How To Set A Bedtime Routine For A Newborn

We Followed This Newborn Schedule From Weeks 1

Building a Good Bedtime Routine for Your Baby

For the first two weeks, we continued to feed every three hours through the night. After the third week, we let them wake us up when they were hungry .

Also during the first two weeks, we struggled to keep them awake for their feedings. While theyd be awake for the first half of the feeding hour, theyd fall asleep and then wed spend the rest of the feeding hour trying to wake them up, and then changing their diaper. Then, they napped for about 2 hours.

On the third week, theyd last almost the whole hour without showing any sleepy cues.

Put Your Child To Sleep In The Same Place

Most babies fall asleep in their strollers or car seats sometimes. Just aim to consistently put your baby to sleep in his crib at around the same time, even for naps, starting when he’s a couple months old. Its important not only to help your baby sleep more soundly, but also to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome .

To that end, avoid scheduling errands when it’s baby’s naptime. If your cutie does fall asleep in the stroller, car seat or swing, be sure to transfer him to the crib as soon as possible.

Make Sleep A Family Priority

You can achieve this by determining how much sleep is required by each member of your family, especially your babys sleep. Once determined, make sure that they all get to have enough sleep. If there are any problems, make sure that they are discussed with your toddlers doctor. Many such problems are easily treated.

Here Are Some Ideas To Get You Started

Step 1: Set up a quiet-time space in your toddlers room. You can use a special clear storage bin that has quiet toysthey can play with before bed .

Explain to them that you are going to put the baby to sleep and they are going to play quietly in their room. You can say something along the lines of: When mommy is done putting baby sister to sleep, we will have a special storytime together in your room, and then I will tuck you in for goodnight songs.

This routine takes practice and repetition before it sticks

Step 2: After your toddler is set up with their quiet timeget baby down for bed. Easier said than done. My toddler would often come out of her room looking for me, open the door to the babys room, or have a general end-of-day tantrum because I couldnt be in two places at once.

  • As time went on, this whole routine became easier for my toddler. However, when she was on the younger side, closer to 2 years old, this whole concept was very difficult for her to embrace.
  • I tried many different versions of this and Ive had the most success with the version Ive shared with you above. The primary reason being that toddlers NEED that special attention from you at the end of the day, which is almost impossible when you also have a baby to attend to.
  • I found that if I could keep my toddler entertained long enough, I could get the baby to sleep and then have that one-on-one time with her.

Step 4: Netflix. Wine. Ice Cream. Repeat as needed.

When Should You Start A Bedtime Routine For Baby

Newborn Bedtime Routine

Don’t pressure yourself to impose a bedtime routine as soon as you get home from the hospital with your newborn. After all, he has to recover from the effort of being born and so do you! Plus, newborns dont have enough of a sense of day and night to have any predictable patterns.

But when your baby is around 6 to 8 weeks of age, you can try starting a bedtime routine. It should be very short at first maybe just a cuddly feeding and a brief reading of a book.

Next, the parents should indulge in calming down the child and bring them to sleep mode. These tips are very useful to avoid child crying or screaming while sleeping.

  • Brushing teeth
  • Story telling to the child in the bed

When Baby Is 1 To 2 Months Old

Speak to any seasoned parents, and youre likely to hear that establishing regularity early on in your infants life is the key to maintaining sanity. Setting a sleep schedule early on in life can also encourage healthy sleep habits for years to come.

When infants are first born, their circadian rhythm wont develop for a few months however, around two months old, their internal clock will have started to sync. Then, at about three to six months, you will probably be able to predict when theyll wake up, take naps, and be sleepy for bedtime.

Its wise to put them down for bed while theyre drowsy but not yet asleep so they can begin developing the skill of self-soothing. This will help them become comfortable going to sleep without assistance, letting you get some precious zzzs.

