically to meet the demands of growing puppies is a good choice for transitioning puppies to solid food.
By the fourth week, the puppies should be fed only four times per day. The puppies will receive their first dewormings and vaccinations. Sometimes deworming medicine can cause diarrhea in puppies. If the deworming medicine causes a couple of days of diarrhea, it may be a good idea to slow the weaning process down until it is resolved. Too much of a different food can exacerbate diarrhea. It is best to not dehydrate the puppies when they are affected by a prolonged diarrhea. Of course, sometimes deworming medicine does not cause diarrhea.
Past litters should give good information about how well the puppies will do on a particular medicine. Generally, the larger infestations cause more of a die-off of the parasites and are more likely to cause diarrhea. Vaccinations, also, can cause some reactions in susceptible puppies. Again, if the puppies react negatively to vaccinations it may be wise to back off on new foods until they are over with fevers.
