How To Know If Newborn Is Gassy

How To Identify Baby Gas

How to tell regular infant gas from a more serious condition

Infant gas is most commonly experienced after eating, though it can strike at any time, especially if your baby has been crying or using a pacifier recently. Signs that your baby is experiencing troublesome gas include:

If your baby has any of these signs and you suspect theyre suffering from gas, there are a variety of steps you can take to relieve the gas, such as changing your feeding position, massaging your infant, altering the food or drink your baby is getting , using over-the-counter medications, or positioning your baby on his or her tummy to help pass the gas. If you are considering changing your babys diet, be sure to talk to your pediatrician first to make sure he or she continues to get adequate amounts of the nutrients needed for growth.

If the gas is accompanied by a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees in a baby less than 12 weeks of age, extended and inconsolable crying that lasts longer than two hours, refusal to eat, or signs of pain, you should seek out immediate medical attention.

The good news is that newborns and young infants outgrow their gassy months relatively quickly. As their digestive tracts grow and their systems get better at breaking down milk or formula, the number of bouts of infant gas should decline.

Is Your Babys Formula Giving Them Gas

Before rushing to a pharmacy or calling your doctor in a panic, here are some preventive measures you can take to prevent your baby from getting gassy:

  • Check the formula. Are you making it as directed? Is the formula past its expiration date? Are you mixing two different formulas? Sometimes, your baby may develop gas if you mix two types of baby formulas, but their tummy discomfort will usually settle on its own in a few days.
  • Did your baby start getting gassy since you switched to a new brand of formula? Your baby may be allergic to the new brand or maybe their gut is getting used to the new formula. Try discontinuing the new formula and see if it helps.
  • Feed your baby before they start crying. Often babies cry when they are hungry, and swallow air when crying. If you feed them before they get hungry enough to start crying, they may swallow less air and not get gassy.
  • Avoid giving them a pacifier.

Some Causes Of Gas In Babies

  • Many young babies have a certain amount of gas and seem to strain as it is passed or as a bowel movement occurs simply because of the immaturity of their digestive system. This doesnt always indicate a problem. Most babies bodies manage gas more easily with growth, maturity, and greater activity. As long as your baby is not overly bothered by the gas or has no other symptoms of food sensitivity or other problems, then tincture of time is likely the best solution.
  • Too much milk too fast, so that baby gulps and chokes and takes in too much air along with the milk. See forceful let-down.
  • Anything that causes baby to take in too much air may result in a gassy baby :
  • Crying Babies swallow air when they are crying, so crying is more likely to be the cause of gas, rather than the result of gas. Respond to babys feeding cues promptly.
  • Bottlefeeding Babies usually swallow more air when drinking from a bottle. When using bottles, use the slowest-flow nipples so baby doesnt get overwhelmed with the milk flow. To reduce air swallowing, keep baby at about a 45 degree angle , make sure baby has a good seal on the base of the nipple, and keep the bottle tilted so the neck & nipple are filled with milk. There are also varieties of bottles that aim to reduce air swallowing. Dont let baby suck on an empty bottle. Burp baby more often if he seems to be swallowing too much air.
  • Overabundant milk supply. See Too Much Milk?
  • Thrush can cause gassiness in babies.

    Baby Massage for Gas

Early on, breastfed babies usually have on average at least one poopy diaper for every day of life. In other words, on day one of her life, she’ll poop once, and on day two she’ll poop twice.

Fortunately, this pattern doesn’t usually continue past five days old or so. After day five, the average breastfed newborn will have about five dirty diapers a day, though anywhere around several per day is usually normal.

Or not. Some babies will continue to poop several times a day or more throughout the first year. Others will go several days between dirty diapers.

It’s not necessary to continue keeping count after six weeks as long as your baby is happy and gaining weight. The number may vary from day to day, and that’s perfectly normal too.

Formula-fed babies typically poop three to four times a day, but some go as long as three or four days without a bowel movement. As long as your baby’s poops are soft and passed without a struggle, you don’t have to be concerned. But call your pediatrician if your little one doesn’t poop for more than five days.

    Adjust Your Bottle Technique

Bottle-fed babies can ingest a lot of bubbles. To combat this, tilt the bottle at an angle that fills the entire nipple with milk. “Otherwise your baby will suck in air,” Dr. Shu says. “More swallowed air means potentially more gas.”

If you use powdered formula, let the bottle settle first before giving it to your baby. Shaking and mixing often causes the bottle to be piled high with bubbles on top of the actual formula. You may also consider using a ready-made formula for gassy babies, as well as specially vented bottles that may reduce the number of bubbles.

Monitor Your Diet Or Change Formula

Gas Problems in Babies – Causes, Signs & Remedies

If youre strictly breastfeeding your baby, your diet can make a difference in how your baby digests milk. If you notice they are uncomfortable after being breastfed, they could be sensitive to the foods youre eating.

Monitor your diet to see if certain foods tend to cause your baby more discomfort and then avoid them, Boone said. Common foods that can cause gas include beans, broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts.

Your baby may do well on a standard formula, but some may have a milk allergy or lactose intolerance. Some babies do best with a low lactose formula like Similac Sensitive or Enfamil Gentlease and other do best with a formula containing probiotics such as Gerber Good Start Soothe or Gentle, Boone said.

    Baby’s First Poop: Meconium

Did you notice greenish-black poop when you changed your newborn’s diaper for the first time? That’s meconium, a sticky, tar-like substance that gradually filled your baby’s intestines during her stay in your uterus.

Though it may look unsettling, it’s completely normal. In fact, that the meconium is in her diaper instead of in her intestines is a good sign now you know that her bowels are doing their job.

How To Deal With A Gassy Baby

Is Baby Only Gassy At Night?

Once you have an awareness of what could be causing gassiness in your baby, the next sensible question is how to manage it for them.

While being more gassy than usual is uncomfortable for anyone, its especially irritating for babies. Naturally, parents want to make them feel better.

One of the biggest contributors to gassy babies is feeding. Fortunately, there are some things you can do with feeding to help reduce your babys gassiness.

First, consider the preparation of your babys formula. If its a powdered formula, be sure to allow it to settle after mixing before feeding it to your baby. Blending or voraciously mixing the formula into liquid can create air bubbles, which can promote gas when your baby consumes them.

You can also gently tap the bottle, right-side up, on a table to help eliminate bubbles. Additionally, use slightly warm water to mix powdered formula, as cold water isnt as effective at dissolving it.

Once your baby is done eating, dont forget to burp them. To do this, hold them with their head on one of your shoulders, careful not to block their airway, and gently pat their back with one hand.

This helps break up any air bubbles that have been trapped in their abdomen and allows them to be released. Youll hear an audible burp, and possibly multiple burps. You can also burp your baby by sitting them up on your lap, supporting their chest, and gently patting their back.