When implementing a routine, try to remain flexible whats comfortable to you and what feels natural to your munchkin may be different. All tots varysome slip nicely into a strict schedule, while some prefer a looser timetable. Its easier to stick to a plan when you can find a schedule with which your baby can agree.

Time To Put Newborns To Bed

Simple newborn baby sleeping and feeding schedule

As your newborns day/night confusion goes away, they will start to stay awake for longer periods of time during the day. They will take naps and it might start to feel like daytime is now distinct from the nighttime. This is the time we start to think about setting a specific bedtime.

When you decide on the time to put your newborn to bed, you must keep in mind that newborns often only sleep 8-10 hours at night . During this time of day, they will sleep consecutively waking only for feedings and then go right back to sleep. During the day, they will stay awake for 45-90 minutes at a time, on average.

The last thing you want is for your baby to stay awake from 2:00 to 3:00 a.m., take a 1-hour nap, and then stay awake again from 4:00 to 5:00 a.m.

Therefore, you want to set your newborns bedtime to be late around 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. That way, if they sleep 9 hours, it will be from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., for example. Be sure to put your newborn on a schedule based on their age in weeks.

What Is A Bedtime Routine

A bedtime routine is a sequence of activities you do every night to help your baby relax and fall asleep easily.

Babies and young toddlers have limited comprehension. They cant understand us saying Its time to go to sleep now. So we have to use behavioral cues that are proven to relax babies, so they accept falling asleep.

Its a way to relax your baby without them realising it, so they fuss less and are able to sleep easily every night. It takes about 15-30 minutes and typically becomes parents favorite part of the day!

When you create a bedtime routine for your little one and you do it at the same time every night, youre sending signals to their brain and body that its time to sleep. And over time youll see your baby relax on cue. Hell yawn when you put on his sleep sack. Shell rub her eyes while you read her favorite bedtime book. And youll feel so proud of the peaceful, relaxing time youve created for them.

Can You Put A Newborn On A Sleep Schedule

Since your newborn spent the last nine months in the cozy confines of your dark womb, she wont understand when its daytime or nighttime for the first few weeks of life. That means you cant expect to put your infant on a newborn sleep schedule just yet.

Expect your newborn to sleep between 14 and 17 hours over a 24-hour period. Your baby will sleep for two to three hours at a time, then gradually three to four hours at a stretch. Be sure to check with your pediatrician about when it’s okay to let your baby consistently sleep for four or more hours at a time.

Keep in mind that if your newborn doesnt wake on her own during the night, youll need to wake your baby to eat every two to three hours.

How Long A Bedtime Routine Should Be

Your childs bedtime routine is one of the most important times of the day. The idea behind solid sleep routines is to cue your childs physical body and mind that its time for sleep.

For naps, this routine should really only last 5-10 minutes before you lay your baby or toddler down. At bedtime, however, I have found that the sweet spot is around 20-30 minutes.

A routine thats much less than 20 minutes may not be enough time for your baby to really register that its bedtime, and we want to make sure were cuing their body that overnight sleep is to come.

With toddlers and older kids, we want to also mentally prepare them so that transitioning to sleep isnt such a challenge!

Similarly, anything longer than 30 minutes is often too much for your little one to remember they will likely forget that bedtime is even happening!

If you have a newborn and you are still establishing feeding and each feed is still taking 20+ minutes, note that their bedtime routine will likely be longer than 30 minutes. And thats okay if its the feed piece that makes it longer!

Setting A Bedtime Routine

A bedtime routine includes all of the things that you do with your baby or child just before you put them to bed, such as taking a bath, the last diaper change, putting on pajamas, and reading a bedtime story.

The goal of a good bedtime routine is for your child to fall asleep on their own, without being rocked, watching TV, or having you lying down next to them. This way, if they do wake up later, they should be able to fall back asleep without needing any extra help.

If your child associates falling asleep with being rocked, for example, if they wake up in the middle of the night, they likely won’t be able to go back to sleep unless you rock them.
